Sen. John Kerry skips town on sails tax
By Gayle Fee and Laura Raposa | Friday, July 23, 2010 | http://www.bostonherald.com | The Inside Track
Sen. John Kerry, who has repeatedly voted to raise taxes while in Congress, dodged a whopping six-figure state tax bill on his new multimillion-dollar yacht by mooring her in Newport, R.I.
Isabel - Kerry’s luxe, 76-foot New Zealand-built Friendship sloop with an Edwardian-style, glossy varnished teak interior, two VIP main cabins and a pilothouse fitted with a wet bar and cold wine storage - was designed by Rhode Island boat designer Ted Fontaine.
But instead of berthing the vessel in Nantucket, where the senator summers with the missus, Teresa Heinz, Isabel’s hailing port is listed as “Newport†on her stern.
Could the reason be that the Ocean State repealed its Boat Sales and Use Tax back in 1993, making the tiny state to the south a haven - like the Cayman Islands, Bermuda and Nassau - for tax-skirting luxury yacht owners?
Cash-strapped Massachusetts still collects a 6.25 percent sales tax and an annual excise tax on yachts. Sources say Isabel sold for something in the neighborhood of $7 million, meaning Kerry saved approximately $437,500 in sales tax and an annual excise tax of about $70,000.

Then tries to claim he's berthing it there for maintenance and upkeep reasons, not tax reasons.
Yeah, riiiiiiiiggggghhhhttttt...
Remember boys and girls, taxes are for "little people."
-
Think that this'll be enough to wake up the little people, those who pay taxes in Taxachusetts, and vote this asshole out?
Nah......I didn't think so either.
-
Built in New Zealand.....can you say outsourcing boys and girls.

Eupher, up and down both coasts middle class people take advantage of the laws that allow them to register their boats in another state and not have the huge taxes from their own State.
The poor seldom own big boats, matter of fact the people that are close to New Hampshire from Mass. drive up here to buy tax free cars, and other big ticket items.
This is just people, the rich and the very poor to save a few bucks.
If one lives in the State of Maine or Mass, they will drive 30-60 minutes to shop tax free in New Hampshire.
So do you believe that someone with a few million dollars in the bank has less rights then someone living in a tent.?
Everyone of us who goes to H&R Block are looking for a loop hole to lower our taxes, taking every lawfull deduction we can find.
Carefull where you tread here, when the tax benefits are removed from the wealthy it will also take the same benefits from the poor and middle class.
-
That's okay. The one I want (when/if I finally pull down the right numbers in powerball) is 148' long, running about $4 million ($3 million less expensive for about double the boat), and was built in Turkey.

Vesta, you're completely missing the point. The point is, the man doesn't practice what he preaches. This is evidenced by his behaviors -- he's rich and he flaunts it. Hardly sounds like a Dem who champions causes for the "little people", does it?
This is a guy who thinks he's better than others, and allows his money (actually, his wife's money) who distances himself from the masses -- which completely misrepresents the libs/Dems who make a big issue out of "poor people."
Is he taking a lawful deduction? Most likely. Does that make it right? Maybe not -- some would say (and I would agree with this) that a public persona such as John F'n Kerry SHOULD go ahead and pony up the various taxes. It's called "supporting your own."
I equate this kind of thing to a GM executive who drives a Ford because it's cheaper, or it's a better car. There's no loyalty, there's no teamwork. John F'n Kerry is flipping every taxpayer in Masshole the :bigbird: simply because he can.
Image and political reality notwithstanding, this kind of shit smacks of elitism -- the "I've got mine, and you don't."
You can defend this asshole all you want, Vesta, but that alters nothing. Kerry is an elitist snob whose shit doesn't stink - at least in his own mind.
-
It doesn't matter if the "rich" and "poor" all do it....going to a different state to get a better deal. The "rich" got rich by finding whatever way...most of them legal...that there's a way to make or save themselves money.
However....in Kerry's case....all he does is badmouth those ways and say that the "rich" should not be allowed to use those ways, because all it does is make them richer and prevent the "rightful" money going to those "so much less fortunate".
Eupher's point ...among others here, Vesta...is that Kerry talks the talk....but doesn't walk the walk. It doesn't matter if he takes advantage of the savings....it's that he takes the advantage, all the while putting down those who do and trying to convince others how evil those "rich" are.

New article today:
U.S. Sen. John Kerry, the owner of a new, super-luxe 76-foot yacht, is not dodging a six-figure Massachusetts tax bill by docking the Isabel in Rhode Island and will pony up to the state if “any taxes are owed,†a spokesman for the alleged tax-skipping skipper said.
And it appears the senior senator may be on the hook for more than $500,000 in state and local taxes because Kerry tied his toney tub up in Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket waters within six months of buying her.
The sexy sloop, which Kerry purchased in March and is currently docking in Portsmouth, R.I., was spotted in the Nantucket Boat Basin over the Fourth of July holiday. Teresa Heinz, Kerry’s wife, owns a haute home on the island’s waterfront.

The tax dodger purchased the boat for use in MA -- there is no "if any taxes are owed," he owes them and he knows it.
-
Presumption of use, asshole. Pay up.
Yeah, the Department of Revenue doesn't care about Kerry and a potential half million bucks, but they're about half a step away from (once again) posting agents at the liquor stores on I-93 and I-95 in NH to take down plates. Governor Lynch just had to sign a bill telling Massachusetts to get ****ed because they were DEMANDING lists of people who purchased items in NH businesses.

Nothing that prick does suprises me anymore

Pretty "rich," eh?

The senior senator’s chief of staff David Wade denied the old salt was berthing his boat out of state to avoid ponying up to the commonwealth.

Now, in fairness to the now-senior Senator from Massachusetts, on the page I linked to is a link to a story where he now says that he will pay "if 'taxes are owed.'" Which means, since he docks the thing in Rhode Island, that there aren't any. What a hypocrite.
-
Not surprising since he is still dodging his paperwork to let everyone see if his service in Vietnam really did amount to those 3 purple hearts.

Since this whole thing was all over Fox, and the internet, yesterday...I'd venture a guess, that's how the state found out about this (like they didn't already know :whatever:)...and now, Kerry's spokespeople are trying to cover his ass.
I looked at several sites yesterday, that had articles about him skipping on the taxes....the comments were something else! Lot of hostility....from both parties! :evillaugh:
-
Oh he got the purple hearts. The paperwork was to prove he was honorably discharged.
and the taxes. well typical democrat...taxes are what little people pay, democrats just ignore them.
-
He does owe it.
