As lawmakers and health experts wrestle over whether a controversial chemical, bisphenol-A, should be banned from food and beverage containers, a new analysis by an environmental group suggests Americans are being exposed to BPA through another, surprising route: paper receipts.
The Environmental Working Group found BPA on 40 percent of the receipts it collected from supermarkets, automated teller machines, gas stations and chain stores. In some cases, the total amount of BPA on the receipt was 1,000 times the amount found in the epoxy lining of a can of food, another controversial use of the chemical.
Sonya Lunder, a senior analyst with the environmental group, says BPA's prevalence on receipts could help explain why the chemical can be detected in the urine of an estimated 93 percent of Americans, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
"We've come across potentially major sources of BPA right here in our daily lives," Lunder said. "When you're carrying around a receipt in your wallet for months while you intend to return something, you could be shedding BPA into your home, into your environment. If you throw a receipt into a bag of food, and it's lying there against an apple, or you shove a receipt into your bag next to a baby pacifier, you could be getting all kinds of exposure and not realize it."

Oxygen in too high a concentration for extended periods can cause all sorts of diseases, including activation of several oncogenes. So, in answer to your question, no.

Will cashiers think I'm crazy if I don rubber gloves before they hand me my receipt, and then put it in a hazard materials bag?

Probably. But that's at least half the fun of it.

Sigh. I guess I need to invest in a Haz-Mat suit.

you know, I had a sneaking suspicion all along that that paper was carcinogenic. I mean, just FEEL that stuff! Semi-crinkly, with that annoying tendency to curl up. It's got to be a death product developed by the Soviets!!!!
I can see it now....on the eastern fringes of the Caucusus, in a deep mountain cave hundreds of feet below the surface, a facility so secretive that the Russian government denies its existence.
Protected by steel-reinforced concrete 15-feet thick, hundreds of slave laborers who were once the grandchildren of those who had gone to the gulags back in Stalin's day stir the cauldrons that contain the evil product known as BPA. The workers who work directly with BPA develop pus-filled lesions within mere hours of exposure and within two weeks they're dead.
The remains are carted off to a glowing cesspool to join the others who were also relegated to working with the toxic chemical.
Turnover among the slave laborers is rather high, as can be expected. But that doesn't stop the evil guards from flaying those who utter a sound in protest at the starvation rations and filthy cells in which the slaves are kept then they're not working their 14-hour shifts, 7 days a week. Some of the longest-term prisoners have been within the facility for as much as 18 months -- these have not been sent to handle BPA as of yet.
But their time is nigh.

You're ignoring the obvious with your hypothesis, Euph. Paper was invented by the ChiComs. It's mind-boggling how far back in the inky mists of time this insidious plot goes, sir.

True dat. But the Soviets imported a few dozen Lithuanians who had spent some time in Shanghai, shacked up in a brothel. That's where the idea for crinkly paper spawned (no pun intended).
