Leading article: The threat to American conservatism
Monday, 30 August 2010

It is always tempting to home in on the absurdity of the Republican right in America, the almost comic quality of some of their views and the ludicrous nature of the accusations they hurl at President Barack Obama.

The paranoid and hate-filled world of the "birthers", the Tea Party people and all the rest is so alien to the British experience as to be incomprehensible. We tend not to take them seriously, or assume that the Republicans' constant lurch to the right inevitably renders them unelectable. We may be making a mistake. The huge size of the rally held in Washington at the weekend – where several hundred thousand people turned up to hear the Fox News talk show host Glenn Beck announce that America was "turning back to God" – provides further disturbing proof, if any were needed, of the growing popularity of the hard right.

And it was that lack of seriousness that got your asses kicked in the first place, boys.

Really?  Over the past 25 years, I've seen a constant LEFTWARD slide in the GOP.  Would you consider Ronald Reagan more liberal than John McCain?  Was Gerald Ford more liberal than Lindsay Graham?  (Uh, memo to lurking Brits and/or DUmmies--that would be, "NO.")  It is in fact that leftward slide of the Republicans that has made them unelectable to many conservatives, or at least forces them to hold their noses while pulling the lever for the lesser of two evils--and make no mistake, in 2008 a lot of us did just that--or stayed home.

Hi,

I see this clown who wrote the article a bit differently.  To me the biggest thing uniting Americans is seeing their government go against the will of the majority of Americans time after time and they are fed up.  This government is "of the people" and those that choose to govern against the will of the majority should get their asses handed to them as they get fired in November and 2012.  Make no mistake about, those senators who do not come up for re-election in 2010 and even 2012 are not as in the clear as they may think they are.

Just another lefty who has no clue.
