I can't pick just one. Sorry.
Godfathers 1 & 2
Donnie Brasco
A Bronx Tale
Goodfellas ( I put it last on the list because even though I like it a lot, it isn't all that people say it is. At least to me)
There are several honorable mentions of course.
Scarface
Casino
Bugsy
Road to Perdition
Reservoir Dogs
-
Godfather is the ultimate. The Untouchable is another good.
Boondocks saints doesn't quite qualify, but it is my all time favorite movie, so I have to mention it.

The Untouchables was good, but it is lower on my list. I bought Boondock Saints for my hubby after hearing it was a good mafia movie. I was extremely disappointed. Not my kinda movie. My husband liked it though.
I would add Eastern Promises, but it doesn't quite have that same kind of appeal. It was good though.
-
Goodfellas...the sheer volume instantaneous acts of violence in the movie are what make it.
-
Any and all of the Godfather movies
-
My Cousin Vinny
-
The Valachi Papers!!!!!!
And as my honorable mention, ANY of the British gangster movies directed by Guy Ritchie. If Jason Statham  was an American, he'd definitely be mobbed-up.
-
Pulp Fiction

Indeed. I like you. :cheersmate:
Snatch. If I had to pick one.
American Gangster Movie?
Pulp Fiction. Purely for the moments of complete shock seeing it for the first time at the theater with my little brother. Wow. That was some SH!T!

Definitely Snatch!!!! :cheersmate:
As for Pulp Fiction, my girlfriend and I quote that flick at LEAST twice a week! :rotf:

Any and all of the Godfather movies
You include that horrific POS Godfather 3?
-
Anything James Cagney or Edward B. Robinson was in.
there was one other 40's gangster that I cannot remember his name but any and all b&w 40's gangster film. Was it Garfield ???
-

I hate to agree with you, but you're absolutely right, Sparky. That was so depressingly bad...sorta like seeing your dad unable to get himself to the toilet after having worked 30 years as a high steel worker.

Oh yeah!!!! Cagney in "The Public Enemy"!!!!
Are you thinking maybe of Paul Muni or George Raft???
-
Well, aside from the obvious picks of Godfather 2 and Goodfellas, I'm gonna throw in a few others I've liked:
-The Departed
-Donnie Brasco
-Mean Streets
-Carlito's Way
(apologies to all the Edward G. Robinson and Cagney movies like Angels with Dirty Faces or Little Caesar.)
-
Goodfellas
then:
Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels/Snatch/RocknRolla trifecta
Reservoir Dogs and True Romance (the Dennis Hopper & Christopher Walken scene is unforgettable!!!)
Usual Suspects
Eastern Promises
-
As far as I'm concerned, Pacino never made a bad flick. Just watching how his Cuban accent gradually disappeared through Scarface, and knowing that they shot the thing out of sequence, wow. Simply wow.
Carlito's Way is up there. Way up there. And while Sean Penn is a ****face par excellence, he played a great douchebag lawyer in that film.

Was it not Pachino who stared in an early 80's movie called CRUSING.?
Sad movie he played a young married man, police detective who was assigned to stop the Gay action in town. His charactor knew very little about Gay life and as he delved into it, the bars and bath houses he found he now for the first time in his life question his own sexuality.
-
My Cousin Vinny
That is one hilarious movie!
-
Pulp Fiction
I knew I'd forget one. Although when I first watched it, I hated it. After watching it for the 3rd time, I realized how awesome it was. Now I've seen it far too many times.

Did anyone ever understand a word Brad Pitt said in Snatch???
-
Godfather I and II
Goodfellas
Mean Streets
Resevoir Dogs
The Usual Suspects
The Long Good Friday (with Hellen Mirren back when she was super yummy)
-
I liked "Public Enemies" with Christain Bale and I also liked all of the rest listed before except I have yet to see any of the Godfather movies.
-
Did anyone ever understand a word Brad Pitt said in Snatch???
Nope, and I loved him for that! Not like in that girly crushy way, it was just super cool.

"girly crushy way"?!?
Sounds like a disease or the start of one helluva sinus infection.

Oh hell, I mean, not in that way that I think he is attractive, because, quite frankly I don't. But between Fight Club, and Snatch, I decided he was pretty darn cool.

Oops, I forgot my smiley.

I HATE PIKEYS!!! :-)
Probably about as much as they understood what he was saying in True Romance as Floyd the stoner.

I don't necessarily want to pick nits...but I will. Some fine movies were mentioned, but I don't think of them as "Mafia" movies. Specifically the Tarantino ones. Gangster movies yes, but not mafia.

