BP Oil Spill: Did Firefighters Help Sink the Deepwater Horizon Rig?

In the chaotic aftermath of the explosion on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig, a poorly orchestrated effort to knock down the towering blaze may have inadvertently led to the sinking of the platform, according to interviews and documents obtained by the Center for Public Integrity and shared with ABC News.

As part of an ongoing government investigation, Coast Guard officials are trying to reconstruct the initial response to the rig explosion that unleashed one of the worst environmental disasters in U.S. history. One concern surrounds the use of briny seawater instead of fire-retardant foam to drench the rig. The Coast Guard confirmed that Capt. Hung M. Nguyen, who is heading the investigation, is examining whether the decision to spray salt water across the burning platform overwhelmed the ballasts that kept the rig afloat, changing its weight distribution and causing it to list, and then sink.

"The joint investigation is absolutely looking into that, and whether it contributed to the sinking," Capt. Ronald A. LaBrec, the Coast Guard's chief spokesman, told the Center.

Hmmmmmmmmm, this is rather interesting that firefighting efforts help sink the Deepwater Horizon platform.

OK, the link says "unavailable", so here goes what I have heard.

A firefighting crew that specializes in fighting fires on oil rigs was hired to put out the fire. They were using foam and fighting the fire in the proper way. The Coast Guard came in and "ORDERED" them to use high pressure water hoses and massive amounts of water that caused the rig (which floats) to roll over and break the pipe (well head) off.

To my understanding, the Coast Guard did not have and does not have the authority nor the expertize to take control of the oil rig firefighting operations. So the oil spill is the result of US Governments intervention.....own it Obama.

Wouldn't be the first time "government expertise" took a perfectly good situation and FUBARed it....

They do it constantly and on a daily basis.

Any Sailor or Coast Guardsman, trained in basic shipboard firefighting, knows that you never ever use seawater as a primary agent for fighting a class 'B' fire (fuel oil, lubricants, etc).  The only time seawater is used is if you are trying to contain the oil in one spot until you can put foam or some other type of smothering agent over it.

What I would be asking is why (and under whose direction) any Sailor or Puddle Pirate would direct a firefighting crew to cease using foam?  That, my friends, is more of a mystery.

This would explain his over-the-top interest and finger pointing regarding the spill.

If memory serves, this issue was brought up and quickly squashed not long after the "accident".
