Title: Best and worse job
Post by: littlelamb on September 16, 2010, 11:35:57 PM
I am sitting here at work and decided I wanted to see what people here had for their best and worse jobs and why?

my worst job was being a purchasing manager for an electronics company that was owned by a self centered over bearing micromanaging individual.

My best job is my current one; Pyrotechnician (fireworks guy) at the Disneyland Resort.

I literally had a job digging ditches.  I got hired as an apartment maintenance assistant in between cooking jobs at one point... it was awful.  Runner-up was my first job as a dishwasher in high school.

My best job to date was working at Ford in their IT department.  I really hate that I got laid off, but after helping my former co-worker at work, it seemed super-boring and I'm kinda glad I don't have to do that anymore.

Worst Job - Service manager at a large and busy electronics retail store.

Best job - Day trader and investor on my own behalf.

Worst job - waitressing.  People are too picky about their food and I'm lousy at giving a darn about their preferences.

Best job - My current one.  Occupational therapist.  Mostly with elderly.  I love seeing them get back to doing whatever it is that makes them happy.

Worst -- dining hall server in college.  What's the surest way to extreme nausea? Serving powdered eggs that are rapidly turning green in their metal pan at 6 am after little or no sleep the night before because you were indulging in an extended Happy Hour . . .  :puke:  And, yes, I had to wear a hairnet.  :p

Best -- Documentation Supervisor/Tech Writer at a small telecomm software company, the job I had for 9 years until '06 when they downsized almost to the point of extinction.  It doesn't sound like the most exciting thing to be doing, but it was interesting work and I truly enjoyed the people I worked with.  We all get together for breakfast just before Christmas every year at a local diner.  The company was bought and merged with a couple other small software companies so it's still in existence under a different name.  I will probably make some tentative employment enquiries at this year's breakfast since the project I've been working on at my current place is coming to an end next year.

Worst - Probably farm laborer when I was in high school.  Worked for my best bud's dad all summer, clearing land and building fences on a huge tract - he knew a State highway was going through it and wanted to get paid for improved land instead of woods and abandoned quarries.  I was treated well, I have to say, but the work positively blew.

Best - Tank commander.  It didn't pay for shit and the hours were unbelievable, but damn was it fun!

Worst job: Retail manager for a sporting goods store.  I was required to work 6 days a week with Sundays off.  However, they wanted inventory done every Sunday so guess what!?!?  I didn't have a day off (except Christmas) for at least 2 years.

Best job: Stay at home mom.  When the clients piss me off I can spank them and send them to their rooms.

DLR~  What a cool friggin job!!!!!!!!

Worst.

Any I had to bridge employment after 9/11, including, and not limited to housecleaning, and working the bulk mail center during the Anthrax scare.

Best?

Manager of a local Mom and Pop Pizza place.  The money and hours sucked, but at the time I was much younger, and was having much more fun.

Worst:
Test Engineer for a uninterruptible power supply (UPS) company in Irvine, CA (first job out of the Navy).  Horrible team chemistry, long hours, shitty pay, bad (unsafe) working conditions, and a married woman was screwing the boss, then using it to make everyone's life miserable.  The third day I worked there, there was a company-wide meeting.  In the mid-90's the employees gave up bonuses and payraises in order to keep their jobs.  Then by the time I was there (1999) the place was booming.  Several people asked when they'd be getting their raises back.  About the third time it was asked, the VP of that facility got up, grabbed the microphone, and said, "If you don't like what you're making here, go to work somewhere else!"

I should have gotten up and walked out then.

Best (tie):
One I'm at now from a work/challenge/pay standpoint, and being a Reactor Operator on a fast attack submarine.  Like DAT said, the pay was shitty, the hours ungodly, but man, the fun!

Worst job...fast food whatever, as a teenager.  The worst part was when the manager would "catch" me on break before all the restocking work was done and yell at me...though everyone else on shift had already taken their break.   ::)

Best...what I do now, medical equipment.  It totally sucks to get called in at 2AM, but the pay is better than I'd get doing any other electronic work, and you literally never worry about getting bored...you just appreciate the days when there is nothing more scary than running PMs.

Best, giving my opinion to women trying on bathing suits in a surf shop

Worst: Working at a photo processing lab. People would come in and complain that the color/density was off when they didn't have a clue how to operate their darned camera.

Best: Computer sales/repair (back in the early 90's). I was in my mid 20's, made great money, got to travel, had an expense account and a company car. I had many dates that I put on the expense account just cause the ladies worked for whatever company I happened to be selling to at the time.

Man those were good days.

My worse job ever would having been a server at Waffle House for the last 10 months. From the awful schedule to a manager who let waitress write the schedule to the cooks who slept instead of working. Just a awful experience all around.                                                                                           Best job was a home business I had for 7 years I loved every second of it. Meeting new people and the items were outstanding I still own a lot of it and use it all the time
