"Taxation Equals Slavery"
I am sitting in one of the America Speaks town hall meetings today. They are being held all over the country to give people a chance to discuss the economy and Social Security in particular.
As I look around the room I see about 100 people and many I know to be good Democrats or active in the local progressive movement. Looks like we packed the meeting. Hooray!!
So as I'm scanning the room I see a guy who's probably in his late 60s or early 70s and he has a t-shirt on that says "Taxation Equals Slavery"
So if I get the chance I'll ask him when he stopped cashing his Social Security check and when he refused to enroll in Medicare.
There were protesters out front when I got here. I took pictures and will post them later.

Tell you what DUmmy lets tax you at 70% then taxes may not be so wonderful all of a sudden.
For years the left has claimed that working for a living is slavery.

4. I hope you do ask him Updated at 10:12 AM
those things.
I think the only people who could say taxation is slavery are the hyper-wealthy who have not been taxed enough.
The people who go out to these protests and speak on behalf of the interests of those so much wealthier than them are nothing more than a manufactured mob.
Tell you what dummy let us decide when you have been taxed enough.

When a "not rich" person like me has upwards of 40-45 percent of his pay confiscated by some government entity or another, then it's too ****ing much.
Oh, and DUmmies--FWIW, I BARELY get into the top 10 percent of income earners, and then only if I work a shitload of OT.

This has always been a simple-minded arguement, which is why the libs use it and yet don't see it.
There's nothing hypocritical about saying that you were forced to pay into a system and therefore want your money's worth for what you paid or to be fully reinbursed with interest. The only way it would be hypocritical would be to have never paid in, be against it, and then when you turn 65 you still want a check from SS. The idea of "You were forced to pay into a system you disagree with, so you shouldn't accept the check" is not an valid argument at all.
But Anne's got mental issues.

Wow, what a dismal lack of bounciness, she didn't even get to the point of confronting/denouncing him, she just thought about it.

Man I gotta stop taking a quick look at CC figuring to be in and out. Did you see my thread in the lounge on the 'Venus Fly Trap' condoms? Find the thead an go check some of the yikes dikes comments at the dump.
There were a couple threads on this topic (America Speaks meetings) the other day that I looked at where PTBL2 had posted. Those were bemoaning the origin as a bunch of right wing SSI bashing folk. One had a link to the workbook they used. (PDF file )
I really am short on time but may get a chance to find a couple links later.
Anyone with time it would be worth the effort.

When the average person works 3-5 months out of the year just to pay his/her tax bill, I can see why some would call that slavery. I'm not quite sure I'd go that far, but have no real argument against it.
what is slavery is that a very small percentage of the population supports the entire country. IIRC, there are about 120-130M workers... About 1/2 of which pay taxes. 22M work for gov'ts... so that puts the burden on ~40M people (math not verified) to support 300M total population.
