Title: We are getting a new car at the end of the month. Suggestions?
Post by: soleil on October 15, 2010, 05:35:34 PM
I am a Honda fan. I would love to keep buying Hondas forever. I like the CRV, but my husband doesn't care for it. The Pilot is too big for me. I also like the Nissan Murano a lot. We did have a Nissan Maxima once, and I liked it. I also like the look of the Mazda CX-7, but I've never owned a Mazda and don't know much about them.

Anyone have experiences with any of these? I want a mid-size SUV. I am open to trying other cars, even though I know Hondas rock.

Probably gonna stay away from the Toyotas even though my mom just got a Camry (hopefully she can brake when she needs to  :o). I am just a little iffy since they had their issues. My husband's work vehicle is a Toyota. I did drive the Rav-4, but I hated it. The 4Runners are pretty though.

I have a Toyota truck, so does hubby. This whole town has them. No complaints. We live in the woods and with the snow we need the 4x4 .

Is the vehicle for status or utility , That somewhat determines the price range. as does the ability to pay. You going for economy or comfort and safety.

New or new used? Neighbor bought a Pilot used. She says she has paid more for upkeep than anything. She used to have a Subaru. The next door neighbor bought a Forester. 2nd one. She loves it drives the heck out of it.

I am not sure. I prefer a little used because it makes more sense to me money wise.

My aunt has a Pilot and she loves it. She hasn't had to put any money into it besides oil changes. But still, it is bigger than I want. Sometimes I travel a good bit with my job, so gas mileage is a biggie for me too. The Pilot sucks in that aspect.

Gummint Motors?  :rotf:

I drove a 2011 Ford Fusion this past week (it was a brand-new rental). Not bad when it's got less than 1,000 miles on it, but how will it behave when it's got 80K on the clock?

I don't trust 'em.

And don't even talk to me about Chrysler products.

I love Hondas. I've had several, my mom has had several, my brother had one, my aunts and cousins have all had them as well. I currently have an Infiniti FX (2nd one) and have had a Murano too. I loved it. My vote is a Murano.

I have also had two Ford Expeditions. They are huge but I liked driving them.

Nothing at all. I have owned a Honda, and really once you've owned one, that is all you want.

If I were to get an American car, it wouldn't be a Dodge though. My mom had one, and my uncle has one. Neither have had decent experiences. I am only stating the cars that I like the looks of (Mazda and Nissan). I really do want another Honda though.

The look of the Murano is my fave. I love it. And we've had a Nissan and it lasted almost 15 years. My husband likes Nissans, and he likes the fact that they use Bose. I don't care about the radio. As long as I can hear it, I am good.

Mrs E drives a 2000 Honda Accord. It's got almost 170K on the clock and it's still running strong. (Note to self- she needs another oil change, and it's not too soon to start thinking about the timing chain/water pump/serpentine belt project. Oh, and the platinum spark plugs, too.)

My husband has an Infinti G37 (coupe), he had Ford F-150's up until he bought the Infiniti. He is going back to Ford, he is getting a Ford Raptor. My step dad works for a Ford dealership and can get special pricing. He is going to get it in the next few months. We checked them out the other weekend, it is so nice on the inside. We want to start camping and my husband wants to get 4 wheelers so he is getting a truck again. He never seemed to fit the G37, he has always been a truck kind of guy.

My parents bought me a 1997 Accord when I turned 21. It had 25,000 miles on it. I still have that car. 240,000 miles later, and it is still kicking strong. I have another car, but we are going to trade in the Honda. Probably won't get much at all for it, but I've never once had an issue with it that wasn't maintenance related. I am hoping to get at least a grand for it. It is in great shape (minus the age and mileage). Last year, a guy offered to buy it from me. Just seeing it at the store, he asked if I'd sell it. They are good cars.

I really like the Buick Enclave. I think it is pretty. I don't know much about Buicks though. I don't know what they cost either. I think they may be more than we want to pay though. If they are closer to 40 grand, that is too much. Just browsing, it looks like they are pricy.

What's your budget?

Stay away from GM, Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep... just stay away from any company that took taxpayer dollars.  It's like paying for a car that you already "own" in a sense.  If you know what I mean.

