Obama: 'All Americans are safer' because of Medal of Honor winner's actions
Edited on Wed Oct-06-10 06:21 PM by Philosoraptor
http://content.usatoday.com/communities/theoval/post/20...
As the Afghanistan war enters its 10th year on Thursday, President Obama awarded the nation's highest military honor today to a Green Beret who gave his life to save more than 20 U.S. and Afghan comrades.
The Medal of Honor went to the parents of Army Staff Sgt. Robert Miller, 24, who drew enemy fire away from his squad after a 2008 ambush by the Taliban in northwest Afghanistan.
During a somber ceremony at the White House, Obama said Miller embodies the dangerous yet often secretive work of the Special Forces.
"Few Americans ever see their service," Obama said. "All Americans are safer because of it."

As soon as I saw the title of this thread I knew the DUmp would react badly.

1. I don't accept that or believe it....
Nothing that the American military is doing in Afghanistan makes us any safer or improves our lives in any way. There is zero positive justification for the wars against either Iraq or Afghanistan.
Then impeach Obama. :-)

4. ok, what the **** would you like him to tell the family, at his MOH ceremony? that they are suckers
and the kid died in vain (which basically, he did)?
jesus christ, have you that much of a tin ear?
Well if he did he would have at least been honest about how he felt.
This happened when * was president so the war was still bad back then.

3. While I salute Sgt Miller for his incredible bravery and for sacrificing his life for his comrades..
his actions have had a net effect of ZERO on the safety of Americans in the US.
Saying otherwise is simply pandering.
No saying other wise is appreciating that he had the balls to defend the country. Most of you cowards at DU don't even have enough courage to read a message board that allows conservatives to speak.

So thanks for posting that article.
Then along comes the shame that people can't quit pissing on the wheaties long enough to just let it stand...

some folks will find any excuse to fire up the outrage cannon.

8. Those parents raised a son who gave up his life for his comrades
and for some Afghans as well. They must be so proud, even in their grief--God bless them.
Sometimes I think there may be some hope for a select few of the primitives.

The actions of the US military overseas have saved countless lives in the US.
Regrettably most of those lives reside in liberal metropolitan areas.
OUT OF AFGHANISTAN NOW!

Very true. How many times has he praised or mentioned how well our military does over there fighting the wars? Almost never, only close to election time.

And I would happily buy you the fuel to run your wood chipper, and serve you a sandwich and a beer when the task was complete. Hell. I would even power wash your chipper while you ate that sandwich. (The only reason I wouldn't help you with the actual chipping is my knack for self-injury, can't do as much damage with the power washer.)

How many MOH has he given out 2 and Bush did so many more. I bet he hated giving it out he is just using the military to TRY to stay in office

You sorry sack of dog shit. You are example A of people that should be excluded from the protections provided by those of us in uniform. Since you seem to take great pleasure in spitting on what we do...how we do it and when we do it.
To all of you lurking DUmmies...EADC.

I'd be more than happy to push him out the front gate and onto the streets of Tarin Kot all by his lonesome.
-
Hey lurking DUmmies...THIS is waht people iwth real courage do:
First, it was just a single insurgent, jumping out from behind a boulder. Then, the whole valley seemed to explode with gunfire. Within seconds, Rob and his patrol were pinned down, with almost no cover -- bullets and rocket-propelled grenades raining down from every direction. And when enemy reinforcements poured in, the odds were overwhelming. Rob’s small patrol of two dozen men was nearly surrounded by almost 150 insurgents.
With the enemy just feets away -- some so close he could see their faces -- Rob held his ground. Despite the chaos around him, he radioed back enemy positions. As the only Pashto speaker on his team, he organized the Afghan soldiers around him. But the incoming fire, in the words of one soldier, was simply “astounding.â€
Rob made a decision. He called for his team to fall back. And then he did something extraordinary. Rob moved in the other direction -- toward the enemy, drawing their guns away from his team and bringing the fire of all those insurgents down upon himself.
The fighting was ferocious. Rob seemed to disappear into clouds of dust and debris, but his team could hear him on the radio, still calling out the enemy’s position. And they could hear his weapon still firing as he provided cover for his men. And then, over the radio, they heard his voice. He had been hit. But still, he kept calling out enemy positions. Still, he kept firing. Still, he kept throwing his grenades. And then they heard it -- Rob’s weapon fell silent.
Like the firefighters and first responders on 9/11...he moved forward while others were moving back. Wounded once he continued to push forward towards the enemy. It took another rifle round entering his chest under his left armpit to stop his one man offensive against the enemy.
Selfless service...putting the needs of others above your own...even if it means your life. Those of us in uniform understand that concept and live it every day.
It's a concept you idiots will NEVER understand.
-
When GWB used a term like "Americans are safer" with regard to our military the primitives screeched to high heaven. The ones in that thread who sound like they're making some kind of sense are doing so out of loyalty to their party and their guy in office.
RIP and Godspeed SSG Miller. You're a hero to me no matter who is occupying the Oval Office.

