Title: US Arrests 10 for Spying for Russia
Post by: Mike220 on June 28, 2010, 05:01:45 PM
Authorities charged 11 individuals with the plot, 10 of whom were arrested on Sunday in Boston, New York, New Jersey and Virginia on charges including conspiracy to act as unlawful agents of the Russian Federation and money laundering.

The group, dubbed the "Illegals", was accused of being tasked by the Russian intelligence agency SVR to enter the United States, assume false identities and become "deep-cover" Americans, according to the U.S. Justice Department.

Their goal was to "become sufficiently 'Americanized' such that they can gather information about the United States for Russia and can successfully recruit sources who are in, or are able to infiltrate, United States policy-making circles," according to criminal complaints filed in U.S. federal court.

However, they were not assigned to collect classified, secret information, a Justice Department official said. Most are believed to be originally from Russia and trained to secretly infiltrate the United States.

What relationship?  They tell him what to do, and he does it.  Not much else to it.

There are still a few infiltrators left in congress yet to be caught.

ETA:
This level of secrecy may deserve it's own thread, but it could be tied to this.

Obama's odd arms-control secrecy
The Obama administration is urging the Senate to ratify the US-Russia Strate gic Arms Reduction Treaty -- but it won't release the negotiating record for "New START" to senators who've asked for it.

Denying the Senate's requests raises all sorts of suspicions about the treaty, which would reduce the US strategic nuclear arsenal by about 30 percent and cut our missile silos, bombers and submarines by nearly 20 percent.
Is there is something in the blow-by-blow transcript of the talks with the Russians that the White House doesn't want senators to see?

Some fear the administration did some winking and nodding with the Kremlin on missile defense that won't show up in the treaty language. Team Obama says START doesn't limit US missile-defense plans, but the administration's remarkable weakness so far on missile defense is cause for anxiety.
President Obama & Co. have cut budgets of many missile-defense programs and put the kibosh early in their tenure on the Bush-era missile-defense system planned for Poland and the Czech Republic, aimed at Iran's nuclear/missile programs. (It's widely believed they deep-sixed the Polish-Czech program as a sop to the Russians in their near-incessant efforts to "reset" relations with the Kremlin.)
Then there's the treaty preamble that acknowledges "the link between strategic offensive and strategic defensive armaments." This language, experts say, might limit American missile-defense programs. And, while the administration says the preamble isn't part of the treaty, Moscow said on the day of the treaty signing this spring that it will withdraw from the pact if US missile defense is expanded or improved.
Thus, Washington may face the choice of defending us from North Korea and Iran or seeing New START fall apart -- not a choice we should have to make.

So by that logic (such as it is) 9/11 should be Bill Clinton's fault, right?

Hey, sauce for the goose and all that shit.

Money laundering, check, for both, trying to pass as citizens, check ,for both, worming their way into the seats of government  to influence them, check for both.

These people have not been charged with rioting in the streets, killing our citizens and scaring the heck out of our police. So far no charges of bringing  in millions of dollars in drugs,.  There are few if any of these people on wellfare, or joining gangs to make their neighborhoods so dangerous that no one will visit there even in broad day light.

Why do we not charge the Mexicans with spying as each and every illegal has some kind of family that want to see America brought down.

I am sure the Muslim comunity has a few people that make these guys look like that TV show " Get Smart and the Agent with the shoe phone.

Btw, I abhor home grown spy's, the number of Navy men that corrupted our Submarine service ---should have been hung in front of the Justice Department.

I look forward to this spy case, as as long as we allow people to stand in public and Damn our country, using their influence with the top government law makers, and allow some dinkey 3rd. world country to try to influence our laws for their benefit,  some one is going to have to show me what kind of damage they have done to our country or are capable of doing.

One the other hand if these people had been quarted in the border states I would wonder if they were not working with the illigals--perhaps they were at a distance, this will become very interesting.

As usual, I am very confused.

I wonder if this would have happend had the JDL been caught at all this.??

U.S.-Russia may seek spy swap to free agents

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20100707/ts_nm/us_russia_usa_spy

Quote
MOSCOW/WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Russia and the United States appeared to be considering a spy swap  on Wednesday to send home a ring of suspected Russian agents whose arrest cast an unwelcome Cold War chill over warming diplomatic ties.

Officials for both governments declined to confirm a deal was in the works as U.S. federal prosecutors unsealed formal charges against the group.

But a Russian lawyer involved in the affair said a swap was discussed and a U.S. official said Washington might allow the suspected spies to plead guilty and then return to Russia in exchange for the release of certain Russian prisoners.

"It's a common practice. It's been done numerous times," the official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Reuters.

All 10 suspects in U.S. custody are to be arraigned on Thursday before U.S. District Judge Kimba Wood.

Quick guilty pleas would avoid lengthy trials that officials fear may undercut improving U.S.-Russia relations. The two countries are cooperating on Russia's bid to join the World Trade Organization, the global standoff over Iran's nuclear program and other issues.

The Russian lawyer said the proposed plan includes exchanging Russian nuclear expert Igor Sutyagin, who was sentenced to 15 years in jail in 2004 for passing classified military information to a British firm which prosecutors said was a front for the U.S. Central Intelligence Agenc

Breaking on FNC. All ten are going to be traded to Russia for spies they have in prison. No word on if any or all of the Russian captives are Americans.

Well, Herr Vogel won't be part of the negotiations this time.

I was in Berlin in 1986 and I've been to and across Glienicke Bridge (we called it Freedom Bridge) several times. I thought he looked familiar.

The spy swap is already underway. The speed at which this happened is strange, IMO.  Call me paranoid, but maybe there was something that the government did not want coming if these spies had went to trial. :tinfoil2:

Into the cold: Swapped spies face uncertain lives (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100709/ap_on_re_us/russia_spy_arrests)

With a drama-filled headline like this and the sympathetic article that follows it, you'd think the AP felt sorry for these ten people and was on their side.
