Oh my.

The things one learns, randomly strolling around Skins's island, taking in the sights.

MRS. ALFRED PACKER
Response to Original message

1. Vegetarians will, but vegans will not usually.

By the way, franksolich is still working on that War and Peace-sized sex novel about Mrs. Alfred Packer, but is kind of bogged down in the chapter involving the pig-tailed bent-backed slipper-wearing Chinaman and the notorious racist sinophobic Mrs. Alfred Packer.

While reading Mrs. Alfred Packer earlier this morning, the Muses struck franksolich, suggesting Mrs. Alfred Packer bear an infant, Wild Bill Jr., with suspiciously-slanted eyes.

Whatever; we'll see how it goes.

2. My daughter's vegan and eats yeast products.

It's classified in the fungi group, not the animal group.

4. Yeast is a fungus so of course vegetarians and vegans eat them, at least if they know how to read.

5. If they're ethical, they will eschew grains, because lots of animals are killed in harvesting it.

mice, voles, gophers, chipmunks, and so on, not to mention the vast quantities of insects.

Plus, of course, the massive deforestation or prairie destruction that takes place to make land to grow grains and all the animals that are killed/displaced in that process.

The ethical vegetarian will also eschew all farmed veggies and fruits.

7. The truly ethical vegetarian will eschew grains, leaves, seeds, and other parts of living things that don't want to be eaten in favor of fruit that has fallen to the ground. They will then deposit the seed that passes through their bodies in places new fruiting trees can grow and flourish.

Or they can get a grip and realize the way this planet works is that we have to eat other creatures to live, whether they're rooted to the ground or ambulatory, depending which species we are.

Morality vegetarians irritate the crap out of me.

I stopped eating meat because I didn't like it all that much. I kept eating a veg diet because it was cheaper and I felt better on it. I also don't give a rip what anybody else needs to eat to feel well.

Bon appetit.

My, my, the defrocked warped primitive seems grouchy.

It must be that time of the month again.

8. I, OTOH, love the taste of meat but strongly disapprove of how it's produced in our industrialized agricultural system here in the US, so I wind up not eating much of it (compared to when I was growing up).

Plus, fresh produce here in CA is great year-round and it's a shame not to take advantage of that. So a lot of times I simply don't have room in my meal plans for meat.

9. I've given up red meat altogether since I really dislike it now and have completely lost any appreciation for the flavor. The rare chicken I eat (and last week was one of those rare times, chicken breasts braised in white wine, heavy cream and thyme) is free range, organically grown chicken that can't be cut with the side of a fork. Most of the time I stick to Quorn, though, as it satisfies the fried chicken Jones and is actually a lot cheaper than organically raised chicken.

I'm a vegetarian. Well technically, an ovo-lacto-pesca-vegetarian since I eat eggs, dairy & fish. It would be HARD to give up bread. Hurrah for fungus!

11. Yeast are neither plants nor animals

They're in a completely different kingdom, the fungi, which also includes mushrooms and molds. Besides, if you give up bread you also have to give up beer and wine.

(There's some evidence that fungi may be more closely related to the kingdom animalia than to the plantae, and mushroom cells contain the same form of chitin found in arthropod exoskeletons, but as far as I'm concerned if it grows in the ground it's not an animal. Now pass me a beer)

Yeah, but why would a DUmmy bother to make things easier?  They could just have a "Gay" forum, BUT NO!  It has to be the gay/lesbian/transgender/furry/alternative lifestyle/animal sex forum.

Please convince all DUmmies to forgo eating anything but plants that grow in the wild.
In a couple of weeks they will have all starved.

Uh......

I read it as no mammals or poultry, cuz she doesn't eat birds.  But I guess she does, since she eats eggs???  I mean really.  An egg is a baby chicken, so why don't you just eat the whole thing???   :thatsright:

Well, technically speaking the egg is what nurtures the chick. Sometimes when you crack and egg you'll see a little spot on the yolk, just a slightly different shade than the yolk. This is what would become the embryo. The yolk provides most of the nourishment for the growing chick. The white or albumen provides protections, protein, water, and air (a chick will start using it's lungs a couple days before it's hatched). Incidentally, if you look at a day old chick you'll see a point at the end of it's beak that's a different color than the rest of the beak. This is called the egg tooth and is used solely to peck it's way out of the shell. It disappears within a few days.

If life begins at conception for people, it does for chickens too, so perhaps their love of eating eggs is really behind their position on abortion.

The eggs you buy in the grocery store are not fertilized.  A chicken will produce an egg every 2-3 days whether a rooster is around or not.  So don't worry about it being an embryo because it is not one.

I know.

I'm one of those people who likes very rare beef, med rare lamb or veal, slightly pink pork and venison, completely cooked chicken and turkey ...I just prefer to not associate the food on my plate, with what it originally was, how it was grown, and particularly without knowing what the process was to get it from one form into another.  :-)

I love eating meat. For health reasons, I have had to cut out most saturated fat, and cut way down on my meat portions. So instead of a year ago, where I would throw a 1 LB steak on the grill, I cut that steak in three pieces, and get three meals out of it. I fill in the rest with whole grains, vegetables, and fruit.

I almost orgasm though, when I get a little piece of well singed fat from the edge of the steak on my tongue. God that good stuff. Or a little bit of chicken skin that I missed stripping off the chicken? O.M.G.

One of my ex girlfriends was a vegan... she was into what she called "live food". That is, eating vegetables that are as close to alive as possible. For instance, wheatgrass that was just cut, blended in a blender to make wheatgrass juice. That frothy stuff on top represents the wheatgrass' life force apparently. It always reminded me of that bit of froth on top of an espresso.
