A spokesman for Israel's Shin Bet security service confirmed that the four handguns "were part of the equipment sent ahead (of Netanyahu) to Washington, and got lost," adding that Israeli and U.S. authorities were investigating.

A U.S. source familiar with the matter told Reuters that two suitcases bearing seven handguns in all -- four in one bag, three in the other -- arrived at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York with Israel's security detail and were rechecked for a flight to Washington. But neither bag made it there.

Instead, both bags were later retrieved at Los Angeles International Airport, then were flown back to Washington through Chicago. When the two suitcases were reopened in Washington, the four guns from one bag were discovered to be missing, but it remained unknown where along the line the firearms were taken, the source said.

If they'd gone through Newark or Kennedy, the odds would be on ramp-rats with crime bosses, oh, excuse me, 'Union stewards' being involved.  With National or LAX involved, though, it's 50-50 between the airport criminals or TSA.

I saw an expose on how ramp rats would rifle through people's luggage when working the baggage area. I've also read that since TSA got involved, "Lost" property claims have skyrocketed. We had a few claims when I worked for Delta at Minneapolis/ St Paul IAP. They finally caught the rat that was stealing. He went to jail after he was fired. It doesn't help matters much that suitcases with guns have day-glow orange stickers on them. It says," HEY!! Look at me, I have a gun inside!!"

What bothers me is whether or not these are machine pistols, which they very well could be. Imagine a Glock 18 or similar in the hands of criminals.  :o
