The goodie bag from hell at the SF Zoo
Edited on Tue Jun-22-10 08:53 PM by Liberal_in_LA
click on the link to see a pic of the cards included in the goodie bag. The 'old maid' cards included a 'jim crow' card and a card with an actual pic of what was considered an 'old maid' back inthe day - lady with cat.
The goodie bag from hell at the SF Zoo
We got these "Old Maid" cards as part of the party favor package provided by the San Francisco Zoo -- a package that included stickers, a pencil, a pad of paper and some other animal-themed ... stuff.
Now, I admit that the zoo birthday party sounds appealing. You provide the money, and the zoo provides the rest -- everything from pizza to cake to party favors. You basically show up and they throw you a party. Awesome.
My only problem is the "Old Maid" party favor. We've talked before about the evils of the goodie bag, but this one truly takes the cake.
If the zoo is going to lock parents into a special birthday package and not permit them to hand out their own favors, the least the place could do is make sure the toy giveaways aren't racist throwbacks from a sad era. Did no one at the zoo even look at this game? Or if they did look, did they simply not care?

Jesus, if they weren't bitching about SOMETHING, I guess...

I think the term "old maid" has been outed as a polite way of calling a woman a lesbian back in the old days. :evillaugh:

So if we want to be technical than that subject matter could be considered anti-gay and anti-woman according to the new rules.

I think so, but I'm surprised the DUmmie didn't pick that up.

Geez they see something racist in EVERYTHING!!!

Geez they see something racist in EVERYTHING!!!
Its how they avoid conversation - anything/anyone they don't want to hear/see is racist.
-
I'm guessing they're missing the whole Zoo/animal theme thing. Kids old enough to play Ole Maid don't know about or give a crap about racism or stereotyping.
-
Once again, they prove that they're not happy unless they're not happy, and attempting to make others equally unhappy.

Cheney and Rove are everywhere.

Liberalism in a nutshell.

I think we could think of an even worse goodie bag for the DUmmies.

On fire on the front porch?

Even the SFgate readers are rolling their eyes.....
Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, June Cleaver is not a Christ figure, but you can only expect a vigorously ignorant person to not have a problem with "Jim Crow", regardless of the picture.
Racism is where you find it.
Since the card isn't a caricature of an African American, it probably isn't.
Maybe it's just a crow called Jim.
Get over it!!

I like the way you think! :pokingpoop:

Heh! Me and my Buds did that to our English Teacher in the 8th grade! Problem was, we laughed so hard after her little poodle tramped around in it and tracked it all over her carpet, she knew who we were!
I got an "F" that semester! Did I mention her carpet was a white Persian rug? Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!! Ah the memories of childhood!
ETA:
Oh yeah, she was one of those unmarried "old maids", and looked the part!

Exactly. We called my 13 year old in, had her look at just the pictures of the cards, and asked her if she saw anything offensive or that would make someone mad. Eventually, we told her what we meant...she had never even heard of Jim Crow. :lmao:

Liberals hate "Leave it to Beaver" with a passion. Same for "Ozzie and Harriet", "Donna Reed show" and "Father Knows Best".
Those shows portrayed a time in America when the family consisted of one man and one woman. Their kids were legitimate. Everyone loved their country and were God fearing folk.

Am I crazy, or does the old maid resemble Elanor Roosevelt?(http://library.thinkquest.org/TQ0312172/eleanor%20roosevelt.jpg)
