Companies With Too Few Workers May Do Nothing About It Updated at 11:45 AM

Companies With Too Few Workers May Do Nothing About It
Posted: October 9, 2010 at 8:14 am
One of the recurring nightmares that the Administration and many economists have is the that fear of the recession and a drive for profit will keep American companies from hiring new workers, even if they need them. The theory goes that firms will live on the edge of productivity which means that they will squeeze every last ounce of work out of every last employee.
About 38% of those who do have a job say their company is understaffed according to a new Gallup poll. Workers may exaggerate the need for new colleagues because they believe they have to labor themselves to fill the void.
Another 52% of those polled say that their companies have the right numbers of people.
The data show that the job market still faces the obvious challenge that companies will not add to payrolls which could keep unemployment above 9.5%, a level where it has been for 14 months–a period of time which has not been matched since The Great Depression.
The more insidious and less obvious issue is the government will have to pay to assist those without jobs or allow them to become indigent in greater number. Estimates are that the number of people who have been out of work for over 99 weeks and have no unemployment financial support at all could reach 3 million by the end of the year. That number will grow rapidly if there is not significant job creation within the private sector. The government has begun to layoff workers as the unemployment data from the last four months show. That adds even more people to the group of millions who look for work to replace jobs they have lost.
Company by company the chances of a jobs recovery has been destroyed and it appears that is likely to continue.
Results for this Gallup poll are based on telephone interviews conducted Aug. 5-8, 2010, with a random sample of 499 adults, aged 18 and older, living in the continental U.S. who are employed full or part time, selected using random-digit-dial sampling.

Gee i wonder why that would be.
maybe if they were allowed to take food stamps they could hire someone. :-)

1. if the dems survive the coming Halocaust in November....
with a majority they are going to have to start government work programs because obviously the "free enterprise" system is no longer working in what is left of this country. we don't have much to look forward to do we?
That's the ticket have Barry force them to hire people.
On top of raising their taxes, increasing health care costs, and any other way Barry can squeeze a dime out of them they should be bankrupt by Feb. that will serve those evil rich corporations well. :whatever:

5. If they had done that in the first place...
on the scale it needed to be done, there wouldn't be a coming holocaust. I blame Republican obstructionism working exactly as planned, and the noise machine for duping gullible people into going along with it.
Uh huh you guys have large majorities for the moment and it's all the GOPs fault.
Hell anytime the GOP obstructed it bought a few more days before everything fell apart.

Well let's see, Uncle Bumbler convinced your buds to drop nearly a trillion dollars into what he said would do exactly that!
It worked so frikkin' well, didn't it?
DUmbass!
-
I know where I work we are running on a to-the-bone schedule and only hiring if someone gets fired/retires/dies...maybe. If your position was "non-essential" then someone or a couple of alternating someones will get pulled tighter to half ass the job for now.
The future still isn't bright enough to wear shades.

Now what business fears? Just what asinine college econ text book idea our young inexperienced and inept president will trot out next. That's why no one is hiring....and ... also...THERE ARE NO F*CKING ORDERS!

JUKIN!! :hi5:
You said that perfectly. These fools in the White House couldn't run a car wash. No business sense or common sense. Anti-business and anti-American pieces of garbage. :censored:

With the "baby boomers" all coming right along, healthcare should be growing frantically to get ready. Instead, even healthcare is starting to cut back. With O's nice, new healthcare law coming right along to wipe out a goodly portion of medical care in the US just when we'll need it most... :thatsright:
-
How come no one mentions that companies are reluctant from hiring new employee's because of the uncertainty of future health care costs? They're not going to hire someone just to lay them off because the company can no longer afford to keep them.
The media outlets that I listen to have been citing this as a reason for months now.
-
Not just healthcare costs. With the tax increases in January looming larger than ever, companies simply won't be able to afford hiring anyone new, and may not be able to keep the employees they have.
Can you say, "double-dip recession"? I knew ya could!

I seriously think we're doing the second dip already. Things were better earlier this year but now we're well into another ride downwards. January is likely to be the bottom or close to it. November will be the deciding factor on whether we blast through the bottom of the track and contuine downwards or catch the G's as we ride back up again.

Nope--it's gonna get WORSE. Think March/April of next year when the first quarter taxes for corps are due. After people have had a few paychecks to take in just how much "hope and change" REALLY costs.
I wish the worst would be over in January. Not even close.

Yup--just as the Presidential contenders really get going. :fuelfire:

Yep, "It's the economy stupid"....wait a minute....I think some ASS has already used that one...Oh well, back to the drawing board.

Yes, and if we tax the rich, then you can guarantee these companies will not hire new workers. My department at work needs about three other employees, but it's not in the budget to hire more people. Do the democrats really think taxing the rich is the smart thing to do right now?

