Title: What I learned being close to the media
Post by: SSG Snuggle Bunny on June 23, 2010, 05:57:54 PM
We did our thing yesterday and a number of print and broadcast journalists were on hand.

Two prime observations:

1) They did not understand there was a difference between the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard. Nor could they get it through their skulls that The Adjuatant General (TAG) came through the ranks in the AF but in his ofice of TAG he held command over the Army and Air sides collectively and that there were separate commanders for those 2 branches that reported to him.

2) They could not/would not accept the input that the readiness centers were paid for from trust funds not general budget funds ergo the money had been appropriated well before current economic times hit. The only thing that occurred specifically in reference to the new construction was a bill by the legislature to authorize the expenditure. Despite repeated explanations the local paper printed was is essentially an error in fact that funding would be controversial because other states were closing armories due to a lack of general funding availability.

Now, I do not expect Average Joe to know this crap but I do expect those who are supposed to report to be at least somewhat familiar with their subject matter but even then they should report facts as they are explained.

Very illuminating and a little frustrating.

It's hard to explain to anyone something complicated/complex in a few minutes and get them to get it right when trying to relay it to others who have no clue.

I go through the same thing in my community when I'm trying to explain what our MUD (Municipal Utility District) does and does not do.

Any time I have ever been even remotely involved with something that the "news" has picked up on they have always, every single time, ****ed up the story. Every. Single. Time. (to borrow a wee willie)

My wife hates watching the news with me. I :bs2flag: constantly and it irks her to no end, especially those times when I prove I'm right.  :innocent:

I think that the problem within the media lies in the fact that the vast majority of them have NEVER served in the military. Had they done so, it would be easier for them to understand and perhaps they wouldn't mis-report things like they do. Then there's the journalistic bias, which typically leans left. Whatever happened to reporting the who, what, where, when, why & how and just leaving personal opinion out of the equation??

Given your generally astute and slightly-cynical nature (For a rabbit, anyway) I am kind of surprised that you went into the encounter with such illusions about professional (*cough*) journalism in the first place.

Ya know...

...I made a conscious effort to walk in with an open mind. I figured, Hey, this are just local news people. They make their living writing about dog washes. They're probably not agenda driven.

Well, they aren't agenda driven; they're just ignorant and thick-headed.

Ain't that the truth? I stopped talking to them years ago- every time I was misquoted, and people started leaving animals at my gate (once, newborn kittens in my mailbox). I don't advertise, I don't accept donations, I don't allow people to volunteer or visit; the 'officials' know where to find me when they need me.
