Title: Need to know whose ass to kick
Post by: Evil_Conservative on September 25, 2010, 08:30:30 PM
Who is in charge of the sound levels of commercials vs the television show?  Is it the station?

I am ready to put my foot up the ass of someone at TBS for making their commercials five times louder than the actual show.  It's a game in our home.  Who can get the remote the fastest just as the commercial is about to come on.

Please tell me I am not the only one who is a tight ass about the loud commercials?

By federal law commercials can be no louder that the program they are aired on.  However, that loudness is determined by the loudest part of the show, even if it is only say a gunshot the lasts milliseconds.

TBS is a "cable broadcaster", and if it is a sporting event that you are watching they "contract out" the truck and the camera crew to cover the event (they don't own their own)......the operator in the truck (at the stadium) is controlling the audio levels, and uplinking them to TBS, who downlinks them to their cable customers........if the problem is not there when watching TBS's non sports programming, it is likely the board operator in the uplink truck that isn't paying attention to his spot insertion (audio) levels......usually they are part-time folks, and can be less than professional.....

Just FYI, the "trucks" that I'm speaking of are the ones that if you attend a televised game, you will see in the parking lot near the stadium, with miles of cables running to them.....they consist of two units....usually a large semi-trailer, which is the camera and ops production center, and a second large truck with a big satellite dish on top.....this is the "uplink" truck.....after the action is produced in the semi-trailer, it is fed to the uplink truck to transmit to the satellite for rebroadcast.

Bottom line, complain to TBS.....if you can find someone there to complain to.....however, if the problem is there all the time, more than likely your cable company is inserting their own local commercials, and their operators are generally the worst in the broadcast industry......I've seen cable companies that actually recruit homeless people for board operators.......

No some channels are worse than others. We have a newer TV it claimed to be even on sound. I noticed in movies it stays the same, not on commercials though. I make it a point if the commercial is loud I will not buy that product at all.

No sporting events.  I just wanted to watch King of Queens without having the urge to throw my remote through the screen.

This is a international problem...

Annoys the hell out of me - every station every program. It's worst on the live sports and prime-time movie sessions.

Are you watching cable, off-air, or satellite (where is the signal coming from to your TV)?

I'm pretty sure it's cable.  I'm watching it through my digital box from Cox.  It was probably local ads too, but I pay little to no attention to commercials.

What's off-air?

Yes what is "off-air?"

Off-air is if you use an antenna......since you are using Cox Cable, and if the ads are for local companies, the cable company is inserting them in the programming, they are the culprits.

Call the cable company (good luck with this, they LOVE to insulate themselves from their customers), and ask for the Chief Engineer (sometimes they are called the Chief Technician).....assuming you can talk to him, tell him what you are experiencing.  It will be helpful if you are pre-armed with the channel, the specific program, and the times.  This way he can isolate the operator on duty that is not doing his/her job, and correct the problem.

For Cable TV, the techs that set up the ad insertions don't always do a very good job. We have the same problem here. The local ads are the worst but there ARE some cable channels that DO have their ad volume louder than the show.

Magnavox used to make SMART SOUND TVs which kept the same volume no matter what. They were awesome.

That is interesting. I didn't know that.

I remember seeing commercials for those. Wonder if they still make something like that. Seems like that should come with every TV with all the fancy stuff that is out there these days.

I found a volume regulator on newegg.  It's $30 with shipping.  It doesn't have HDMI inputs on it, though.

Some HDMIs don't support audio...

Besides, the newer digital TVs don't need a cable box. (For cable users)

We had one, a 27" , and it was great to have in the bedroom, no worry about the unexpected blaring commercial waking someone up.

We had DirecTV until we moved a week ago, now we have Comcast.

The commercials are sometimes so loud, they hurt my ears.....satellite or cable...local or not, it doesn't seem to matter.... :bawl:

M just cruises through and it doesn't bother him...I go nuts.  :banghead:

I drives me crazy too.  My husband turns the TV up really loud, walks away, and then when a commercial comes on I cannot find the remote to turn it down.

Oh, and I had no idea there was a federal law regulating television commercial noise levels.  That's kind of stupid.  It's annoying to have the commercials louder than the show, but c'mon now.

M does just what your husband does.  :hammer:

The law was supposed to go into effect during the summer...but if it did, I have not noticed any change in the commercial volume.  :(

I see more infomercials these days. More than I remember 10 years ago. I rather see test patterns than infomercials.

Every once in a while I forget just how frequently commercials dominate the airwaves and I sit down to watch them. What irritates the shit out of me is the extent to which my commercials are interrupted by that bullshit program that's on.

I'm probably guilty of turning up the sound (gotta love that Progressive Insurance chick, "Happens to me all the time!") and walking away too. Then again, I can't quite make out the Capitol One heathens when they're demanding to know what's in my wallet, so the sound goes up.

And that damned gecko. His accent is so thick I can't make it out. So the volume goes up.

What's the problem???
