Oh my.

One wonders why this isn't getting more traction in the media.

Quote
The online political discussion forum Democratic Underground is fighting back against a lawsuit filed by copyright troll Righthaven LLC, arguing in court documents filed Monday that the short excerpt of a news article at issue in the suit is a clear case of fair use.

Quote
"Democratic Underground is the largest independent discussion forum for liberals on the Internet. Thousands of people discuss and debate political issues on our site every day, particularly now during election season. Online discussion often requires quoting from news sources -- a legal fair use of the material," said Democratic Underground founder David Allen. "By targeting short excerpts of news articles with their sham copyright claims, Righthaven is chilling free and open discussion on the Internet."

I read part of the lawsuit and counterclaim this morning.  DU is being represented by lawyers from the Electronic Frontier Foundation and it looks like they have put up a pretty good defense (or at least the start to one).  What I got a kick out of what that they actually claimed to have "over 150,000 registered members".

Well, it is true that they have over 150,000 registered members.  It doesn't mean they're active members.  What did the latest DUmp Diver/Violator report show, about 4k?

I see that Righthaven is suing for $150,000.  One dollar for every registered member?  :evillaugh:

Not even close... more like 2,500.

I must have missed that.  Hilarious!  They were always trending from 4000 to 5000 in the past.

Well, that makes this line from $kimmer pretty inaccurate:

I am sure it is not for the reasons that I would fight back but I give it to Skin for going after that shakedown house.

Well now, my fellow alum is no dummy.

Somebody else is paying the bill.

Besides recruiting attorneys to represent Righthaven defendants for free as a public service, attorneys for the EFF are representing the Democratic Underground LLC.....

I see the potential for this to draw more eyes to the DUmp, and the possibility of more trolls flooding the place.  :-)

I think Bad needs to offer some of his data to Righthaven to undermine $kimmer's claims. Oh, the DUmmies would be frothing at the mouths if they lost their suit because of it.  :-)

I think that they have had 150K register. 140K have been TS'd, but they registered initially at one time.

The statement is misleading but true.