Yeah, Scarface was definitely a gangster movie. Another film noir example of a gangster flick, The Purple Gang. And Little Caesar and who can forget some of Richard Widmark's really evil characters like Tommy Udo in Kiss of Death?

Gangster is probably a better choice of wording. They blend together for me movie-wise.

To me, GF 3 was utterly pointless. While in Little Italy in NYC (right after I met and hung with Uncle Jr. during the time of Sopranos when he shot Tony---awesome, just sayin'), I was buying some prints for my husband. I bought Frank Sinatra's mugshot, some scenes from Scarface and Godfathers 1 & 2, plus a really nice shot of the skyline with the WTC, anyway... this random Italian guy and I were talking about the point of Godfather 3. He did have some interesting points, but still for me, it almost ruined the series for me. It was stupid and pointless IMO. They should've left it with just the 2 or at least came up with some better crap than what they did.
And let me add, that Uncle Jr. was the nicest guy on the planet. I made the NY trip with my mom, aunt, and grandma (we ALL watched Sopranos), but I texted my husband while we were eating at this restaurant that I was sitting right next to Uncle Jr. This was in the prime of Sopranos and he was JEALOUS!!! I loved it. I've meta few celebs, but he's been my favorite thus far. Nice guy. Really nice guy.

Road to Perdition was pretty damn good.
However...
Once apon a time in America. I mean seriously? Sergio Leone directing James Woods, De Niro, Pesci, Danny Aiello, Burt Young AND you got to see Elizabeth McGovern nekkid!

YES!! I think I will have a new show to watch!
-
I'd give Prizzi's Honor, Analyze This, and Suicide Kings honorable mentions. Loved Bugsy (on your honorable list), Soleil.
The Untouchables always gets me to watch it. So does Mad Dog Time--one weird flick.
------------------
Still in pre-production, but The Obama Administration might make the list.

Que es Buffyspeak?

Que es Buffyspeak?
Oh--well then it's not. "Buffyspeak" is the way a lot of the dialogue was written in the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" series.
It gets defined at one of my favorite sites, tvtropes.org:
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BuffySpeak
"One of the most obvious elements is a lack of relevant vocabulary, leading to both unconventional adjectival-noun structures like "shooty-gun thing", and incomplete, floundering similes that turn back on themselves in frustration: "That idea went over like... like... like a thing that doesn't go over very well."
"Buffy: All of the Hellmouth's energy is trying to escape from that one little spot, and it's getting all...
Principal Wood: Focus-ey.
Buffy: Careful! Starting to speak like me now."
-
Well alrighty then. Buffy speak it is. Never watched the show. But, I guess that fits the vernacular.

Oh man, i completely forgot about OUATIA. The extended uncut version was better.
And the Ennio Morricone score was superb.
And don't forget a teenage Jennifer Connelly was in it too.
Very underappreciated flick when it came out in 1984 but now has grown to be highly regarded.

I've never seen the original cut. When I bought it ages ago I got the extended cut.

I'm reading and got to this and have to give it a huge +1. Some excellent gang type movies listed but they're not really Mafia movies.
-
Mafia:
Midnight Run, Get Shorty
-----------------------
Gangster:
DOA, White Heat, The Harder They Fall, The Sting, Jackie Brown
-
I prefer Godfather I over Godfather II--which probably puts me in the minority. The words "mafia" or "cosa nostra" are never mentioned in the first Godfather movie.
I didn't see anyone mention my other favorite, A Bronx Tale.
-
Goodfellas.
I only saw a bit of The Godfather, and what I saw bored me. Sorry
Once Upon a Time in America was good too, although the version you usually see on TV has been edited to death. It's a long movie (almost 4 hours) but seeing the original on DVD is well worth it.
-
Road to Perdition was pretty damn good.
Road to Perdition had the potential of being one of the all time greats, but it was ruined by the casting of the boy. He must have gotten the job through nepotism. Even worse casting than Sophia Coppola in Godfather 3. But it did have one of the greatest death scenes in all of movie history, when Tom Hanks takes down Paul Neuman's bodyguards, and then Paul. The silent slow motion of the goons being cut down, and the flash of the Thompson in the inky black street.. just awesome.
But back to the original topic, the best mafia movie: Of course, Godfathers 1 and 2. Nothing before them even comes close, and everything after them is influenced by them.

You need to sit down and spend some quality time with the Godfather DVDs. It's like someone who has never watched the Simpsons... too many pop cultural references are blowing right over your head for having not seen it.

Probably right. I was channel surfing when I came across it. It seems like the kind of movie you have to get settled in for.
