Nicknamed 'Death on a Bun,' It's the Latest Salvo in the Burger Wars

To public health advocates, a new sandwich from restaurant chain Friendly's must seem like a cruel practical joke -- the Grilled Cheese Burger Melt.

The sandwich is a burger with all the trimmings, wedged between two grilled cheese sandwiches. The entire Burgermelt meal, with fries, tips the scales at 1500 calories, 97 grams of fat and a stunning 2,090 milligrams of sodium.

One blogger dubbed the dish "death on a bun," and experts agree.

"It's deadly," said Dr. Michael Jacobson, executive director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest. "It's not the kind of thing people should be eating. In fact, it's the kind of thing the Surgeon General says don't eat."

The Grilled Cheese Burger Melt is not even the highest calorie item on Friendly's menu. The restaurant also has a breakfast dish called Caramel Cinnamon Swirl French Toast -- a cinnamon bun split down the middle, fried in egg, served with ice cream, cream cheese, caramel topping and whipped cream. That's 2,090 calories for breakfast, which already exceeds federal guidelines for an entire day's worth of meals.

This is the same group that is suing McDonalds for offering toys in their Happy Meals... I wonder how many fat people they have in their membership.

This is America!! People make their choices, be them good or bad. Restaurants wouldn't come up with these calorie laden meals if there weren't a demand for them. Everything in moderation and people would be just fine. So F'n what if I were to eat this burger. It wouldn't be something I'd order and consume on a daily, weekly or even monthly basis.

When I was 15 and workin' in my dad's gas station I used to order 3 triple cheese burgers from the local tavern. I ate 3 of them a day all summer and never gained a pound. It just depends on your metabolism.

Of course at the time I was rotating the radials on 18 wheelers, that might have had somethin' to do with it!

Yeah, if I had to do it today it would kill me!

The worst one was the Gulf fuel truck! It was a Gulf station, diesel was 19.9 and we were a 3 bayer right next door to the distribution facility. The damn thing had those 5 point star mags on it! What a pain in the arse!

My favorite is the Elvis special that I add some zip to.

A grilled sandwitch with cheese, Bacon, onion, peanut butter and bananas.

Or a double hamburger with mushrooms and onion and on the side french fries and gravy.

No worries... Kagan will make sure it's illegal soon enough.
