Witchcraft roundup...from an actual witch

Okay peeps--been reading the various threads about O'Donnell's latest whoopsie, and while real witches and pagans are doing great explaining the truth of the practice in those threads, it's so scattered that I thought I'd collect all the truths and falsehoods in one thread. (I have been a practicing witch for more than 15 years.)

- Witchcraft is a real religion, recognized in the U.S. While "witch" can describe any follower of the faith, "Wiccans" are often defined as followers of Gardnerian witchcraft (the ol' famous-for-practicing-nekkid faction), but that can vary. Some witches prefer to be called pagans because of the bad rap the word "witch" gets. (I tend to be one of these people.)

- Witches do NOT worship Satan. In fact, witches don't even believe in the devil.

- Satanism is an entirely different belief system.

- Witches do have altars. They are sacred locations (we open up a vortex/connection with the divine at that spot) where we do our work. They are places where we keep the representations of the four directions (earth--a stone, air--incense, fire--candles, and water--dish with salt water), as well as any statues or images that represent the divine to us (these can vary greatly).

- Witches do NOT use bodily fluids, like the "blood" O'Donnell claims she saw on an altar. We do, however, use "dragon's blood" (a resin) as an incense (powder or stick) and in a liquid form as ink.

- Witches do not have orgies. Witches do not eat babies. Witches do not sacrifice living animals. Witches do not cast harmful spells on other people. Caveat: most witches are "white" witches who DO NOT wish harm upon others (note that this is not racist!); however, there are those who practice gray or black magic, and these are more likely to cast spells to harm.

I don't know what-all Ms. O'Donnell saw or thought she saw, but it was not the true Craft. There is a lot of "wannabe-ism" in college, with kids mixing up satanism and black magic and who knows what else, I will admit, but again, this is not the true Craft.

And finally, may I just say that if this turns the crazy right-wingers off of her, then by all means...SHE'S A WITCH! BURRRRN HER!

Any other questions, feel free to post! :hi:

My sister & her friend used to believe they were witches.  They might still believe it, but I don't live in my parent's house to see their 'witchcraft'.  My friends & I made fun of them all the time and they threatened to cast spells on us.  It was quite entertaining.

This whole thread reminded me of those fun days.

I'm not sure where this witch thing came from as I have no idea what O'Donnell said.

Meh, Pagans.  They're basically harmless, I don't have anything against them.

I saw the video clip, it sounds like she knew your sister and her friends in high school, and went on a date with one of them once.

Me either.  No wonder I scored such a high 142/400 on that political test. :uhsure:

Right now, I think that if satan himself were running on the conservative ticket against a DIM, we would vote for him.

That "lesser of two evils" thing comes to mind.

This is really stupid, reaching back to high school days.  Who didn't do goofy shit in their teenage years?  It's lame and annoying. I think I may have read a witchcraft book when I was 12 or so.  Who didn't want to be Samantha Stevens?

Neither do I.  Especially the ones that are Pagans NOT because of Charmed.

Many Christians are annoying because they act as if they have something to prove.

Virtually all pagans are annoying because they have to prove they aren't Christians.

That was more or less true of the ones I knew in college (But then, everyone in college is that way about something usually, just not necessarily religion).  The ones I know these days are pretty low-key about it.

No kidding! When I was in college doing the whole wimmin's studies thing we all thought we identified more with that whole goddess thing.  After a while I figured out Gaia was kinda like Tinkerbell without the fairy dust...no matter how much incense you burned, daggers you danced with, or rocks and trees you prayed to she just wasn't going to jump out of the bushes and grant my every wish. Of course in the last few years I've learned that only cops jumped out of the bushes which may explain my problem.

I had a classmate who was really into D&D and truly believed he was a 300 year old elf, or something like that.

Oh yeah,  I have known those.  The ones who think they are animals are fun as well.  The REAL fun ones are the ones that claim to be empaths.  That feel everyone else's pain.   :thatsright:

I find it amazing that reporters can't look into "minor" things like voter intimidation, but spend multiple hours searching frantically for extremely valid information on conservative female candidates...like who they dated in high school.  Or how many colleges they attended.  Or where their parents took them to doctors when they were toddlers.   ::)  Could the media get any more obviously slanted than the hatchet jobs done on people like Palin and O'Donnell?   ::) ::)   :thatsright:

They're intimidated by beautiful, intelligent, independent CONSERVATIVE women because it shows the world you don't have to spend your life whining and being angry about a bunch of phantom shit you think you were "owed" by virtue of having a set of ta-tas and a vagina. Conservative women grasp the importance of the American dream, have men in their lives who aren't metrosexuals intimidated by strong women (as Sara says, "have you SEEN Todd?") They don't resent their families for holding them back and are happy with their lives and the gifts they've been given. Thus, even as they get older they still have an abundance of grace and beauty. Liberal women, however, well, just look at Helen Thomas, who apparently wears her vagina on her face.

I know of a witch that is a staunch capitalist and conservative. She owns a local shop and truly practices what she preaches. She lives a good life and puts back into the community with a business that she started with a VA loan. Everyone is welcome and even my devout catholic mother loves her. She unfortunately has to stay in the political closet with most of her customers because you know what would happen if word got out that she voted for republicans.