All this while the Obama White House was busy turning away MoH recipients and their families.
http://www.military.com/news/article/wh-tour-denied-for-hero-heros-family.html?ESRC=navy-a.nl
September 30, 2010
Spokesman-Review
Medal of Honor recipient Thomas Norris was turned away from a White House tour on Sept. 25 after the Secret Service neglected to clear him. Also nixed from the tour was the family of another Medal of Honor recipient, the late Vernon Baker, because the hero's grandson was wearing a T-shirt and shorts.
The 10-year-old boy's T-shirt was emblazoned with the image of his celebrated grandfather, who had just been buried a day earlier at Arlington National Cemetery. Norris, a Navy lieutenant who was awarded the Medal of Honor for rescuing two downed pilots in Vietnam, had accompanied accompanied the Baker family to Washington, D.C., for the military burial.
Baker was awarded the Medal of Honor for heroic actions in an attack on a German stronghold during World War II.
Since the incident the White House has moved to make amends by inviting the Baker family and Norris back.
“We would have loved to have hosted 10-year-old Vernon and his family at the White House and we have reached out to the Baker family and Lt. Norris to communicate our deep regret and invite them back to the White House,†spokesman Adam Abrams said. “This family, as well as Lt. Norris, have given so much to our nation and they have our sincerest appreciation and our apologies for this misunderstanding.â€
Norris, a retired FBI agent and Navy Seal, said he was turned away at the White House by an employee of the Office of Management and Budget because the Secret Service had not run a security clearance on him.
"He apologized," Norris said. "He told me the Secret Service has informed me they haven't had time to do a background check and you can't get in."
Moments later, after Norris gave up his place in the tour to the Baker family's driver, who had clearance, Baker's grandson, Vernon Pawlik, 10, was denied entry because he was wearing shorts and the T-Shirt bearing his grandfather's image. Also on the tour were Vernon Baker's widow, Heidy and her daughter Alexandra.
At that point the family gave up and left the White House, Norris said.
It's unclear why tour officials made reference to the boy's attire. There's no dress code for White House tours and the St. Maries Gazette newspaper in the family's hometown reported today that the family had checked about possible dress codes ahead of time just to make sure.
Norris said he wondered why when questions arose no one in charge stepped forward to assess the circumstances.
"You would think there would be someone there to stand up and say, 'I'm a supervisor and we can make an exception" for a living Medal of Honor recipient and the grandson of another.
Norris said that little Vernon was looking forward to the tour and the chance to meet President Obama. He even bought a copy of Obama's book, in case he got a chance to get the president's signature.
As it turned out, Obama was out of town on Saturday.
The whole incident "is beyond understanding," said Norris, who was awarded the nation's highest honor for military service in 1976 for his actions in Vietnam in 1972.
Vernon Baker, the boy's grandfather, was the only living black World War II veteran to receive the Medal of Honor for uncommon valor. In 1945 he rallied the troops after their commander deserted and took a German stronghold in Italy, taking out three machine gun nests, two bunkers and an observation post.
-
Norris, a retired FBI agent and Navy Seal, said he was turned away at the White House by an employee of the Office of Management and Budget because the Secret Service had not run a security clearance on him.
Now take this and compare it will the fact that Bill Ayers seems to have his own key to the front door.
Unbelievable...
-
BTW, DUmmies--(and Obama, but I repeat myself):
One does not "win" the CMH. It is awarded. One is a recipient of the CMH.
Thus endeth the sermon, thus endeth the lesson.

