1. What do you think about colors of Vinyl siding?
The guy that put mine on said he wouldn't put some colors on a house no matter what. He said some colors tend to fade out quickly. He said they have gotten a lot better at making the stuff but he was still skeptical.
Was he right?

2. I think so because I've seen old red vinyl siding that looks pink and not a nice pink, a tacky plastic toy pink.
Maybe they have gotten better at it, but the sun will still fade it. Whether or not you choose it depends on how long you expect to live with it.

5. There are brands that guarantee no fade and have a lifetime warranty against fading.

3. What do you think about the new metal roofs?
I need to replace my older 25+ yo asphalt shingles. I was considering going with something more eco-friendly.
After I replace the roof, I intend to put in a SolaTube for a dark back bedroom/

4. Last roof I had put on I considered metal
I was advised they were a little noisy during heavy rains so I backed off.
Might be something to consider if there are not any light sleepers in the house?

6. I like metal roof applications very much. You pay more for them to be installed but in my area Minnesota and Wisconsin I can show you metal roofs that are over 100 years old.

7. I need some advice on painting aluminum siding.
The siding on our house is about 30 years old. There are no dents in it or any other damage anywhere but the finish is a mess. My husband wants to paint it but he's not sure if he should use primer before he paints or not.

8. Painting Aluminum siding
Here is a good video on this subject

9. Thanks!
The video was good for the prep work but I'm looking for definitive product info. The consensus of several expert opinions seems to be using an oil-based primer and a top shelf water-based paint. I think I'll stop by the Sherwin-Williams store tomorrow for product advice.
I dunno.
I think siding sucks. Wood is always best, and if not wood, real brick or real rock.

Siding for DUmmies on welfare and foodstamps.....buy all your beer in al-U-minimum cans....cut out tops and bottoms and flatten sides....nail to side of house or roof.... use tops and bottoms to plug holes or sell to buy nails and more pot.
...and always buy the same cheap brand so it doesn't look tacky.

Siding does suck - and its gotten so common - at least around here, that the quickest way to devalue your home is to cover it with lovely beige siding. Granted, this opinion isn't without bias, as I'm an old house person..

My Granny had a tin roof on her house, as did several of my relatives. Some of the best sleep I ever had was nights spent there with a hard rain pelting that roof, punctuated occasionally by a low roll of thunder in the distance. It's an amazingly soothing sound. I can see how it might bother some people, though.

Aluminum siding is not very common here. About 15-20 years ago, the vinyl siding craze took over and nearly every new or renovated house had that junk on it. They all faded in a few years to a dull, washed-out tone of it's former self, but the worst was the only house I found around here that had aluminum siding installed. It looked more like someone stripped a 747 to cover their house with.

Metal over purlins is noisy. Metal over plywood is not much different than shingles. My next roof will be metal.

Nowadays the best thing to put on yer house is "Hardy Plank". It's made of concrete with fiber mesh in it. It's cheaper than wood, has a wood grain look, takes paint extremely well, and will last pretty much as long as the house is standing.
Did I mention it's "cheaper" than any other product except that cheap vinyl crap, that eventually gets brittle and falls away?
Didn't this guy say he had been in the siding business for 40 years? Wonder why Hardy never came up? It's been advertised as the best thing to come along since Aluminum! My experience is, as far as installation, even a DUmmie could put it up!
