Democrats Ready an October Surprise for the Overconfident GOP
Republicans have been talking for months as if at least a partial takeover of Congress is a virtual certainty, but a new survey and analysis released by Democracy Corps today not only shows the election tightening, but also a growing possibility that Republicans may yet snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
The Democracy Corps survey showed a 6 point movement towards the Democrats. This is in line with the recently released NBC News/Wall Street Journal and ABC News/Washington Post poll which both revealed a movement towards the Democrats. As they pointed out in their analysis, there is recent historical precedent for elections shifting in the final month, “This is not a fool’s errand. In the 1998 election, we conducted national polls starting in September to see if Democrats could push back against the Republican overreach on Ken Starr and impeachment, as Democrats faced the prospect of historic losses in both the House and Senate. Only two weeks before the election did the plates shift and a Democratic counter-message on impeachment became effective in our polls. In the end, Democrats lost no net seats in Senate, gained five House seats and Newt Gingrich resigned.â€

It has been my lifelong observation that the MSM will say that dems are doing better then they are and while races may tighten a bit at this pre homestretch period they also quickly harden as the last couple of weeks arrive.

I was reading analysis of these polls from James Toranto's opinion journal yesterday, and he broke it down really well. He also laid out what the polls are saying today compared to the same time in 1994, and the discontentment with the Dems is almost 2:1 worse today. They can tell themselves all they want, but it's not looking good for them at all, and rightfully so.

He also laid out what the polls are saying today compared to the same time in 1994, and the discontentment with the Dems is almost 2:1 worse today. They can tell themselves all they want, but it's not looking good for them at all, and rightfully so.
I'm not fond of the way the news media throws around ideological labels, because they're sloppy in applying them, and usually mis-apply them; their idea of "right" and "left" and "center" has no similarities with the standard scientific academic applications of the labels.
But that being said, I've noticed the past few weeks that the media are telling their audience that the Republican candidates of 2010 are much further to the "right" than the Republican candidates of 1994 had been.
One hopes to God that is correct, but this is the media after all, with about as much perception of political labels as the primitives (Hillary Clinton being a "centrist" or Olympia Snowe being "right wing" or the late Vast Teddy being a "moderate, ad nauseam). I surely hope the winners are more conservative than they had been 16 years ago, but only time will tell.
