BOSTON — Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry is docking his family's new $7 million yacht in neighboring Rhode Island, saving roughly $500,000 in Bay State taxes.
If the boat were docked at the couple's summer vacation home on Nantucket, they would be liable for $437,500 in one-time sales tax. They'd also have to pay $70,000 in annual excise taxes.
Instead, Rhode Island has repealed those taxes.

2. Nobody should be that wealthy.
And a family worth hundreds of millions, especially one so involved in "public service", should be evading taxes in their own state.
This is disgraceful, but indicative of the fundamental problem, and is not limited to either party.

If I had that much money, I am sure I would be doing the same thing.
Edited to add--I wouldn't HAVE a yacht, though, nor would I have a super extravagant wedding. But, I definitely would take advantage of every tax savings I could muster.

With multi-millionaires making decisions for us, it's no wonder.
NO ONE who can afford to go out and buy a $7 million yacht could possibly understand what the average American is faced with.
Anyone who has a summer vacation home on Nantucket is too far separated from the real needs and issues to be an effective representative.
This is why we need publicly financed elections. We've got to get the millionaires with all the money and connections OUT OF OUR GOVERNMENT. This isn't a slam against Kerry in particular, but it's pretty clear to me why things are so bad, the people making the decisions simply are not in a position to comprehend what today's average American is facing.

Is the yaht Kerry's or his wife's? Or is it a joint venture. Remember, in BIG MONEY marriage mergers, what is his is hers and what is hers is his isn't quite how it goes?
franksolich is really disappointed that Doug's stupid ex-wife hasn't shown up at this campfire, to defend the excesses of someone Doug's stupid ex-wife likes.

I think you need to look up the stats of those in the Senate and the Congress, you'll see the majority of the politicians who are wealthy are Democrats, and the wealthiest are Democrats.

Some of the marine companies have been complaining about that. I guess building one yacht could keep hundreds of people on their jobs.