I don't think I've heard this jerk say a positive word about ANYTHING. Of course he spends his days with bugs and hippies. Still, that's no excuse. He lives in one of the most beautiful areas on the west coast yet he's so freaking negative all the time. Maybe he needs to get his fat, ugly hands around some Humboldt County homegrown brownies with extra buds and chocolate chips.

If you are indeed a Vet, which I thoroughly doubt, BTW, then I propose you immediately walk onto the nearest Marine Base and tell them exactly what you posted here! Let me know when you're goin', cause I wanna be there when you get carved into small enough pieces to feed my pigs! I sure hope it doesn't make them sick! Wait, I'm confused. Was or Wasn't Bush President when 9/11 happened? According to Penisrapper BJ Clintoon was President.

Unless I lost a year somewhere the Afghanistan War started in 2001 and this is 2010 still right? Did I sleep through a year somewhere and this is '11 or did the war start earlier somehow?

Just like all the DUmbshits were restless and agitated anticipating the release of the daily casualties when the WOT began - so that they could hold up the names of the dead as proof that "the bastard Bush has gotten this country into another Vietnam-esque quagmire" - they're all breathless and agitated anticipating the 10-year anniversary of the beginning of combat operations in the WOT, largely for the same reasons.

Sometimes I wonder if Heinlein had it right with his path to citizenship in Starship Troopers. Want to be a citizen with voting rights you have to serve.

Randy, the statement appears accurate to me. The war started October 7th 2001 so it nine years and one day old. The operative word being "enters" meaning we are in fact "entering" or "starting" the 10th year of the war, unless I'm missing something.

Exactly what difference does it make?
Any idiot with half a frikkin' brain can figure out, if we hadn't taken the Taliban down, they would have been exporting Terrorism by the truckload! Hell, their best friends were Osama and Al Queda!
Where the hell is the Women's movement on this? Where the hell are Jessie "the leach", Jackson and Al "the black mailer", Sharpton on this?
They sure as hell had a lot to say when "W" was in office!
The hypocrisy of the left is astounding!!!!!!!!!!
****in' assholes! It's amazing to me these people's principals are tied to politics! If they can't have their way, then screw everyone! That's so ****ed up, we would need one of their 20 year college educated pukes to explain it to us, and them!!!!!!!!! There's not a single one of them that would even come close to answerin' that question!
How much of a lemming do you have to be in order to only have a conscience when your politician is in power????
It's absolutely disgusting!!!
They should be ashamed of themselves! However we all know, if they can't call the shots, then the whole frikkin' world is at fault! Couldn't be they are on the wrong side of the American opinion, could it? Of course not! After all, they're the smartest people to ever inhabit the frikkin' planet!

It should be that we are starting the 9th year of the war. The 10th year would start on Oct. 7th, 2011.
The 10th year would end on October 7th 2011. Here is a yearly breakdown.
October 7th 2001- October 7th 2002 1 year complete
October 7th 2002- October 7th 2003 2 years complete
October 7th 2003- October 7th 2004 3 years complete
October 7th 2004- October 7th 2005 4 years complete
October 7th 2005- October 7th 2006 5 years complete
October 7th 2006- October 7th 2007 6 years complete
October 7th 2007- October 7th 2008 7 years complete
October 7th 2008- October 7th 2009 8 years complete
October 7th 2009- October 7th 2010 9 years complete (thus the 10th year begins October 8th 2010)
October 7th 2010- October 7th 2011 10 years complete
Not that it is extremely important but we need to be accurate, otherwise we look like the DUmmies.
