SSD & SSI; No COLA in 2010 & 2011
Social Security will not raise benefits in 2010, forecasts say
http://www.mercurynews.com/politics/ci_12281478?nclick_...
WASHINGTON — For the first time in more than three decades, Social Security recipients will not get any increase in their benefits next year, federal forecasts show.
The absence of a cost-of-living adjustment, calculated under a formula set by law, will be a shock to older Americans already hit by plummeting home values, investment losses and rising health costs. More than 50 million people receive Social Security.
"Most seniors have never been through a year in which there was no Social Security COLA," said David M. Certner, legislative counsel at AARP, the lobby for older Americans. Beneficiaries have received automatic cost-of-living adjustments every year since 1975. The increase this year was 5.8 percent.
<<snip>>
The forecasts, by the Obama administration and the Congressional Budget Office, indicate that Social Security beneficiaries will not receive any cost-of-living increase in 2010 or in 2011. The COLA is intended to preserve the purchasing power of Social Security.
A freeze in Social Security benefits would have major implications for Medicare because the COLA, in effect, puts a cap on premiums for Part B of Medicare, which covers doctors' services.
If there is no cost-of-living adjustment for Social Security, about three-fourths of beneficiaries will not see any change in their basic Part B premiums, federal officials said. But some beneficiaries do not have this protection and could face substantial increases in their Part B premiums.
Douglas W. Elmendorf, director of the Congressional Budget Office, predicted that inflation would remain low for several years, so Social Security might not pay a cost-of-living increase until January 2013. President Barack Obama's budget assumes no increase in 2010 or 2011, then a 1.4 percent COLA in 2012.

2. There IS a COLA adjustment for 2010 and 2011...
...it's just zero.
SS COLAs are based on the CPI-W, which currently shows zero growth in cost of living.
But, since each year's SS COLA is based on comparing Q3 numbers from the previous year with Q3 numbers from the year preceding THAT, I don't see how this announcement is anything more than a prediction.

4. this is not going to help Obama get reelected
not one bit.
Billions tossed out to banks, etc.
Nothing for the disabled trying to live in poverty.
Shame on you Mr. President!

5. careful now
It is unwise to mess for too long and too hard with the poorest of this country. While the American poor are not as quick to react as, say Greece, Spain, or France, to name only the most similar countries, there is a limit. One day...

How's that "hopey-changey" shit working for ya NOW, ya freeloadin sumbitches?
I'm packing the car this weekend. The bridge is about to be blown and we're going Galt.

What does this mean? Is this DUmmie crying because those who work for their pay didn't get penalized by having to pay more taxes so the freeloaders could get a raise?? Really?

GOOD!! (the part in red.) :cheersmate:
The reason the banks got the money was a pay back for helping the imposter get elected. Plus,....most of those CEO's are right in line with the imposters policies.

The poor? I don't consider many in these United States to fit that description!
Also, if they are indeed poor, what are they gonna do? Hit us with their checks?

Don't worry dear DUmbass, the federal union employees got a 2.8% COLA and your great communist law makers got a 3.5% COLA.

I went over to the Disability forum for a few minutes. Just strolling through, I came upon this paragraph in a thread about some bipolar chick's upcoming review:
IF YOUR BENEFITS ARE STOPPED: You have 60 days to file an appeal BUT YOU ONLY HAVE 10 DAYS FROM THE DATE OF THE CESSATION NOTICE TO REQUEST YOUR BENEFITS CONTINUE DURING THE APPEAL!!! Also, if you are cut off (b/c they haven't made a decision yet right?) you may want to seek representation. It is unlikely a private attorney will take your case because there there is no automatic fee in a CDR case (collected from back benefits). However, you should check with your State's "legal services corporation" organization and see if they may be able to assist you with your appeal for free.
Does your head ache? If so, I'm sorry. I just can't get over the hoops you have to jump through to get welfare. And it's a pittance. Let's say you've got no arms or legs, I can see where you need some help. But all these people who are just in the doldrums....how do they live within the system described above? Isn't it easier to just work, even if it's some cashier job?
Oh, and "seek representation, but nobody is going to take your case." Sounds like something Warpy would say.

Hey primitives, can't prop up old people AND union shops. Dear Leader chose the unions.

Yes, in many cases it would be easier to just work but you have to think about things like some of the criminals out there. Some of them will work harder to steal something and make a few bucks but to them it is 'FREE' money.
We've had a few runs of copper thieves around here in the last few years. It's shocking how much effort they are willing to put in to steal copper that will 'net' them $100.00.
I guess it all boils down to; They feel like they are getting something for nothing because THEY don't value their time plus there is the high of getting around the system and "No one is going to tell ME what to do and when to do it!"

We deserve a COLA, NO! We demand a COLA, for doing such a good job of spending the money taken from the evil rich people and us not working for it....if it weren't for us the economy would collapse. Just ask Nancy P..[DU/mode]

Wanna bet? I didn't get the 2008 "stimulus payment" from Frau Pelosi. Seems that I made too much. So my "reward"? Pay MORE in taxes--you don't think that's NOT a penalty? The fact that you get MORE in refunds due to EIC than you paid in is fair to me?
So on that score, yeah, it DOES suck.

They bitch about this but there is silence when it comes to pay raises for the military.
But seeing how the last dim president treated us it does not surprise me.
