Food for thought: Americans Waste 40% of Their Food
I'm predominantly a vegetarian, heading toward vegan and the thought of the animal life we allow to suffer just so we can gorge ourselves - and throw away 40% of our food - fills me with despair. Plus, of course, the fact that we THROW THE FOOD AWAY AND DON'T FEED THE HUNGRY.
For those of us concerned with frugal and energy efficient living, this article is something to think about.

Americans Waste 40% of Their Food
In the United States, it seems that food is everywhere we look.
Driving down the highway, we see signs for a plethora of fast food restaurants, and food companies spend millions of dollars each year coming up with new value-added food products to attract consumer dollars.
This has not only resulted in an increasingly overweight population, but a citizenry that has begun to waste food at levels never seen before -- even in the middle of a recession and with hunger rising.
A new study has found that Americans waste 1,400 calories per person per day, or nearly 40% of the county's entire food supply. But that's not even the most disturbing statistic.
In order to produce the 1,400 calories that Americans toss into the trash everyday, we use one-fourth of the country's supply of fresh water. In addition, three hundred million barrels of oil are used each year to produce food that eventually just gets thrown away.
What the heck is wrong with us America? This is completely and utterly unacceptable.

1. I work at a hotel doing food service...
At least where I work it's way more than 40%.
franksolich has a possible solution; FedEx it to Las Vegas.
The gigantic primitive, the "Systematic Chaos" primitive, lives in Las Vegas, and after dipping down below 400 pounds, he learned he was expected to get a job so as to get off the social security disability gravy-train.
It scared him so much he's been gorging down Big Macs by the bushel.
One suspects the gigantic primitive can take care of the matter of wasted food.....at least for circa seven states.

What does eating meat have to do with wasting food? God damn preachy hippies. All that study does is measure the difference between calories produced and calories consumed. Nowhere does it mention which types of food are consumed.

....and how many of those calories were spent in unproductive ways by the lazy DUmmies.
Food wasted by unproductive DUmmies = another 40%.

I find this study to be hogwash! Much of what these asshats are talkin' about is recycled in any number of ways! Hell, the homeless go thru the dumpsters at at McD's and BK in every city I know of!

Around here, the only thing obese is the two Basset's, that are more than happy to take care of our leftovers!

I forget where I was reading about how many veggies that grocery stores threw away on a daily basis...... It seemed to me that it was a two-fold problem; 1.) TOO many veggies being shipped to the store & 2.) the store was receiving veggies that were close to spoiling.

Rarely do you hear about throwing cows, pigs, and chickens out. That must make carnivores more efficient.

Maybe if we didn't send Brazil and Mexico 2 millions dollars EACH, for their DEEP water drilling in the GOM, we could have fed plenty of hungry people here in the U.S. Ever think of that you DUmmies?!

I found a funnel worked real well with my kids, especially for the "strained peas"! Of course it was back in the day before they could call the cops!!!!

We don't waste food at all. Long-in-the-tooth leftovers get thrown in the woods for any critter who wants it. My neighbor lady works at the grocery, and out-dated produce she give to us to feed the wild rabbits, who in turn provide a valuable food-chain link to various other critters.
That said, food regulations are pretty strict, and results in a lot of throw-away (for those who don't have a convenient woods). Hippies, take it up with your big government regulators. Restaurants can't really give a lot of stuff away to homeless, because they deserve the highest standards of a five-star hotel. Needless to say, this results in dumpster diving.

I worked my husband's bread route with him, when he had one. Time was, you would take the slightly old stuff back, and the outlet would sell it at drastically reduced prices (still do.) REALLY old stuff, we (used to) throw in a bin. Farmers would drop by and load up whatever they could take for feed for the farm animals, free of charge. Sounds like quite a deal, huh?
New York got its underwear in a wad, convinced that this would pose a risk of poor people eating 2-day old bread, and they just couldn't have that. So, they put the kibosh on the whole deal. The REALLY old bread had to be destroyed.

I have both Hostess and Entenmann's bread stores in the area. They are handy when things are tight.

I used to go by and stock up on Twinkies and cup cakes from a store like that! Hell, twinkies have a 99 year half life, for cripes sake!
