Controversial 'Ground Zero Mosque' Gets Green Light From NYC Landmarks Commission
ABC News

The controversial Islamic center proposed to be built near the site of the 9/11 terrorist attacks won a major victory today when a New York City board voted unanimously to allow the demolition of a building to make way for construction.

The city's Landmarks Preservation Commission's vote rejected the landmarking of a 19th century building with its Italian Renaissance Palazzo style that most recently served as a Burlington Coat Factory. That designation would have prevented its demolition and foiled plans to build a 13-story Islamic community center that includes a prayer room.

The vote was the last municipal approval needed to start development on the site. Developer Shanif al-Gamal declined to give a date for construction to start, but said they still have $100 million to raise.

The war of Northern Aggression is supposed to have settled the whole "State's secession" issue.  What about voting states off the island, so to speak? I've got a seam ripper, I can start pulling stars off the flag today.

What the hell is wrong with the people in NYC?

Did they forget 9/11?

May the souls of those lost on 9/11 haunt that "community center"....

Believe it or not, New York at the time just confined to Manhattan wanted to secede during the Civil War. The reason was the economy was dependent on the slave trade.

I have not forgotten it and never will.

I'm just upset because it seems as though many Americans forgot about 9/11.  :(

How can anyone forget 9/11???????????????????????????? We all saw the World Trade Center getting attacked and crashing down on live TV. The images are so seared into my mind that I remember it vividly. :( Such a sad day for America. I cannot think of anyone more hated than Osama bin Laden. Sure he had been challenged as most hated by the likes of Fred Phelps, Lori Drew, Joran van der Sloot, or South Hadley 6. He even beats Kim Jong-Il, Saddam Hussein, Hugo Chavez, and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as the most hated person.

No one is forgetting about 9-11, but some on the left would like us to.

I notice the left does not want to forget Kent State Massacre, even though it was their own doing.

Yeah, well Horst Wessel was lionized as a martyr by the (National) Socialists of an earlier generation for much the same kinds of shit.

This is just a sick publicity stunt. I respect their right to freely practicee their religon, but do the muslims really have to do it right there? I mean, they really can't find another plaxe to build a mosque in their region?

Yes they really do, because their purpose is to build a monument to their victory in 2001.

I'm a NYer, and I can tell you there's plenty of outrage here, although I do apologize on behalf of our sorry-ass liberal elitist rulers. We're under the thumb of one of the most undemocratic states and cities in the country. Our will be damned (sound familiar?).

We'll do everything we can to stop this revolting, sickening acquiescense to Moslem infiltration and triumphalism, including civil disobedience, eg, physically sitting in and blocking construction should it ever get started. And I'll tell you this much: they're going to have a helluva time finding a construction company whose workers will agree to work on this abomination.

There's another protest on Sept 12th. About 8,000 (myself included) attended the first protest and that was before it had shown up on talk radio's radar, Fox News, and before national figures like Sarah Palin and Newt spoke up on the matter. I'm expecting a huge turnout Sunday the 12th--and if Governor Palin shows up, you KNOW it'll be a monster turnout. Last time people came from far and wide, from all over the country. This time it'll probably be huge.

You're welcome, and I made a mistake: the protest has been moved to the 11th itself, so as not to conflict with the 9/12 taxpayer march on DC.

Preaching to the choir man, this shit is absurd. Lets build a shinto temple at Pearl Harbor and a British embassy on the site of the Boston Massacre after this mosque is done!

It shows no respect for the families of those lost. I hope the officials who gave the green light on it are haunted by those that died

I'm sorry if what I said came out the wrong way.

I was an emotional baby last night.  The computer should be taken away from me on nights like that.

Petiton was at 8,000 yesterday.

It's 18,000+ today.

I forwarded it to my mother in Florida, among others--should be getting lots of sign-ups there.

Oh hey, Hawkwarrior, of course you're one of the good guys. I was just using your post as a springboard.

-----------

In case you didn't get to see it, here's the intrepid Pamela Gellar on O'Reilly. In addititon to being right and a great organizer, she's damned brave. The reality is she's putting her life on the line fighting this thing, and we all know it.

But as strong as Gellar is in this issue, she still does that bit of sugar-coating that so many do: "I don't think the Islamic community wants it, I think the Islamic supremacists want it."

No Pamela. The "Islamic community" DOES want their triumphal mosque. Even brave fighters for truth such as yourself have start being fully honest with themselves and stop making this false distinction.

I saw Gellar's interview too.

I thought that she was trying to be specific using the phrase "Islamic supremacists", rather than "Islamic community" more from a legality standpoint than a belief standpoint.

I do thing she knows and believes it to be the Islamic community, but she has probably been cautioned by an attorney to be specific and say Islamic supremacists in order to avoid legal issues, but more specifically to try to protect herself and her family from retaliation from these crazies. I thought a couple of times, she had to catch herself and make sure that she said "supremacists".

I do hope that she and her family have some bodyguards.

Give a hot dog vendor a license to sell right outside the door. Maybe a deli next door.

On second look, I think you're right, debk. There'd be no legal issue involved, though, if she had said "Islamic community" (that'd be plain 1st-amendment protected free speech and not defamatory, as it's an opinion, not a statement of unprovable fact; I think it's more about the retaliation and also that she sees some PR value in making the distinction for the sake of "appearing reasonable." Even though it's a false distinction.

I thought about the 1st Amendment too, but I still think with her, as the "chief" of her organization, she was probably warned about being specific.

It's one thing for you and I, or everyone here to talk about Islamic supremacists and the Islamic community either as one and the same, or comparable, but going out into the public and addressing an audience...as she was on O'Reilly...she has to avoid sounding "racist"(I'm beginning to really hate that word!!) and characterizing all Muslims as "evil terrorists".

And you are right that it's a "false distinction"....and anyone watching it could say the same. However, false or not, she still was extremely clear to point out the distinction, and can not be accused otherwise.

Will that make a difference to the "supremacists" as to harming her or her family? Probably not.

I do think that with her going out on these various tv shows, it may make her and her family safer. If anything should happen, God forbid, to her or her family....guess which direction the police would be looking first? That guy who's in charge of the mosque/community center, would be my first guess.