If I were to buy an SUV today, I'd purchase an Acura MDX or an Infiniti FX45.... if my budget allowed it.  lol

Nissan's are really good.  I owned two of them.  :)

Our price range is under 30 grand. Or at least that is where I'd like to keep it. 35-40 grand is higher than I am willing to go.

'93 F150 short bed super-cab... 250k on the clock...   a/c broke, driver side power window broke... still driven daily, still love it like a first-born child...

2002 Excursion...  diesel...   22 mpg... HUGE!!!... most comfy vehicle I ever owned...

The 2 times I strayed from Fords were nightmares (a Chevy Astro and a Dodge 3/4-ton)...

LOOOOOVEEEEEE  THE RAPTOR!!!

If you're looking for SUV's, I would definitely check out Ford.  Many of their vehicles are based on Mazda and Volvo platforms, so they are pretty reliable.  My parents have been driving Acura and Volvo SUV's for a few years and I haven't heard of any major complaints from them.  You can do comparison shopping at Edmunds (http://www.edmunds.com/).  MSN Autos (http://autos.msn.com/) is another site I like to use to compare vehicles.

Personally, I like the Ford Flex and would test drive one a heartbeat if I needed seating for seven.  You can probably get a bargain on a year-old 2010 model, especially this time of year when dealers are trying to move old inventory off their lot to make way for new ones.

Those are things you have to maintain though. I don't know why I am anti-Ford. I've never owned one, never heard anything bad (except for that Firestone tire issue). I really think it is because my husband was raised a Chevy guy, and it has rubbed off on me. Stupid really.

I felt the same way until I started paying attention to their vehicles, and they're really good.  GM is on par with the Koreans and really don't have much to offer (with the exception of the non-existent Australian Holden Commodore/Pontiac G8 GT) while Ford has been borrowing heavily from their European and Japanese partners and it shows.

Thanks! I will definitely keep that in mind. I am trying my best to be as open minded as I can when it comes to this vehicle we will purchase. I don't want to just stick to something because that is what I know. There could be just as awesome vehicles out there for less. Although, I am pretty sold on the Honda. I've never heard one person complain. I am sure there is someone out there, but Hondas are known for their reliability, and besides the safety issue, that is my main concern. Still, I want to open my mind to other options.

I used to be a GM guy until the early 80s. I LOVED my 72 Cutlass. I bought a Datsun once, a 79 310 GX. I wouldn't mind finding another like it because it got really good gas mileage (37 MPG) if I drove it nicely. I bought my first Ford truck in 98 and still have it, despite the MN winters. I had another Ford because it was 4WD, 4DR and pretty nice, but got rid of it because the payments were KILLING me. And yes, tires, brakes, batteries, etc are normal maintenance.

Go with Ford or Toyota then.  Fords definately get a bad rep and Toyota is going through some rough times but both are dependable vehicles. You get your money's worth and are safe and reliable also. Check out the Ford Explorer limited.

Some day when I have lots of time and there's a ton of bandwidth available, I'll talk rather poorly of the 1993 Ford Taurus lemon that I owned.

If Ford got their shit together, they'd have to come back a helluva long way. That entire experience soured me to the point that I ask myself - born and raised in the Detroit area - WTF do I absolutely NEED with American cars?

I'll just buy either Honda or even Toyota, despite the recent crap on Toyota.

I owned a Saturn - noisy, AC didn't work worth a damn, manual shifter was a pile of junk. Grew to distrust that car when it got about 80K on it - traded it in for the Toyota Sienna we've got now.

I know for a fact that, while ALL car manufacturers deliberately build in a certain life span into their vehicles, none does so with more malice aforethought than American car makers. That was evident with my experience with a Chevrolet Nova, a Plymouth Valiant, and the Taurus I mentioned. Compared to the Jap cars, they're all piles of shit.

Taking a good solid look at Hyundai now - I really like the Sonata. Rented one a few years ago and was very impressed with it.

I just bought my 3rd Hyundai Santa Fe, '10 model.  For $19,000, a lifetime warranty (the Mall of GA dealer extends the usual 10 year warranty) and a bunch of bells and whistles I like, I couldn't have done better.

My husband has been impressed with Hyundai through my experience and just leased a new Sonata.  They did the paperwork to get him out of his lease, Nissan Altima, early and his payments didn't increase much.  His car is sleek!

I much rather have the Lexus SUV, but my budget doesn't allow.  Still, I love my Santa Fe.

