Defense Secretary Robert Gates, a pillar of President Obama's national security policy, tells Fred Kaplan he'll leave sometime next year, ensuring that the decision about replacing him is shadowed by Obama's reelection campaign.
There's no obvious replacement for Gates, certainly none with the same capacity to silence Republican attacks on the administration's security policy. The most politically logical replacement may be Hillary Clinton.

This is not a surprise, but I'm actually surprised he's stayed on this long. Fellating Lord Zero with the DADT issue and watching Congress decapitate DOD's budget painted him as a Zero yes-man.
I had thought his initial years in office under Bush that he was much more of a no-nonsense, let's get this done sort.
His performance under Zero has removed any measure of respect I had for him.

Have to agree with all that you said, Eupher.

Hillary Clinton?
Time to start my resume...

That's not the first time I've read Hillary's name as a possible replacement for Gates....

And it's scary as hell. Since when have the Clintons gotten a name for being strong on defense?

Compared to Lord Zero, Either Clinton is a right-wing zealot with a lot more political savvy than Zero could possibly imagine.

I wouldn't be surprised if Hillary ran against him in 2012.
Her stint as Sec State will give her the opportunity to claim international policy experience.

She just does Obama ass-kissing by proxy.
