Indian River County woman finds sleeping pills in ground beef purchased at Walmart

Arlene Kahn was breaking apart clumps of commercially produced ground beef when she found two medical pills inside, she said.

The two 25 mg blue pills have since been identified as a sleep aid.

On Thursday, police spokesman Officer Steve Marcinik, said Walmart officials are calling on their packaged ground meat supplier in Georgia to look into the matter.

Kahn found the pills in an uncooked portion of the meat she was preparing to freeze. She didn’t see any in the meat she cooked, but she threw that out.

Yuck.  I stopped buying "fresh" beef at WalMart... it just doesn't cook or taste right.  Reminds me of embalming fluid.

I don't want to come off as one of those picky-super-uber-overcritical-people.   But, I am a bit more careful about the meat I buy these days.  And, there are some places I just won't buy meat.  Walmart is one of them.

Nah, that's just the WallyWorld beef you smell.  And yeah, I made the mistake of getting a couple of "steaks" from there once.  I'm really torn--I can't bring myself to throw them away, yet I know no matter what I do with them, they're going to be pretty much inedible.

Even their "quality" cuts of meat are only good for stew and soup.

Why were the pills sleeping in meat?

I think they were there in order to keep the meat from barkin' or hee hawin' in the store!

Someone here mentioned that WalMart injects their steaks with some kind of brine to preserve them, and that's exactly how they cook.  Good luck getting a sear or a crust on one because it's got so much water content.  Might as well boil it instead.

The steaks I've had (I usually stick with ribeye) tasted sour or rancid.

Bingo. I get my beef and pork from a local slaughterhouse. Danny is a straight arrow and he does a great job.

I spent money on some grass-fed beef from Publix the other day... fancy packaging and a price tag to match.  What a letdown.  I (over)grilled the NY strip to about medium but it didn't taste any different from other cheap pieces of beef I've had.  The only thing I can say is maybe the texture was a little grittier.  Oxtail has a nicer flavor than this stuff and I can get oxtail for $4 a pound at Kroger (try it next time you want something like beef tips or stew).

I bought some lamb shoulder chops at Publix too.  They were better than the beef at about half the price.

I have not bought fresh meat at WalMart since they fired the meatcutters and went with all pre-packed meat over ten years ago...

I did pick up a box of frozen burger patties for a cook out. They were priced great and very good. I was pretty impressed.

I haven't had cod in years.  I'll stick with pan-fried tilapia when I can't get catfish.

Cod, Halibut, or Red Snapper when I can't find fresh Lobster or Prawns. I don't eat very much "fresh" water fish. Hell, I don't eat much fish period! My freezer is full of steak!

Oh hell, is that all it is? I catch them all the time out here! I bring 'em home to my MIL, she makes somethin' real similar to tun fish in the can with em. I've got 8 quarts in the root cellar!

I still prefer tuna, but her's is a real close second!

I've been thinking about this again, and the more I ponder it, the more I'm convinced this chick was trying to hit the litigation lottery and faked the pills.

Think about it--this meat was GROUND UP and yet she still found whole pills in there that she managed to pull out intact?  Think about it, kids--even if someone at the factory/butcher put that in there and covered it up, how long has it been since that meat was processed, frozen, and thawed again?  Can ANY pill hold up under that kind of moisture for that kind of time?

I think you are spot on.  Have you ever seen the way they process ground meat?  No way.
