ALTON, Ill. -- An unruly mob lured emergency personnel to a housing complex near St. Louis with reports of a blaze, a shooting and other crimes, then attacked them with fireworks and bottle rockets, authorities said.

No one was injured in the onslaughts against firefighters and police in Alton on Sunday night and early Monday.
The attackers apparently intended the assaults as entertainment for a hundreds-strong crowd of adults and children who had gathered at the Oakwood Housing Complex to watch, said Mark Harris, a deputy fire chief who witnessed the attacks.

"Our firefighters got in there and started doing their thing, and out come the fireworks" including bottle rockets and Roman candles, Harris said. "It does appear we were lured in for that purpose."

There was no immediate word on any arrests or charges in the attacks.

Police Chief David Hayes told The Telegraph of Alton that the firefighters were first attacked when they responded to reports of a Dumpster fire in the small city about 10:20 p.m. Sunday.

Burn the projects down for real and see how fun it is for them when nobody shows up.

Take away the "gimmes" and it's amazing how quickly people manage to get back on their feet without any whining.

Next time that happens they should send gasoline tankers disguised as fire trucks into the project.....spray....WAIT...WAIT....WAIT A MINUTE..... I don't know how many of you have seen those giant water trucks they use in open pit mining to keep the dust down on the haul roads but that's exactly whats needed here. A giant water truck/tanker with 6 to 8 cab controlled nozzles and 30 to 40 thousand gallons of gas/diesel mix. They can spray an area several hundred feet wide and unload in just a few minutes.....hell....just burn down one whole side of town in one trip.

What a complete and utter waste.

Firefighters and cops have to dodge explosive, incendiary objects while performing their duties.

This country -- or at least that particular corner of it -- is fugged.

At first I thought Alton, IL was over near E. St. Louis, which is, by all accounts, a complete shithole worthy of not much more than firebombing in the manner that JR describes. But it's not. It's located further north on the Mississippi, but apparently not far enough removed from the pimps, drug dealers, and whores that Illinois seems to attract.

I saw this on Fox last night.

What an incredibly shitty thing to do.

It would serve them all right if the next time they really needed the police/fire department, no one showed up. Sadly if the police/FD did that they'd be sued, prosecuted, and found guilty.

When I was a kid, my mom's older brother and his wife lived in Alton. He went there after WWII to work for Shell Oil, worked there until retirement, and stayed there until he died, about 20 years ago. I don't remember it being a "bad" place when I was a kid, but I know it's become pretty awful in the last 15-20 years.
