Title: Apple TV
Post by: Chris_ on September 02, 2010, 07:39:49 PM
To be honest, I've never been a fan of Apple until today.

I heard about the Apple TV and thought it was an amazing deal.  The Apple TV box costs $99.  TV Shows cost .99 cents and HD movies are $3.99.  We pay $56 a month on cable, including internet.  If we bought this Apple TV, our cable costs would decrease.  We would only have to pay $30/mo for internet, unless we can access the internet from the Apple TV as well.  Then we would save that money every month.

I think Apple just released this gadget yesterday.

Has anyone looked into this product and also thought about purchasing?  We are tempted to buy it.

We don't watch a lot of television, so charging $1 for a TV show wouldn't bother us.  We would probably end up spending maybe $20 a month.

As it stands right now, you can watch quite a few shows over the internet for free. You can buy video cards that connect to TVs that would allow you to watch them on the current TV.

With Hulu right?

What kind of video cards can we get for watching TV through our computer now?  We have a laptop.  Can we still connect our laptop to the TV to watch shows?

That would also be an option for us.

Oh. I'm not sure about attaching a laptop to a TV, but desk tops are easy to upgrade. You might check to see what kind of outputs are on the laptop and compare them with inputs on the TV.  Our LCD TV has usb ports, but I have no idea what they are for.

No problemo.

My husband wanted to get a desktop computer just for the television and TV shows.  We just haven't done so yet.  Nor have we really looked at prices.  Slackers.

If your TV has a DVI input, your video card may have a DVI input on it already or you can pick up a VGA-to-DVI converter cable.  If you have the standard red-and-white RCA connectors on the back of the TV, it may be a little more complex.

Jess, we actually bought an Apple TV (hereafter "ATA") for my birthday back in January, and use it constantly. Here's my $0.72:

We originally bought this because we wanted to take advantage of our wireless broadband and the ridiculous amount of movies I have on my MacBook (well over 500 currently stored on an external hard drive). I loved the idea that I could open turn on the ATV, open my MacBook and watch any movie, TV show or video in my iTunes right on our TV. As an added bonus, she and I are HUGE Top Gear fans, and learned that even though BBC America shows episodes, they end up cutting ab good 20 minutes from the show, so for $15, we can watch the entire season, uncut. Same goes for any other show you might be interested in.

Now, without going into too much detail, the way ATV works now out of the box (the new one has yet to be released, I think), you CAN access the internet and YouTube, but Hulu, Fancast, Boxee, etc aren't available. However, me being the greedy prick I am, quickly discovered numerous websties that happily tell you how to "hack" your ATV using it's built-in USB port and a flashstick you can create simply by downloading a program. This "hack" allows you to do everything from streaming Netflix to Hulu (which we do constantly).

I should also mention that we paid $300 for this thing in January, and I now understand that Jobs has cut it back to $99. :-(

Jess, it's a steal, and I say you should definitely go for it.

OMGNOWAY.....WAY????????????????????  How?

On the main ATV menu it gives you a rather lengthy list of TV shows you can either watch on a pay-per-episode basis or subscribe to for an entire season. The old lady and I saw that they had Top Gear, and once we were done hooting and hollering like a couple of rabid Alabama football fans, quickly proceeded to order every season they had available, INCLUDING the three or four Top Gear specials (ie, Winter Olympics, Vietnam and Botswana).

I'm tellin ya, if you've never seen a full, uncut episode of Top Gear, you haven't really seen it at all!  :cheersmate:

Dang.  Dammittoallhell..........

BF has a hard time with anything proprietary.  I don't know if I can sell an ATV, but I might be able to.....

I have all three of those episodes saved, and many more.

I just LOVE Oliver.

Considering Apple TV is being reduced to $99, I'm quite sure you could use your feminine wiles to seduce...er, induce him to see things your way!  :-)

$99?  I could probably manage that.

I'm an Apple boycotter simply for the reason Jobs and his buddy put and end to open source software back in the day. We used to share ideas, improve our programs, and generally share with all the other geeks back then.

Jobs flew off the res and decided everyone needed to get rich. Slowed the flow of ideas for years when everyone thought they were putting in more than their share!

Don't get me wrong, Gates isn't any better, but with IBM clones it opened the market for us poor people to afford the new tech! Besides, there's always been a way around Gates, not so much with the Mighty Apple. Jobs has played it close to the vest from the very beginning and made a lot of lefty lawyers rich off the backs of some real innovators in the field!

Yes, this is the reason I know BF will not be happy.  He shares the same opinion as you, and feels equally as strong about Gates.  He is a Linux/Unix dude through and through.  Such is the path I walk.

What really put me over the top is when Jobs tried to convince everyone Gates stole Windows from him, when in all reality, he stole it from Xerox during the open source years!

We are big Top Gear fans in this house.  Even our 14 month old goes crazy when the theme song starts.

My hubby said we are going to buy the Apple TV in two weeks!  I had no idea it was already out.  It's odd that it was $300 and now only $99.  Maybe it's not selling as well as expected?
