I have 1 1/2 lbs of ground

but I would like to make something different, I'm thinking something like a hash with potatoes, onions, zucchini, tomatoes and spices I have plenty of lettuce also. I have some homemade refried beans, corn and flour tortillas and salsa

You all are so helpful - maybe a new idea from the same stuff like meatloaf, meatballs, hamburgers and tacos.

I dunno how it's possible to get tired of hamburgers.

Especially when the grease has been squeezed out of them.

1. Try slumgullion

http://www.cooks.com/rec/view/0,1626,146165-242205,00.h...

There are as many recipes as there are cooks, but it's the cheap and filling thing a lot of mothers throw onto the table at the last minute that everybody likes.

My mother's version was a bit different: ground beef, chopped onion, chopped celery, seasoned when browned/sweat with oregano and a teaspoon or so of curry powder. A can or two of concentrated tomato soup was added. It would pass for spaghetti sauce, be served on buns or in sub rolls, or mixed with cooked macaroni. It doesn't look like it, but it's remarkably good.

4. Actually, it's a combination of two words that basically each mean "mud"

and was originally a watery stew served over stale bread to stretch the both of them.

My mother's take on it was one of the best things she did, although that wasn't hard since she was such an unenthusiastic cook.

I've tried meatless versions but it's not just the same. It needs ground turkey, at the most pious, and cheap, greasy ground beef to be its best.

One suspects the defrocked warped primitive is setting herself up for clogged veins.

5. We always use Italian sausage and sliced zucchini when making slumgullion

Real small zucchini' though. No bigger around than a nickel.

It comes out really tasty too.

6. Sometimes I make a skillet meal....

...with browned hamburger, chili powder, cumin, a can of beans, onion, zucchini, bell pepper, tomatoes, corn, and then melt lots of cheese on top. Serve with sour cream and tortillas and salsa. A meal in a pan.

Hmm...lemmie think here...brown your burger, slosh in some finely chopped potatoes, onions, zucchini, tomatoes and spices. Add lettuce after browning, throw it in a horse feed bucket, strap the bucket to your head...

ENJOY!!!111

I used to make it a lot when the kids were young. Fairly inexpensive and a good leftover.

Mine is ground beef, chopped onion, celery, and garlic, sliced canned mushrooms all cooked together until the meat's browned. (I will drain most of the grease out, but not necessary)  Add 3/4's of a large can of V8 juice, black pepper, can of petite diced tomatoes. Get it to almost a boil, add half of a bag (or more if wanted) of "skinny" egg noodles. When the noodles are done, add a can of drained corn (I prefer Green Giant niblets). May need to add more V8 depending on how much of the liquid the noodles soaked up. I don't add salt until the end, because the V8 juice is salty. Personally, I think it's better the next day.

I don't eat a lot of "mixed" foods except salads and soups. I'm anal that way. I even put my food in their own little bowls so my food doesn't touch. If juice from a fruit salad touches my meat either someone else gets it or I'll throw it out or give it to the dogs.

Why?  Are you mad at the grill or something?

This particular dish in question sounds like something my mom would have made.  She liked to pride herself on feeding a big family for the least amount of money.  She never did, though.

Cindie, that's a funny quirk...what do you do in restaurants?

Goulash

Ground Beef
Onion - diced
Green Bell Pepper - diced
macaroni
Tomato Juice (the large can, now it's a plastic bottle ~ I only like Campbell's)

Brown the ground beef.  While the ground beef is browning add onion and bell pepper and saute with the ground beef.  Drain mixture.  While ground beef is browning cook macaroni according to directions on the package.  Drain macaroni (I just dump it on top of the meat mixture in my strainer).  Dump it back in the same pot you cooked the macaroni in and add tomato juice. Enough to make it soupy.  I usually pour all of the tomato juice in the pot then add the macaroni/meat mixture because sometimes I cook too much and it wouldn't be "soupy" enough if I added it all.  Don't COOK the tomato juice, just let the macaroni/meat mixture heat it up (sit it on the same burner that you cooked the macaroni but turn it off).  Add salt and pepper.....YUM

Im bad, but not that bad..

I eat nearly everything with a fork and a knife - getting food on my fingers makes me nuts. fried chicken, ribs, corn on the cob, sloppy sandwiches or burgers.. fork and knife. I don't like food unintentionally mixed either, but I can usually deal with it.

Almost forgot --

as for this thread - this kitchen concoction sounds too much like manwich or sloppy joe - I will not eat either of these things.

I had a pound of ground beef left over the other week and bought a can of Sloppy Joe's and some buns just for the hell of it.  The directions make for a very loose sandwich... I think it was one can per pound of beef.  I would have cut that amount in half.

Tasted like flavored ketchup.  Now I remember why its been years since I bothered with it.

I think Manwich changed their recipe, it doesn't taste as sweet as it used to taste and the sauce is much thinner compared to when it 1st came out.
