So, I've been 'seriously' job-searching for about 2 weeks now....   Updated at 1:37 PM

I say it in quotes because I wonder how willing I am to jump through these hoops to actually GET said job.
Like, I really don't think I'd relocate my family to another city where I have no support system or relatives nearby to help with my kids, just for a job that may not last 6 months or more. Because so many of these employers are laying off and going unde as we continue to 'downturn'.

But, like a good prole, I am submitting to everything I think i may be qualified for, even if it is in sac or reno- most of them at least generate a rejection slip within a week anyway, or just ignore me.
And then there's the AUTOMATED APPLICATION...where you can't even really upload a resume, you have to check off all these asinine questions, and sometimes they time out in the middle for no reason. funfunfun.

Here's my big question: I know these corporations like to think they own us, but it is really necessary to allow them to run credit checks and background checks as well as offer bodily fluids to even be CONSIDERED for the job?
It galls me.
I guess I am shooting myself in the foot and will always end up at Mom & Pop companies, because I just can't bring myself to do it.
Not because I am hiding anything, 'cept maybe my medical MJ, which isn't protected anyway... but JUST on a matter of principal.

Does anyone get what I mean?

I am shocked no one will hire you with that great attitude of yours.  :whatever:

You know what DUmmy do what the rest of us are doing during these tough times suck it up and find a damn job even if it is beneath you. Put down the bong, get a haircut, shave your face and do something productive.

2. I get what you mean and I agree that it's come to an unreasonable

invasion of privacy, but its so very widespread and has been for many years (although it's gotten worse) you or I can't change it. Especially in a down economy when there are plenty of people who are willing to subject themselves to almost anything to just get a job.

The only way I ver see things changeing in out favor is when the economy booms again and it becomes a labor market instead of the current corporate one.

You know why companies do drug tests?
Not just to weed out dopeheads (pun intended)
but, the govt requires businesses to carry insurance and insurance companies want drug free people on the job.
For some reason they seem to think if you are all doped up you might cause an accident or something.

6. Let me know how you feel after 2 years of searching. Around here

it has become entirely ridiculous. Craigslist consistently has pages of bogus "sales" jobs, even the "legit" employment sites are full of nothing but scams and National Guard. For the few jobs that seem real, I've seen Controllers being wanted for a mere $8.50 an hour, I see regularly what you're seeing regarding all these tests of many kinds (like drug, credit score, etc.), but also seeing demands for proof of current employment (wtf, with so many out of work why demand someone be currently employed?) and up front references. I don't mean they want them to be available at first interview, I mean that they want them with the resume. From craigslist? I could just imagine how pissed my references would be if they got caught in a scam because I gave unknown company their contact information before I even confirmed there was a real company or a real job.

Employers are sure turning into the same kind of beasts that those college students did in the guard/prisoner experiment years back. They feel they have the power, and they're going to use it to kick and humiliate and whatever else adds to their power trip.

Um you do realize the ads at craigslist asking for a credit report are scams right?

I also wonder how they get the money to buy dope anyway.
They must get unemployment benniefits and I say if you get a check from the govt you should be drug tested too. I have to be tested to earn my paycheck so why shouldn't they?

Translation: I'm gonna smoke dope and ride the unemployment gravy train as long as I can.

George Thurgood is okay, but I prefer something a little more modern...

Want a job, you're going to have to deal with the bullshit. I don't like the thought of people getting my credit or medical records either. But guess what? Supporting myself is more important than that. If it means my possible future boss knows I was dumb with money between the ages of 19 and 22, thems the breaks. I give them permission and hope they still give me a chance. And if they don't, for that reason, it's my fault for not being more responsible.

Why wouldn't a Corporation run a drug and credit check? if they have 2 applicants, 1 passes a drug and credit check and the 2nd 1 doesn't, who the heck wouldn't hire candidate 1 as opposed to hiring candidate 2?

Believe it or not, DUmmies, scanning software works at finding the keywords companies are looking for, and at weeding out the people who are genuinely interested in a job as opposed to people who are filling out their five applications a week to obtain their unemployment check.  Cover letters--ever hear of them?  A good one stands out even more in some cases than a good resume.  And speaking of resumes, tailor your education and experience to the company--you're there to fit THEIR needs, not the other way around.  And that huge gap with no job, no education, no obtaining recent qualifications--you know what that says to a prospective employer?  Something about being a lazy POS who's just going to come in and punch a clock and get a paycheck every week, and that's about it?  You think anyone is going to give you a second glance when you come across like that?

What a typical DUmmie!!! :mental:
Medical MJ, huh?!?!? And do you think that the medical MJ is actually making you better?!? :bird: Like someone stated earlier, shave your beard, cut your hair and get off the drugs you piece of garbage. OR,...you can just rely on that imposter in the White House for your unemployment checks. BUT,....didn't your hero, the Lord Zero, pass a "stimuls" bill that would help unemployment stay below a certian percentage and help "kick start" the economy?!?! YOU FOOLS!! You wanted him, you got him! :bird: :censored:

Personally, I hope you starve - then when your (Imaginary) CHILDREN begin to starve, they eat your raisinette sized testicles.

Medical marijuana, my ass.  He buys it in plastic baggies like everybody else.

If this guy wants to smoke dope and hold down a job, good luck.  They're always hiring waiters.

Welcome to my world.  Put on your big girl panties and deal with it.  It's not that bad.  I think our daughter is turning out normal without having family around 24/7.  Consider it a good thing.  Be a productive member of society.

Hey DUmmie,

I saw Thurgood at the gorge in George, WA back in `96 after that single was released. First time I ever saw someone play rhythm AND lead guitar at the same time! I was never a real big Thurgood fan until that concert. Thurgood was fracking awesome!

Yes, all those people on "funemployment" are going to have a rough time explaining 2 years of resume gap.  Nothing?  Not even a tide-me-over job?  Says everything about you they need to know.

Now, I'm being hard-assed about this because I see Help Wanted signs about town wherever I go, and this is not exactly a boomtown.  Plus, one can always go into some sort of business for themselves.

Totally true, NHSparky.  But tailoring your resume to fit a company/industry & writing distinct & targeted cover letters?  That's WAY too much work for a DUmmy.

Outside of dealing drugs and making asinine blog posts, what else could a DUmmie do?

I hear the local medical research college is looking for test subjects (aka human "lab rats").

DUmmies should do great at that,
They breed faster that lab rats.
They are more plentiful.
And there are just some things a lab rat won't do.

I don't get the complaint......as a landlord, we run background checks and credit checks on every potential tenant........it's good business........we don't want deadbeats, felons, druggies, and other assorted trash in our rental property either......why wouldn't an employer want to do the same?

Anything worse than traffic tickets in your history, you don't get a lease........simple......we would rather have an empty unit, than have to chase some deadbeat for the rent check every month, or go to court for evicting them for nonpayment, after they trash the place....

All lessons learned the hard way......

Another Illinois quagmire...

Hiring blind (http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2010-08-10/news/ct-edit-credit-20100810_1_credit-checks-job-seekers-bad-credit)

As if there weren't enough reasons for employers to avoid hiring in Illinois, Gov. Pat Quinn on Tuesday provided another.

Quinn signed a bill making it illegal for them to use credit histories to evaluate job seekers.

Do companies need this information? That doesn't matter now. The governor and legislators have substituted their judgment for the judgment of the companies that actually put people to work in this state.

Good thing it's a FEDERAL requirement to do background checks to work in certain industries.  Wouldn't that SUCK if some a-hole tripped Byron, or Clinton, Dresden, or Quad Cities nuke plants because he had a bug up his ass?
