Thanks to DU for Maintaining an Open Website
One of the great things about Democratic Underground is that all parts of the form are open to members. While some areas, like the groups, require a small contribution for full participation, the vast bulk of the site is open completely to all who come here. I've been using discussion forums since before the internet actually existed, starting on BBS systems, Compuserve, and GEnie.
I've been a member of dozens of discussion forums. Many of those always maintained hidden forums, only accessible to the chosen few. I've been in some of those caves or caverns or hideaways. Generally, they are full of people sniping about other forums or members who don't have access to those areas. Almost always, they're poisonous places, full of toxic attitudes and people who have secrets they want to hide.
We are very lucky here on DU. We discuss political issues out in the open. There are rules that help keep discussions under control and the tone at least suitable for public viewing. It is for that reason and others, that the threads that appear here are ranked at the top of Google searches, instead of being ignored by the search engines.
When you create a new thread on DU, you can search for that thread title just minutes after posting it, and it will be at the top of a Google search. For forums that hide their discussions away, Google has contempt, and won't even list those discussions at all. At DU, we reach a larger audience than you would believe. Carefully written thread titles bring hundreds in to see our discussions.
As a DUer, you should be proud of our discussions. We don't have the need to hide them behind locked doors. Even though we often dispute with each other, those disputes are still in the public eye.
Thanks to Skinner and the other admins, and to our staff of moderators, who help prevent the need for us to hide what we have to discuss!
Wow.
The secret's out.

What a :jerkit:

What a :jerkit:
It's really odd this morning, Saturday morning.
In "General Discussion" on Skins's island, campfires lit by the grouchy old primitive and the anti-osteopathic primitive seem to dominate the first page.
We're getting closer and closer to Thanksgiving, when nominations for the Top Primitives of 2010 are opened up, and one wonders if that has something to do with it.
However, the grouchy old primitive and the anti-osteopathic primitive have a lot of catching-up to do, to pull even with other notable primitives of this past year.

What a suckup this guy is. He's constantly posting DUmmie love and Skinner worship threads. He's bucking for God Mod or Admin partner.
From what I gather he styles himself a reformed FReeper with over 20k posts at FR. But, he's seen the healing white light emanating from The Island and it called to his tortured soul to come join in kumbaya.

Umm, if this forum is locked how come I always see tons of Guests (non registered) reading this forum?
-
OET has hidden forums too. So there. And those are referenced as the place where they talk freely about the DU's pizza parties.

Take the knee pads off Monica...you wanker.
You're saying that at a place where the member with the highest post count among you goes by the screen name of (Name Removed).

Really? That sucks. Haven't been there in a while. Used to be the Crisis was public, and the Pizza Party was private. Dang!

There was a huge fight discussing the 9/11 forum that escalated, next thing you know you have to be registered and request to see The 9/11 forum and the Crisis forum. They have a new forum called Thunderdome but nothing is going on there.

Sounds like a very boring place to go :fuelfire:

Yeah, littlelamb, I wandered over there to see what I could see. I was bored out of my skull. The posters' idea of an opening salvo for a thread, is to post a link to an article that someone else had written. A boring article with no original thought. Naturally, this did not inspire interesting posts in reply. Mainly the "K&R!" type of stupid shit.
As for the OP in this particular thread right here, I was embarrassed to read it.
