West Virginia's top lawyer cleared the way Thursday for Gov. Joe Manchin to put a special election for the late Robert C. Byrd's Senate seat on the November ballot.
Attorney General Darrell McGraw, responding to questions posed by Manchin a day earlier, concluded that the governor can declare a special election to fill what remains of Byrd's term. Manchin sought the legal opinion after joining a growing push to hold a vote earlier than 2012, when Byrd would have faced re-election..........cont
..................Tennant, Manchin and McGraw are all Democrats, but West Virginia voters overwhelmingly went for Republican John McCain in the 2008 presidential race. A special election would put another Democratic Senate seat in play this year as the party struggles to retain its majority.

Winning this seat would be the prize of the election. The democrats could have held onto the seat until 2012 with an appointment but the Gov. wants a special election in order to run for the Senate.
I wonder if he'll have to resign to run.

I give credit to the governor for doing the honorable thing in this case. He could have kept the seat safely in Demonrat hands until 2012.

There was no honor involved. The power hungry bastard wants the seat for himself.
Honor in reference to a democrat must never be inferred. :hammer:

He could have appointed himself if he wanted the seat that bad. Of course he probably would not re-elected if he did that.

That would have been a career killer. He knows it.

Not as far as I know. The current idiot in chief would still be a Senator if he lost the 08 election.

Manchin will win. He is quite popular here in West By God Virginia. The good news is he is a very conservative democrat. The bad new is he is a democrat. My personal opinion is he is a corrupt as hell and has an ego to match. I think he could teach Obumble a thing or two. I've actually met the bastard and don't like him at all. He will fit right in quite nicely in the DC cesspool known as the US Senate.

Looks like the feds may be after Manchin:
Just another corrupt dem politician (http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0810/40773.html)
Dunno if this will translate into a Raese win.
