There's quite a bit of criticism of Mrs. Obama's trip to Spain.
30 rooms at a high end luxury hotel. The same number of cars in the motorcade to get her from the airport to the hotel.
To the critics: get over yourselves. Its the law. She has to be protected. She's paying for her room, meals, shopping, etc.

I am certain that the foul smelling jester would feel the same way if Laura Bush had done this.
:lmao:
You know what her carbon footprint is huge. Think of all the emissions that will be required for this. And these are the same people who want to regulate how cool or warm our houses are. :banghead:

1. i think some of the criticism is warranted...
given the economic conditions. she may be paying for her room, but at what cost to the taxpayers is the rest of the trip? fairly recently President Obama criticized executives of companies for spending money on junkets to various sites when they were strapped for cash. the US is operating on a huge deficit...millions of dollars in spending for a european vacation right now doesn't look good.

Ouch lousy freeper troll. :lmao:

4. You know as well as I that it doesn't matter when a republican
does it. Funny how the idiots on the right wing learn for the first time that republican presidents were doing something simply because they complain when a democratic president does the same thing. So many things were never an issue until a democrat does it.
Oh after the crap you guys spewed about Bush I think its fair to blast the Obamas.

My only criticism would be that she came back.

30 rooms at a high end luxury hotel.
Funny .... every report I see says she has 60-70 rooms rented. Since she has 40 of her 'closest friends' .... 30 rooms make no sense. Could DUmbass be lying?
KC
-
How do we know she's paying for 30 rooms and all the meals, shopping etc.
I would think she's paying for the shopping, as that's a personal expense.
Know darn well she isn't paying for all the secret service personnel (salary), the flight to get all her secret serrvice over there, or the 30 cars she seems to "require".
At most she might be paying for her and her daughter's room, meals and shopping.
Everything else....we the taxpayers are paying....
-
And people wonder why 70,000 Scouts booed her husband last week when they showed his little video at the Jamboree.

Is it just me or has the Fetid Harlequin been lashing out more blindly, bitterly and at random the past few weeks? It smacks of desperation born of loss - seeing all one's hopes and dreams of liberal utopia disintegrating like wisps of smoke.
In fact, the whole tone of DU has been that way. They've been reduced to a sporadic and weak raising of their weary heads and whimpering out, "Racist!" now and then like the last gasps of a dying man. Just a bunch of random sniping and grasping at straws is all that's left. Even the bouncies are few and far between and no one in them is being converted. They're standing smack in the middle of the tracks as the great engine of November is bearing down on them, and they're scared shitless with no one to turn to.
The image that keeps coming to mind is the quintessential Old Rummy At The Bar. Same seat every night, away from everyone else. Staring down dejectedly at his drink, ruminating over good times past. Silent and unmoving except for an occasional drunken wobble and to raise his glass to his lips. Every now and then he'll catch a word or snatch of conversation from the revellers around him that sparks a thought, and he'll lift his head long enough to rant out a rambling sentence or two about how great things used to be for him or how the world is going to hell in a handbasket. Then after a moment of surprised silence from the other patrons he again hangs his head and he is once more ignored as the conversations around him start anew.
It is thus with the DUmmies. The heady days with a clearly defined enemy are behind them, the war protestors have returned to their basements, their demigods in government have betrayed them, DU has been decimated by a dozen purges and is now overrun by DLCers and moles, and Cindy Sheehan has become the answer to a trivia question. There is only one way out of this hell, DUmmies.
Cut well, and deeply.

Okay, refresh my memory...when did a Republican FIRST LADY do this? This isn't a trip by the president. This is his wife and daughter along with 30 or 40 of their closest friends. Heck, I don't even remember a Republican president taking a lavish vacation like this. What the hell has Michelle Antoinette done to EARN such a vacation partially funded by the American taxpayer, most of whom can barely afford to spend a week at a state campground.

Ah no, since she had a 'diplomatic' meeting with the Spain head of state, her entire trip including hotel, air fare, cars, meals were ALL funded by the taxpayer. You can damn well be sure she has a 'diplomatic' expense account including a clothing (shopping) 'allowance' too.
-
It's a big bonfire, there's lots of twisting and spinning and squabbling. Lots of stupid posts along the lines of "so she should just stay in a Motel 8 off the interstate?" As if there's no middle ground or moderation.
-
To the critics: get over yourselves. Its the law. She has to be protected. She's paying for her room, meals, shopping, etc.
The airfare alone cost taxpayers $148,000.
As the NY Daily News said...she is a modern day Marie Antionette.
While the rest of the country is being told by her hubby that we have to cut back...watch our budgets and 'sacrifice"...she's out lavishing herself with a Spanish vacation that is costing those of us paying taxes a LOT of $$$$
Mmmmmmm...that cake is tasty!
-
The wife turned on the TV just before she left for work. CBS was doing it's best to be critical of Mrs. Obama but at the same time smooth things over for her....then I flipped past ABC or NBC and damned if they weren't doing the same song and dance.
I'm now watching some 1950's sci-fi movie....it's more believeable...and interesting.