I'd like to disagree with you.....
but the lack of actual knowledge in this Administration in any subject other than spending and jacking their jaws is mind boggling. They crow about the stock market going over 11000 on the Dow, but fail
to realize that it was 3rd quarter earnings that carried the market. They crow about 95000 new private sector jobs as if they actually created them. They have no clue of what is going to happen in 2011.
November, 2010 is coming, then we focus on 2012 and 2014.

A poor man has never given me a job!! DUmmies just don't get it.
We aren't hiring either and we're not replacing people either. In fact, we all got "new and exciting" job descriptions.
It ain't over. Not by a long shot. We're gonna want Jimmy Carter back before it's over. Ugh.

The primitives should be cheering this on as if it were the second coming. Honestly, there's some days it appears as if they don't even fully understand what their political viewpoints ultimate goals are. Probably one of the main reasons when it comes to liberal ideology, the primitives are at the bottom of the totem pole.

The problem with doctors vowing to just retire, rather than submit, has not even been addressed yet! Hell, I don't think it got more than a 5 second mention in the media when the reprt came out, right after they passed this stinkin' abortion of healthcare!

AR, I wrote my Dem congresscreep a very pointed letter on that very topic. All I got was a response saying "thank you for your civil-toned letter." He still voted for it. After all the shit hit the fan, he tried to backpedal on the 1099 issue, and introduced some legislation that didn't get traction. Thanks, pal.
I am optimistic we can shitcan him in a few weeks.
Today, I am very depressed and upset about the the Bush Tax Cuts extensions. These asshats in congress have no idea what it's like to live on a salary such as mine. I cannot afford the $2K or so more in a year. Not living in New York, I can't. I dunno, I think we're going to have to cancel Christmas, or just have a religious, non-material Christmas this year. First time ever in my life.

We are very short-staffed at my work, but finance won't release the money to hire more. They seem to be taking the approach of "if the work can get done with fewer employees, then we will get by with fewer". My paychecks like the overtime, but it is pretty exhausting at times. Pretty much everybody has more to do than is really comfortable, but it has to get done so we put in a little extra time here and there to get it done. Just having more administrative support would help, but it doesn't look like that is coming anytime soon.

Funny thing I noticed: Where was the asshat who wrote this pile of shit (and the DUmbass minions) when ships were rolling into declared combat zones at 65% or lower manning? Where is all the concern for the overstretched and underfunded active duty members?
*spit*
So 38% say understaffed while 52% say otherwise, huh? Now, what can we draw from that? Myself, it means more overtime and more opportunity for me. I like to work and the more you throw at me, the better.
The other 38%? Hmmmm....

The business cost environment is wildly unpredictable and could be changed drastically by the lame duck Congress, even with more than enough orders coming in to keep the lights on (And an awful lot of businesses are still hand-to-mouth for the minimum on that one), no manager in their right mind would be hiring anything besides key-personnel replacements and temps until January.

How very true. Everyone seems to wear 5 hats at a typical job these days. Do more for a pay cut or a cut in hours.
The field that I am in, employers are only looking to hire people as contract work or as a temp job. Doesn't seem like employers are hiring at all. I like how all the dems and leftist idiots try to tell us the economy is getting better too! Is it really now?!?! ::) :whatever: :bird:

A small company that hires full time employees takes on huge risks that have grown exponentially under Obama and his reign of incompetence.
First, the employee may have exaggerated their capabilities and will be replaced. these people cost a lot as they actually take productive hours from current employees.
Second, there is no sign of what the hell is going to break lose with the HellCare bill. Clearly, insurance costs will go up. The question is 25% or 65%.
Third, labor laws in kalifornia are just slightly to the right of france's. That makes it very expensive to get bad employees of the payroll.
Fourth, unemployment insurance is going through the roof. Every time they extend those benifitss for the unemployed, it has to come from somewhere. In this case it is 50-200% increases in unemployment insurance.
Fifth, Workers comp rates are on almost a straight up trajectory. Even with no accidents, high teck manufacturing, WC can reach 50%. I have a friend that owned a tree service. His WC payments were 105% of workers pay.
Sixth, Obama wants more anti-business labor laws. Business sees this and does not want to gamble on what these will be.
Seventh, GDP growth is at or below rising population. That is not a very optimistic figure. No business owner is thinking of expanding with basically NO GROWTH.
Eighth, there are no orders and there are no RFQ/RFPs. There will be none until Obama is out.

Pardon me for being so often correct.
Well, you're excused! :-) 'Cause you are so often correct. The thing of it is, these idiots don't even see these common-sense reasons. How can such stupid people manage to dupe so many people into voting them into office?
