Youngest daughter just traveled across country on her was home from college and a summer job. She, of course, stayed in hotels on the way. Somewhere along the way, she thinks it was an itchy night in Minnesota, she picked up bed bugs and brought them with her. We now have a light infestation. I want to get rid of them and have heard it can't be done with home remedies.
Has anyone know anybody who got these in their house and successfully got them exterminated? I'm also hoping I don't have to buy new mattresses, sofa, replace carpet, etc! They seem to only be in one of the twin beds in the former guest room, but I understand they travel and will take over quickly.
I keep telling myself, "Anybody can get these, but you don't have to keep them." Pretty embarrassing.

See if there's anyone in your area that uses the ThermaPure system.
Anyone remember this show from last year?

Hmmm... That sounds like more of a sure-cure than pesticides. I might have to pay quite a bit of travel time, but it would save money in the long run.
Thank you.

Funny, I just googled them the other night because a thread I read on another site was talking about the saying, "don't let the bed bugs bite.". I found this blog of this one girl who was dealing with them. It was funny to read but I am positive it sucked ass. She had a hell of a time getting rid of them.
I don't have any advice but the sooner you get rid of them the better.

My thinking exactly.
My brother sent me information about NY and Cincinnati's recent troubles with these. If you hear of a formerly nice town in Wyoming suddenly battling them, you'll know who started it!
The closest heat exterminator is in California. Most Californians won't even travel to Wyoming. I put a call in to a local exterminator. He travels the region, but will be back in our area tomorrow. There goes Saturday's shopping trip in town.

Bed bugs seem to be in the news a lot lately. I wonder why we're having so many infestations...and crabs too?
I have questions about the sudden rise of pest in public accommodations but the DUmmies would scream racism if I asked those questions.

This is awful, one cannot escape the buggers.
I when I change the sheets on the beds take my Orek steamer and run it full blast on the mattress. I would think a very high temperature hand held hair dryer would also kill them.
In the news in the last month or so I remember a couple of Pricey NY department stores having to close down when bed bugs were found clinging to clothing for sale.
This seems to be a huge problem in London also. A program I watched on fitness took a woman who taught proper eating habits to customers would spend a couple of nights at the clients home and she brought her own sheets, pillows and slept in a sleeping bag on top of the bed.
Back in the 50-60's era when beds had those metal springs and a mattress on top--no box spring-- some people would be driven to using a freaking blow torch to clean the springs every month.
We can blame this on Rachael Carson and Silent Spring, or go back to the pre DDT days, hanging clothing outside in the sun on a line, using Vinegar in the last hot rinse.
And to think I worried for years about bring home roachs on my clothes from the outside.

Ah yes, how well I remember the signs from days of old......
Don't wait for the shrimp boats honey, I am coming home with a case of crabs.
Shipyard heads closed for "fumigation". ( Both male and female btw )
There are a lot of folk who blame illegal immigration for the bedbug outbreak. Me, I am sure those little buggers all have their papers in order. :lmao:

Depends on who you talk to.------Syphilis was thought to have come to the new world by the Europeans, interesting that bones found from 500 years before the Europeans had signs of syphilis infection. Could it be possible that this was a world wide infection for thousands of years ???
We have to find a blame for disease on someone now that we no longer believe that disease is a punishment from God.
Spanish Flu, German Measles, Mexican Trots, Brazilian Fire, Asian flu,
disease is most likely due to outsiders, we seldom if ever give a name to a disease that has any connection to US.
HIV came from Africa we are told, the Bubonic plague from Europe.
We have today rodents in our deserts that carry the plague, how the heck did it get here with a lasp of a couple hundred years from the last deaths in Europe.
Where did Yellow fever, Collera and Thypus come from.?

Good news on the bug front! Contacted our regional bug guy. He did an inspection. We do not have the vermin at all, but we do have gnats and they like biting my daughter.
We don't have AC. Don't need it here, and we sleep with all our windows open. I thought bed bugs were very tiny and maybe we didn't have many. I mean, she was getting bitten at night.
This is one of the times I don't mind being wrong. The treatment to the house would have cost around $500. With having to stay away for 48 hours and trying to clean our clothes well enough, and heat treating everything else, it would have added another 3 to 400 to that. Ugh. I really didn't want to spend money that way, but sure would have.
I grateful to an ethical businessman. He could have sold me the whole package.

Congrats.

A friend of mine had issues with them about 2004. Here in Madison WI there are these leases that go from 8/15-814 because of the college students. I don't really understand why every landlord in Madison has to follow that but many do. But I digress, my friend ended up with bed bugs because about "moving time" lots of old furniture ends up on the curb and some people go scouring it for new items and her roommate did this and brought the bed bugs into their apartment.
I pointed out to my girlfriend how lucky we are to take our vacation over "moving day" and she said, "Yeah we can't go looking for stuff." and I said, "Good for us, we wont be bringing in other people's vermin."

Okay. That just made me purse my lips, squint my left eye, and raise my right eyebrow. It wasn't pretty, and I can't afford to do less pretty.

Aren't bed bugs a form of lice and don't birds carry lice as well as other critters??

Don't know.
I had some fruit in a bowl on the counter and tomatoes sitting by the window to ripen, most of the summer. Have acquired fruit gnats. It was only bananas and apples, but I'm not even buying them now! And I'm keeping a close eye on the tomatoes. They seem to be gone....from the kitchen.
I don't know where those little f's decided to nest, but they are upstairs. NOT downstairs...but up here. They particularly like my computer screen. :banghead: And they are fast!!!