OFF WITH HER HEAD!!!!!

Even Fox this morning, was reporting that the WH had said the additional "friends and family" paid for their travel and lodging expenses. ....then they added that the rooms were $400 to $6000 a night...with a bit of an exclamation point at the end. Then they added, that because Michelle was visiting the King and Queen of Spain, this is considered a trip(can't remember the exact word) that qualifies for tax payer paid rather than personal.
Yeah...I want to see those checks floating in from the friends and fam that proves they are personally paying for themselves.
I am curious, though...why pick Spain with their economy almost as bad as Greece? Was it the only place the WH could find to charge off the trip expense to the taxpayer's? The only heads of state that wanted to see Michelle? Spain needs more US dollars spent there, than we do here IN the US?
Personally, I don't care where Michelle takes her daughter on a trip....I do care though, how much tax payer monies are required to PAY for the trip, particularly with the US economy as it is. There are many beautiful places here in the US, that I'm sure they could have gone to, that also need the economic benefits of a huge presidential-type entourage especially one that includes 30 extra "guests". Staying here in the US would have been considerably less expensive than traipsing off to Spain.
I'm thinking that "Marie Antoinette" is rapidly becoming a very appropriate name for Miz Obama.

I am certain when Ms. Bummer goes to a foreign hotel, they shut down the whole floor! We pay for it, even if they remain vacant! She's pullin' a fast one! Her explanation will be, "Hey, the rooms were empty, so I'm actually "saving" the American foreign policy by spending our dollars in Spain!".
I'm sure we're going to see all that "transparency" Zero promised us, so we can see for ourselves what she spent on the taxpayers dime! Yeah, right! Bull ****in' shit!
What utter BS!

The cost of accommodating the secret service team runs at around £172 each a day which amounts to nearly £60,000 for the length of the summer break.
Use of Air Force Two, the Air Force version of a 757, comes in at £91,900 for the round trip. This does not include time on the ground.
The American public will also cover the cost of the only official part of the holiday, a visit to the Spanish royal family on the island of Majorca.
A conservative estimate puts the total amount at around £150,000.
Back in the U.S., anger was mounting - especially as it has emerged the First Lady will have enjoyed eight holidays by the end of the summer.
<snip>
Mrs Obama arrived by plane at Malaga airport yesterday/on Wednesday morning and was driven in a 14-car convoy to the five star Hotel Villa Padierna, where her entourage has reserved 60 of the 129 rooms.
She told owner Ricardo Arranz she had come to 'relax and unwind'.

As I recall there was quite an uproar over Nancy Reagans wardrobe a long time ago and wasn`t the left all beside themselves over the RNC (a private organization) spending money on Sara Palins attire.
Go fuk yourselves DUmbasses.
-
I've been to Majorca (Mallorca). It's a very nice island that's used by many Europeans as a vacation spot. I don't believe for a NY Minute that her "friends" are paying a single dime for their trip, other than their rooms and food. Then, what's being forgotten is the maintenance man hours required to maintain the 757. That ain't cheap, either.

How many of their "friends" can afford rooms that are $400 to $6000 A NIGHT?! Or are willing to spend that kind of money on a hotel room?
We have several friends that are multi-millionaires, and several who have since died....and everyone of those men are/were too damn tight to ever spend that kind of money on a hotel room. Their wives/girlfriends might talk them into rooms that are $500 or 600 for a night or two, for something special, but I doubt much more than that. They all worked too damn hard for too many years to have the money they do, they aren't going to spend it on ridiculously priced hotel rooms. If you met any of them, you would have no clue they have/had that kind of money. Not a single Liberal Democrat in the group, either...

This story is apparently gaining traction. It really is ridiculous. I wonder if the Obamas even know?

From the same article that Carl quoted...
The Obamas have also been showered with gifts, including a typical Spanish fan, a traditional veil known as a mantilla, books on the cities they have visited, and a copious assortment of local food including cheese, olives, wine and even two legs of salt-cured Spanish ham. It is questionable whether the ham will clear U.S. customs because the producers lack permission to export to the United States, media reports said.
We commoners would be allowed to bring back the olives in a sealed jar, and the wine unopened, never the cheese or the ham.
I bet it all comes back on AF Two. ::)

Why Michelle went to Spain.
Mrs. Obama met two friends in Spain, who flew there on their own. The three women were joined by a total of four daughters. (Some news outlets reported Mrs. Obama was on vacation with 40 friends; that was not true.)
One of the women is a longtime Obama friend, Anita Blanchard, an obstetrician who delivered Sasha and big sister Malia, 12. Her husband is Marty Nesbitt, a close Obama friend and treasurer of Obama’s presidential campaign fund.

