Ky. man claims caffeine insanity in wife's death
A Kentucky man accused of strangling his wife is poised to claim excessive caffeine from sodas, energy drinks and diet pills left him so mentally unstable he couldn't have knowingly killed her, his lawyer has notified a court.
Woody Will Smith, 33, is scheduled for trial starting Monday on a murder charge in the May 2009 death of Amanda Hornsby-Smith, 28.
Defense attorney Shannon Sexton filed notice with the Newport court of plans to argue his client ingested so much caffeine in the days leading up to the killing that it rendered him temporarily insane _ unable even to form the intent of committing a crime.

I can well understand the effects of Caffeine.
Working 12 hours a day 6 days a week did me in and I was drinking JOLT to stay awake.
After 2 weeks of 3-4 a day drinks, on my day off I was traveling with my kids to the beach and an out of state Midwestern license plate with Q-Tips ahead of me came to a screeching halt in the fast lane.
Cars, trucks went everywhere, I was lucky and found a hole to get into out of the way but 18 wheelers were jackknifed and 8-9 other cars were rear ending them selves.
I waited until all the crashing noise died down and something snapped, I have never been so angry in my life. The kids were in their teens and we all jumped out to help others out of their mangled cars.
The poor elderly couple that came close to killing us all were in a sort of la-la land and drove off.
When the cops caught them they explained that they became confused by all the trees, they came from a state where one had few trees just grass land.
Why had they taken off, well they explained that they were no part of the accident and were late for a dinner date.
For days after that I wanted to beat them all up. I could not believe it but the expression of seeing red was what happend to me.
Yup it happends sometimes, you mix any kind of medication with caffeine and Lord knows what can happen.
That does not mean that I have any sympathy for this dude----40 to life would make me happy.

:wtf2:
And they wonder why the law profession is held in such disrespect?
I would say I've heard every defense now, but am sure something even more inane will pop up soon.

You haven't got a freakin clue. Stand an SRO midwatch with no relief in the days pre-Red Bull when you've been up for almost 72 hours.
THEN you might understand. Trust me, toots, when you see guys SNORTING No-Doz in Nuclear Power School in order to stay awake and make their "suggested" study hours, then you can talk.

Once again, I have to agree. :hi5:

I've had numerous caffeine "drunk" days and never once felt the need to kill someone. Just sayin'

That's because the only ingredient you ingested was caffeine. Methinks some folks offering up those Twinkie type defenses were also heavy into the major pharmaceuticals.
