Title: unknown movie star
Post by: franksolich on July 09, 2010, 04:59:20 PM
On the back of this photograph is the notation, "Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, 1940, movie star."

I found this in a box of photographs of the grandparents.

Anybody have any idea who this is?  Roy Rogers?  Tom Mix?

Gene Autry...."The Singing Cowboy".

I was unscrambling the inside of my head, trying to recall names of stars of westerns during the 1930s, and that one never popped up.

I was thinking it might be the guy who played the "Lone Ranger" on a radio show popular at the time, but couldn't remember his name.

Are you sure it's Gene Autry, sir?

I don't want to file it away misidentified.

Oh my.

This guy really got around, in movies and song.

Anyway, I found this at wikipedia:

Quote
From 1940 to 1956, Autry had a huge hit with a weekly show on CBS Radio, Gene Autry's Melody Ranch. His horse, Champion, also had a CBS-TV and Mutual radio series, The Adventures of Champion. He created the Cowboy Code, or Cowboy Commandments, in response to his young radio listeners aspiring to emulate him. Under his code, the Cowboy must:

   1. never shoot first, hit a smaller man, or take unfair advantage.
   2. never go back on his word, or a trust confided in him.
   3. always tell the truth.
   4. be gentle with children, the elderly and animals.
   5. not advocate or possess racially or religiously intolerant ideas.
   6. help people in distress.
   7. be a good worker.
   8. keep himself clean in thought, speech, action and personal habits.
   9. respect women, parents and his nation's laws.
  10. be a patriot.

Wow, good job.

I had no idea who it was, so I ran it though a face-recognition program (http://celebrity.myheritage.com/FP/Company/try-face-recognition.php) and it spat out Wilhelm Ostwald (http://nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/chemistry/laureates/1909/ostwald-bio.html).

Yes he did. He was one of the evil rich too. He once owned a baseball team...can't remember which one.

I think him and Bob Hope just about owned the southern half of California.

Gene Autry recorded "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" in 1939.  I wouldn't be surprised if he was at the 1940 Macy's parade, but I am not having any luck finding a record of it.
