Title: misbehaving mouse
Post by: Chris_ on July 09, 2010, 02:17:25 PM
I think this is a Windows setting that I can't find, but clicking on a mouse button causes my browser to go loco.  This happens in IE and Firefox, and it seems to be happening in other applications as well, which is why I think it's a Windows issue.  A single-click sometimes causes a double-click to happen, or hovering over a link or button will automatically click on that link or button.  Single-clicking over a group of words will highlight the entire paragraph.  I looked at the mouse settings in the Control Panel, but I think I'm missing something.

Did you try adjusting your mouse settings in your control panel?

Yes.  I adjusted the double-click speed.  It works, except for random times when it does what I described.

I was typing a new post and as my mouse moved over the 'underline' button, it automatically inserted an underline in the comment box.  I did nothing.

What kind of mouse do you have?

This one is a Belkin USB mouse (a standard ball-mouse, not an optical one).

I swapped the ball mouse out for a Microsoft optical USB, but it seems to be doing the same thing.  I stopped the mouse on top of a desktop icon, and that program opened.

I have another generic P/S2 optical mouse, but that one seems to be dead.

The computers at work do the same thing.

Are you using the standard MS USB Mouse driver or the Belkin one??

i'm using the standard XP driver.  I was not able to find an updated one for that mouse or the Microsoft optical mouse.  The Microsoft mouse has the same problem but not as often.

I've found that sometimes, you have to tell XP to just sit down and shut up and force install a driver.

I'm using the Belkin mouse right now and Windows "found" a driver for a Samsung mouse that seems to be working temporarily.  The problem still exists but happens less often.

I ran Ubuntu from the install CD and got to the desktop.  This problem does not happen in Linux, which makes me think it's a Microsoft problem.  I still cannot locate drivers for my new motherboard.

edit: disabled USB 2.0 in the BIOS.  That seems to have fixed the problem. And the problem is still there.

I found a workaround.  I'm just going to leave all three mice plugged in at the same time.  One of them is bound to work, right? :lmao:

My wife has a corded optical mouse, and a cordless optical mouse plugged in.  For some reason drop down menus don't work with the cordless mouse.  This is the third cordless one that has done it to her.

I ran an updated version of CCleaner and it found an invalid registry entry that was causing my  mouse to double-click on a single-click event.  Still no fix for the on-off problem.  I have noticed that running the Scan For New Hardware option in the Device Manager sometimes brings them back up.

I don't have this problem running Linux and none of my other USB devices have this problem in Windows.

This one has an LED that changes colors.  Maybe it will be different this time. :p

Something that might help as a last resort type thing is to go into regedit and clean out all the mouse related devices listed under HKLM/System/CurrentControlset/Enum/USB you'll need to go through and expand most of the subkeys to find which are mouse related and which aren't. You will also need to change permissions on the individual keys before removing them.

This should cause the system to do a fresh redetect of the mouse and not use any cached driver information for that device type.

I'd probably get into the system 32 directory and remove any mouse related drivers, too.
