Hello to everyone,
I live in Illinois with my wonderful wife and kids on a small acreage in the country. We grow most of our own vegetables and fruit, raise chickens for eggs and meat, and try to be as self sufficient as possible. We sell what we don't use, and I do some consulting when that won't pay the bills. I suppose I am considered conservative as I believe that the power of our country lies in the people, not the government. I believe in personal responsibility, moral values, and the importance of family. I don't like whiners, liars, cheats, or laziness and do like the great outdoors, self starters, and the simple things. I enjoy a good debate but will always approach a topic with an open mind. There is always something to learn. I'm looking forward to becoming a part of this forum.

Welcome and good wishes, sir.
But out here in the real midwest--the Upper Great Plains states--we consider any state east of the Missouri River an "eastern state."
Illinois is east of the Missouri River. Just like Iowa, another one of those eastern states.
-
Hey TJ and welcome! I would agree with you that you are in the midwest, being in IL. Heck, anyone west of Pittsburgh is a midwesterner :-) (sorry, Frank!) to those of us hugging the east coast.
Hope you enjoy the Cave!
Sue

Er....Frank.....what about those of us here in the part of the midwest where the Missouri River runs west to east, instead of predominately north to south?
And welcome TJ!!

How ya doing, TJ. Welcome to The Cave. Have fun!
Side note: You and I are going to have a problem. I live up north, you see. Pure Badger fan here. We can settle it in the sports area of the forum though, I'm sure.
-
Although I live in Ill., I am a Hawkeye. I attended the University Of Iowa and they will always be my team. I always enjoy our games against the Badgers as you are great opponents. I like all sports but am looking forward to football most this year. GO HAWKS!
-
We'll have many a conversation, I'm sure.
NFL fan?
-
Not so much. KC is my team (from way back when Ed Podilak, who went to Iowa, played) and I watch when I can but I enjoy college football more. Same with B-Ball...won't watch pro ball but enjoy the college game.

As you know, sir, Nebraska recently joined the Big 10--we finally got rid of sorryass Colorado, but now we're stuck with sorryass Penn State--and there's much speculation here about a "rival" for us.
franksolich thinks Nebraska's only rival in the Big 10 will be Ohio State, and that given a few more years, the Nebraska-Ohio State rivalry will outclass the Ohio State-Michigan rivalry.
But franksolich is in a minority here in Nebraska; there are some suggesting that the Nebraska-Iowa match-up could turn into an authentic rivalry, but I hope to God not. Better to have at least one state separating two rivals. The largest plurality of common sentiment seems to favor a Nebraska-Wisconsin rivalry. I'm okay with that, but I'd just as soon have a Nebraska-Ohio State thing going.
How do you feel, sir, about us joining you?
Actually, I was hoping the Big 12 would kick out the Texas teams, reverting back to the old Big 8 of Nebraska-Oklahoma glory, and also eject sorryass Colorado, replacing them with Arkansas.
But alas, it's rare that any of us get what we want.
-
By the way, TJ, sir, franksolich really a nice guy, one of the nicest guys one can hope to meet.
I'm just out of sorts a little bit, today and yesterday.
-
^ Truth...on both counts. :-)

Erm...I don't know about that, sir. The OSU/Mich rivalry has been going on since before the Woody Hayes era. A fair bit before. There's actually a show on HBO once in a while all about the enormous rivalry. I learned a lot. (Not to mention I lived in Ohio for a few years of my life, so I have first hand knowledge.)

Well, right, it's going to take circa 90 years or something, for a Nebraska-Ohio State rivalry to match the legendary Ohio State-Michigan rivalry. But we got time.
I'm in favor of Ohio State, because Nebraska's greatness was built upon emulating Ohio State.
-
I don't have quite the venom for Mich that I probably should, (LOT of relatives down in the Buckeye state) but I still hate them.
Hey Frank, what do you call a Wolverine with a National title ring?
A thief. :rotf:

TJ: I really hope you didn't get scared off. That was a rogue incident here. You just happened to be in the wrong place, at the wrong time. Every one of us who was caught in the...erm...discussion did, actually. Here's hoping you settle in at the Cave, and happy posting. :cheersmate:

I have no doubt about that, and I'm thrilled to have Nebraska in our conference. It seems like a natural fit. I've been to my share of games in Lincoln and have found it to be an invigorating experience. I think a friendly rivalry between us would be great.

Hi TJ and welcome! :cheersmate:
Thank you for the welcome Iassa.

Thank you littlelamb. I enjoy reading others viewpoints and learning from them, and after some searching I found this site. I find the discussions interesting, the viewpoints varied, and feel that I can learn something by being a part of the forum.

Thank you chit. I'm a country boy who lives on a small acreage near the Iowa border and work in Iowa. I enjoy visiting Chicago, but love the peace of rural living.

Thank you Thor...I do walk around quite a bit, and there are definitely those who consider me an idiot so I accept your definition in the spirit in which it was presented.

We're a rowdy bunch here, sir.
Carry on.

Hello fellow Illinoisans (and midwesterners, and conservatives!).
OP, you're living the life in the country I want. Ok, at least the acreage and the garden. I could do without chickens :p

Good evening, Geste. Welcome, and have a pleasant stay. :cheersmate:
