If the election results, here in my county are any indication...the Republicans may just be on a roll to get rid of incumbent Democrats.
There were 11 County Commissioner seats up. Of the 4 Democrats running, the only one that won, was unopposed.
RB and I gave a "meet and greet" for our incumbent 2 weeks ago. He's a Democrat, but has been doing a good job, was fair, and tended to vote against the Democrats more than with him, this past term was his first political endeavor. He had some extremely strong support from some well-known Republicans. Many people had signs in their yards for Republican Governor and County Mayor, and our Dem commissioner. He's a retired banker, who ran for commissioner after retiring and easily won. He's been on community boards for years, and is very well known in his district. He's only the 2nd Democrat I have voted for in the almost 40 years I have been eligible to vote, if that's an indication how I felt about him being qualified.
Not tonight.
His Republican opponet won by 350 votes...probably the only people who actually knew him.
This was his entire platform....
" “It is time for the Republican in the Knox County Republican party to support the Republican candidates in the County and not the Democrats that run against our Republicans. It is sad that our former Mayor Victor Ashe is supporting Finbarr Saunders instead of the Republican (me). There are also prominate business owners... (Republicans) supporting him also. Well when I win I will thank the real Republicans that helped me.â€
He's 43, has a HS diploma, took courses at the community college for a couple of years, and is a tech supervisor for Comcast. The only "personal" thing he mentioned in his bio, was that he doesn't drink but has a collection of over 200 shot glasses. No community, church or kids' school involvement.
While there is absolutely nothing wrong with the man, and he's probably a really nice guy....he's now going to be a county commissioner....you know, those guys who determine everything that happens in the county. They oversee the county school superintendent (we have a consolidated school system), the metropolitan planning commission, the BZA board - building and zoning, they are the ones who spend alllll the taxes paid into the county.
His only experience and qualification to be a county commissioner is that he's a Republican.
The Democrats better look out, could be they are going to get tarred and feathered and run out of office....all over the country. :evillaugh:

How far do you think McWherter's daddy's coattails will take him? :-)
I really want to see Jim Cooper out. Nobody has been able to beat him in a general election.

Not far enough!!
I'm hoping Bill Haslam gets it.
I've only met him a couple of times over the years, but I know his brother and his wife, and his sister. I went to church for years with the brother's family, we had kids in the same Sunday school classes, and sat in front of them at church...the two back pews because both of our families were always late. :uhsure: Brother's wife and his sister and I were all in Junior League together, often on the same committees. His wife was in too, but I only knew her to say hi to, as she was coming in as I was getting out. His stepmother and I were on the City Ballet board of directors together for years.
I've watched what he has done for years. He left Pilot, and went to Proffitt's for several years, for the experience and to step out from the shadows of his dad and older brother, who is now CEO of Pilot. He's done a good job as mayor, and has worked well with the county mayor. A vast improvement over his predecessor. If he gets the governorship, I would not be surprised to see him eventually run for US Senator, or even president.
One real good thing...he has enough money of his own for several lifetimes...no one will be able to "buy" him.

Somewhat off topic but, a politician called Finbarr Saunders would have a pretty tough time here in Britain. :-)

Past couple of nights I've walked by the living room and overheard Stephen Colbert push the election of another of Tennessee's finest politicians - Basil Marceaux - who is apparently running for the Republican nomination for governor.
Apparently Basil is for real, but he speaks like a dithering idiot which is the result of having only 3 teeth in his mouth. :lmao:
Colbert's been all over this guy, touting him as the greatest thing that's happened to Tennessee since Jack Daniels'.

Yeah, first time I saw him was earlier this week. He's been quite popular with the Liberal media. He received something like a half of one percent of the votes.
He's from over near where Chris lives.. :fuelfire:..the guy that won for the GOP is from here.

I have to wonder who is behind Marceaux's campaign.
-
I think the guy has been a lifelong aficionado of Jack Daniel's products. :drunksailor:

Ya think? Either that or he's just flat out crazy. :-)
Who knows....maybe it's all a stunt...for someone.

I'd say he is one who is after his 15 minutes of glory, but hell, a half hour's gone by and he's still yammering away. :rotf:

This was not his first run at governor.
Just the first time he got all the publicity. Did you notice in the wiki article all the shows...the "liberal" shows... he's been on?
-
Yeah, I did - except that Colbert doesn't call himself a liberal.
Anybody who puts him on deserves a laugh. He's about as qualified to be governor as Arnold Schwarzen.....oh, wait.
-
Marceaux was on the morning talk show I listen to on my way to work.
I changed the station, it was so painful.
-
I didn't even know about the guy until the other day and saw he had done an interview with Red State Update.
He's a character all right. He would give Alvin Green a run for his money.

But then again, Alvin Greene WON his primary.
