Tim Scott wins nomination to become first black Republican congressman since 2003

Tim Scott is on track to become the first black Republican in Congress since 2003 -- and the first from the South since Reconstruction -- after beating one of the biggest names in South Carolina politics to win a Republican congressional nomination.

It was a victory for conservative Republican insurgents and a sign of the changing of the guard in the South: Scott, a member of the South Carolina state House, defeated Paul Thurmond, son of the late Sen. Strom Thurmond, who retired from the Senate at age 100 in 2003. Thurmond ran for president in 1948 on a segregationist platform.

A member of the Charleston County Council, the younger Thurmond had the backing of much of South Carolina's GOP establishment. Two Republicans who represented the coastal Carolina district in Congress, Arthur Ravenel and Thomas Hartnett, endorsed him. So did several of the GOP hopefuls whom he and Scott eliminated in the primary election earlier this month. Among those throwing their support to Thurmond was another South Carolina legacy: Carroll Campbell, namesake son of a former governor.

Scott had national conservative support. Sarah Palin endorsed him, as did the anti-tax Club for Growth.

Heads should be exploding in the socialist world. It's a good thing that Palin has NO influence or standing in politics.

I wonder why it's such a big deal that he's the first black Republican in... all of 7 years... Strikes me as odd.

I've had a "Palin for President" bumper sticker on my truck for about a year now.

I think it's a bigger deal as to who he beat. I thought the name Thurmond was golden in SC.

I agree with that, which is why I find the headline, and frankly the first paragraph, odd.

WTH?  I love JC Watts.

They are so racist, the only acceptable black person is a race baiting black person like Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson. Get back on the plantation Tim Scott, don't you know your place?!?

The hillbilly racist that I am, I would have voted for Condi in a heartbeat. I'm also a knuckle dragging neanderthal when it comes to gender equality. And to prove it, I will vote for Palin if she runs.

Ssssssssshhhh!! Don't tell the other side. I don't want to spoil my image for them.

This is why the language of the politically correct has changed - throughout the 80's up to the early 2000s we were supposed to be 'color blind' - where race should have no bearing on the character of a person..

Then it became 'color conscious' where we are supposed to respect and make provisions for a person's race.. unless that race happens to be Caucasian.

Then suddenly 'Hispanic' became a race when all it is is in reality is a subset based on geography and a prevalent language.

Anyway - I think the change in Political Correctness is to try to influence people politically into thinking that conservatives who are not concerned about race are racists because of it.

Indeed, hispanics range from blue eyed blonds descended from the all european Spanish to Pure American Indian to black Africans descended from Spanish slaves. The Indians are, mostly, descended fron Siberian Mongol types. With some European touches from proto-europeans who seem to have reached the Americas before the glacier started to retreat. The rest are "melting pot people" just like the VAST majority of us.

I am pleased that the "old guard" was beaten, and, frankly, the man's skin color has no special signifance to me except in a crowd of TEA Party fans, he's a little easier to find at a distance.

For the most part, Blacks and Hispanics are a warring clan. They will never be brothers in a class struggle.

For the most part, you mean SOCIALIST Blacks and SOCIALIST Hispanics. Individuals whom are CONSERVATIVE or LIBERTARIAN of any race generally have no "clan" attributes. I am not splitting hairs, as I'm not one to be PC, but I AM being exact in my description here.

Yeah. The brother in da hood has no love lost for the homie in the barrio.

As to race, that is one of the things that the DUmmy's never understood. I didn't/don't hate obama because of his race but because of his socialist values.

If any of you have watched Gangland on the History channel, you would know the blacks and hispanics are always feuding...even when they land in prison.

Heads are not only exploding on the left but with the established RINO controlled Repub party. She is making a fool out of the beltway DC Eastern established Republican elites, and they are scared to death of her. She is exactly what the Republican party needs to defeat Obummer in 012.

Live in any big city in the south and you'll know it. The only time they unite is when a white policeman has to shoot one in the line of duty. Then all the sudden it's, We stand behind our brown (or black) brothers to denounce, blah blah blah. That unity usually lasts a day or 2 or until one or the other shoots one of their new brothers, then it's the SOS again.