My new Santa Fe is a 4 cylinder.  The last 2 were 6.  It still has plenty of pickup on these mountain roads and I've seen much improved mileage over the last couple.  It's cool to get XM for 3 months and BlueTooth on the steering wheel is awesome!

Everybody down on American made. I wear cars/trucks out before I buy another. Having said that I've put well over 200 thousand miles on several American mader cars/trucks from gassers to diesels with little to no problems.

Now, if they still made 'em, I'd recommend a GM product with a 3.8 (3800 cc) engine. Wife has worn out one Buick with that engine (285,000 miles and still didn't use oil) and is working on the second one (over 200 thou, uses no oil). Other people had good service from those engines...I guess that's why they quit making them....and the junkyards don't want them because they can't sell them.....they just don't wear out.... :-)

Only car that I ever bought new and took extra good care of was a '68 VW. Took it the dealer every 3,000 miles for service. It had a 24,000 mile warranty and it blow up at 24,300 coming from work one day..... :bawl:....I rebuilt the engine and sold that sucker.

Until just recently the worst complaint I've heard about the Tundra basn'rt really a complaint. People have said the engine was too much for the chasis.???!!!

It may just be brand loyalty but I have had good experiences with ford trucks/SUV's.

The King Ranch was the one I had that I got rid of. I hated to do it, but the payments were killing me. I wouldn't recommend the bed size for hauling, though. If I were to buy another truck, it would be the F-250 King Ranch w/ 8 ft bed.

That is so true.

My daughter threw up her lunch on our way home from the grocery store.  My first question, "Are you okay?  Poor baby."  The second thing I said, "Did it get on my leather??"

Maybe buying a luxury car wasn't really practical... but it's okay, because I wouldn't be caught dead in ANY mini-van.

We have owned Fords for pretty much my entire marriage (22 years now) and never had a problem with them.   Loved my Suburban I just traded in, but it was starting to have some major problems with it (high mileage) that wasn't worth the cost of repairs to us anymore.

With three boys, babysitters, and all their stuff I went out with three vehicles in mind to purchase (I had crossed off a new Suburban because they start at 50K now and that is just craziness to me), Honda Odyssey, Toyota Sienna and the Volvo (cross country or SUV).    Went to Toyota first, and fell in love with the Sienna Limited AWD.    Totally loaded, drives like a dream, has all the safety features I could want and more.   Decided against the Odyssey as it only comes in 2WD which just won't work in New England.    Was very disappointed in the Volvo -- was not happy with the drive, the vehicle was very small (for my boys, forget it), and the extras just didn't blow my socks off like they did in the Sienna.

Very happy with the Sienna.  So far so good.

I have to admit - I don't understand some of the antipathy toward mini-vans. Yeah, there's the soccer mom image with all the yard apes stuffed in the back raisin' hell, but Mrs E and I are waaaaaaaay too old for yard apes 'n such. Yet this is a vehicle that, for me, is much more practical than a pickup truck.

Even 2WD is just fine where we live (north-central Missouri). The enclosed cargo area will handle 10-foot sections of stuff and the seats come out when you absolutely must have that extra room.

It rides nice (we also have a 2004 Sienna with over 150K on it, with much more to go before it dies), it gets great mileage (about 27 on the highway at 70 mph, and 22 in the city), but with a V6, it has balls enough to get up to speed quickly.

I'm in my mid-fifties, no kids, but I wouldn't trade my mini-van for the most ballsy Ford 250 dually made. I rehearse and perform on 3 low brass instruments on a regular basis, and putting those very expensive musical instruments in a truck, even with a cap, is simply not an option. Thievery still happens on a regular basis and I intend to keep that from happening to me.

That is an amazing truck, I'm sure he'll love it!

Don't even THINK about a Toyota truck or SUV.

+1, Toyota has had some horrendous disasters with their trucks.

Our price range is under 30 grand. Or at least that is where I'd like to keep it. 35-40 grand is higher than I am willing to go.

I've actually been seeing Nissan Murano's advertised as leasing for only $199/month.  A pretty good deal IMHO, and of the auto's you initially listed, it'd be my choice.

Quite honestly though, if you're looking at spending upwards of 30 grand, I'd really take a good look at the new Jeep Cherokee.  That thing is absolutely amazing IMHO.