7. ya know alot of people in this country are..that is the real world..when people are suffering!!
real world..not on a damn board..real world people have lost jobs..and can't feed their kids ..real world people can't make the car payment..real world people are losing their fecking homes if they haven't already.
And many that are losing are democrats!
My sister's boss hasn't made payroll in 3 weeks..ya know what that means? it means my democratic sister hasn't gotten a paycheck in 3 weeks..single mom..can't pay her bills now and is delinquent on her bills now..like her mortgage..wake the **** up!
And I will tell you when my sister was at my house this weekend ..because she had no food and needed to come to my home to eat and feed her daughter..she was incensed that the First Lady was in Spain..My sister wouldn't stop talking about it with unrational.. you might say..anger!
My sister can;t quit or turn in her employer , because she has one kidney and needs the health insurance and there are no other damn jobs around!..anywhere!
The compassion with people here anymore makes me ill!
Oh and my brother feels the same ..he went into the hospital today for his third round of Chemo and he still hasn't gotten disability..his employer is trying to keep him from getting disability...he worked for a school...he has a 16 yr old , and he can't work because he has cancer, he was diagnosed with in June! The two of my siblings were at my home over the wekeend and all they talked about was how this country has gone to hell in a handbasket for the American people..and yet the power folks can take vaccation after vacation, wen the working Joe can't even feed their families!
wake the **** up!

It's their arrogance for the American people. They don't give a damn about the American people. I just had this explained to me recently. The woman doing the explaining was born in America, but her parents weren't, though they became American citizens, she is around my age. Can't remember which country her parents came to the US from, but she was specific in not being referred to as a Latina, which apparently is an insult...at least to her.
Hispanics are those who are decended from Spain(ish) ancestry.
Latinos are from Latin America, and Mexicans are lumped into this group.
Cubans are in a class all of their own...they are Cuban or Cubano/Cubana. (I had Spanish profs in college that escaped Castro and Cuba, those that did, apparently will always be "Cuban".)
Near as I can figure out, if the family went to the Caribbean from Spain...that makes one a Hispanic. If they went on over to Mexico, they are then Mexican or Latino.
I'm still confused.

Latin? I thought that was an early Roman language. Not to be confused, of course, with Italian which is spoken in Italy where in is located Rome. Um, how did it become Latin America, did the Italians invade it?? Yikes what a bag of worms. :mental:
I noted just a tad of racism in Puerto Rico, those with strong Castilian heritage were generally lighter than those with more native influence.

This is how it was explained to me by my Cuban friend, who fled the island in 1980.......
Spaniards are Caucasians, and most of them (unless they have some Moor in their ancestry) are as white as white Americans, brown hair, and predominantly green eyes. Cubans are also Spaniards, as most of them are direct descendants of immigrant families from Spain when Cuba was a Spanish colony. Cubans also speak castillian Spanish, which is essentially the same language spoken in Spain with minor colloquial variations.
Mexicans and Central Americans are a mixture of Spanish and local Indians that were present when the conquistadors conquered the area, and are ALL of mixed race. Spaniards and Cubans consider them Latino, and they are generally looked down upon (by those of direct Spanish descent) as "mongrels". The Spanish spoken in Mexico and Central America is a blend of castillian Spanish and local indigenous languages, and some of it is not even comprehensible to a castillian Spanish speaker.
There is a third category, which are peoples that are of Spanish descent, mixed with Caribbean blacks and indigenous Island people, that were brought to the islands during slave times.....some of these also migrated to Central America, Puerto Rico, and what is now the Dominican Republic, and are sometimes referred to as "mephista", or other designations, but are also lumped in with Latinos.
According to him, the phrase "hispanic" is essentially a made-up, "politically correct" term that was invented here in the US, and has no meaning to people of Spanish descent, where ever they might come from.
His explanation, not mine, but at least historically, it tends to make sense........

The "Castilian" are the Spainards....and do not have "Mestizo" or Indian (like Aztec, Mayan, Incan) blood mixed in with the original Spanish.
French, Spanish and Italian are considered the "Romance Languages", based in Latin. I took 3 years of French in HS and 2 of Spanish in college. I have been to Italy 2x's and could sort of understand what was being said to me, especially by the end of my trips, if they talked slowly. In all three, the sentence structures are quite similar and nouns are either feminine or masculine.
(see, occasionally those Liberal Arts degrees are useful.... :lmao:)

Heh, I went to Spain twice, and I could sort of understand what was being said to me, and I could sort of communicate back. But that was because I was an Asst Mgr in a Pizza Place in Texas for several years. :rotf:

The word "hispanic" appeared during the Carter administration.
