Why am I not surprised?  It's "The Land of Fruits and Nuts," after all.

-- Shari Roan

Almost 5 million California adults say they could use help with a mental or emotional problem, according to a survey released Wednesday by researchers at UCLA. About 1 million of them meet the criteria for "serious psychological distress."

However, only one in three people who perceive a need for mental health services or are in serious distress have seen a professional for treatment, the survey found.

The survey was conducted among more than 44,000 adults as part of the 2005 California Health Interview Survey, administered through the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research. Since the survey was conducted, the recession probably has contributed to worsening mental health for even more people, said the lead author of the study, David Grant.

Again, 5 million?  That's actually closer to 1 in 8.  And "mental health care" has such a broad connotation...could be counseling to therapy to psychiatric care.

Oh, and those numbers, boys and girls?  That's pretty close to national/industrialized nation figures.

And then there is the additional 1 in 5 Californians that need serious psychlogical adjustment and refuse to admit it.

Wonder what their DUmp names are?

Again, like I said, this isn't exactly earth-shattering, not to mention it would put those truly in need of mental help in a bad light.

Not a good idea, folks.

Many of those that think they need help in that poll are likely facing no more stresses than what we all do every day.  Just because it's California, it makes it news.
