The top commander in Afghanistan, Gen. Stanley McChrystal, has been summoned to the White House to explain biting and unflattering remarks he made to a freelance writer about President Barack Obama and others in the Obama administration.
The face-to-face comes as pundits are already calling for McChrystal to resign for insubordination.
McChrystal has been instructed to fly from Kabul to Washington today to attend Obama’s regular monthly security team meeting tomorrow at the White House.
An administration official says McChrystal was asked to attend in person rather than by secure video teleconference, “where he will have to explain to the Pentagon and the commander in chief his quotes about his colleagues in the piece.â€
Both Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, have spoken with McChrystal. Capt. John Kirby, a spokesman for Mullen, said “the chairman spoke to General McChrystal last night and expressed his deep disappointment with the article and with the comments expressed therein.â€
McChrystal and his top aides appeared to let their guard down during a series of interviews and visits with Michael Hastings, a freelance writer for the magazine Rolling Stone.
The article, titled “The Runaway General,†appears in the magazine later this week. It contains a number of jabs by McChrystal and his staff aimed not only at the President but at Vice President Biden, special envoy Richard Holbrooke, Karl Eikenberry, the ambassador to Afghanistan, and others.
McChrystal described his first meeting with Obama as disappointing and said that Obama was unprepared for the meeting.
National Security Advisor Jim Jones is described by a McChrystal aide as a “clown†stuck in 1985.

I hope you post a synopsis of the high points.

Well we already know his politics if he does...he voted for Obama.
Rich...yes if anything jumps out at me I'll post it.
-
From the Article:
Even though he had voted for Obama,
McChrystal and his new commander in
chief failed from the outset to connect.
The general first encountered Obama
a week after he took office, when the
president met with a dozen senior military
officials in a room at the Pentagon
known as the Tank. According to sources
familiar with the meeting, McChrystal
thought Obama looked “uncomfortable
and intimidated†by the roomful of
military brass. Their first one-on-one
meeting took place in the Oval Office four
months later, after McChrystal got the
Afghanistan job, and it didn’t go much
better. “It was a 10-minute photo op,â€
says an adviser to McChrystal. “Obama
clearly didn’t know anything about him,
who he was. Here’s the guy who’s going
to run his ****ing war, but he didn’t
seem very engaged. The Boss was pretty
disappointed.â€
-
Hi,
If he does that will then create yet another controversy. McCrystal voted for Obama so he would have even more credibility if he spoke out against him. They will likely try to muzzle him with the threat that his retirement pay could be affected. At the same time Fox News could more than make up for that.
How about McCrystal saying, "I see the light!" and telling all what is really going on.
The military is BO's biggest fear in my opinion. He knows full well the day may well come when they walk into his office and say the party is over, time for you to go.

Even though he had voted for Obama,...that ain't good.
, McChrystal thought Obama looked “uncomfortable
and intimidated†by the roomful of
military brass. ....Obama was at his best sans teleprompter.
“It was a 10-minute photo op,â€....standard OP for Obama.
but he didn’t seem very engaged.....again, Standard Obama OP.
The Boss was pretty disappointed.â€....you don't say. Well, so are we but we knew it from the start.
My respect for Gen. McCrystal just went down several notches.

From the Article:
Ouch!
While not appropriate for McChrystal(or his aide) to say to an interviewer, anyone who was paying attention when McChrytal took over, knows that he didn't meet with Obama for months and I believe it was reported that the meeting was very short.
We ALL know how fond Obama is of the "photo op with no substance". Heck, he just did it with the BP officials last week. They got what? 20 minutes with him?
Obama and his merry band of idiots bring this on themselves. Hard to have any sympathy for the disrespect.
I've had Fox News on since 6, while I've been working this morning and this has been all over it for the last 3 hours. At the end of Fox and Friends, they were reading emails. One was from a guy, who said in effect..."McChrystal makes some inappropriate remarks and he's immediately on a plane back to DC to "answer" to Obama....yet it took Obama almost 60 days to talk to BP. Way to get priorities straight." Most comments were quite negative.

He's not the only one who did. Generals by the name of Casey and Chiraelli did too.
-
They may well force him out but the cost might be bigger then Eurkel could possibly imagine
-
I can't believe a general in our Armed Forces would actually vote for a Communist. Maybe McChrystal does need to go.
Many did...
I can't state that he should "go" simply because of who he voted for. What matters is how he conducts himself in his role. If he is the best of the best, then I don't care if he sleeps curled up in the fetal position sucking his thumb while wearing a bonnet and adult diapers surrounding by cabbage patch dolls.... Just do his job and do it WELL.
-
My respect for Gen. McCrystal just went down several notches.
Ditto. About everyone else in the Army who wasn't already carrying a Democrat ricebowl knew exactly what Obama was, months before the election, and this dumbshit still claims he voted for Zero? Then compounds the obvious lack of judgment involved in that grave error by running off at the mouth to an outsider? WTF, over?
There's certainly a lot of truth in the substance of the comments, in fact there's a lot more to be said than what he did let out. For instance, the whole deal with the political team (Obama, State, and the ambassador) trying to sell Karzai down the river on the Afghan election is probably an unrecoverable unforced error that dooms any chance of success in any politically-acceptable timeframe, particularly when combined with already-programmed withdrawal.
But true or not, comments like that normally result in at least a 50-50 chance of getting fired, unless the President thinks the guy is the only one who can deliver. Policy aside, that's really as it should be, all up and down the chain of command. Having a subordinate undercut his superior is totally unacceptable behavior at any level from fire team leader to CINC.

From the article:
By far the most crucial
– and strained – relationship
is between McChrystal and
Eikenberry, the U.S. ambassador.
According to those close
to the two men, Eikenberry – a retired
three-star general who served in Afghanistan
in 2002 and 2005 – can’t stand that
his former subordinate is now calling the
shots. He’s also furious that McChrystal,
backed by NATO’s allies, refused to put
Eikenberry in the pivotal role of viceroy
in Afghanistan, which would have
made him the diplomatic equivalent of
the general. The job instead went to British
Ambassador Mark Sedwill – a move
that effectively increased McChrystal’s
influence over diplomacy by shutting out
a powerful rival. “In reality, that position
needs to be filled by an American for it to
have weight,†says a U.S. official familiar
with the negotiations.
The relationship was further strained
in January, when a classified cable that
Eikenberry wrote was leaked to The New
York Times. The cable was as scathing as
it was prescient. The ambassador offered
a brutal critique of McChrystal’s strategy,
dismissed President Hamid Karzai as
“not an adequate strategic partner,†and
cast doubt on whether the counterinsurgency
plan would be “sufficient†to deal
with Al Qaeda. “We will become more
deeply engaged here with no way to extricate
ourselves,†Eikenberry warned,
“short of allowing the country to descend
again into lawlessness and chaos.â€
McChrystal and his team were blindsided
by the cable. “I like Karl, I’ve
known him for years, but they’d never
said anything like that to us before,†says
McChrystal,
who adds that he felt “betrayedâ€
by the leak. “Here’s one that covers
his flank for the history books. Now if
we fail, they can say, ‘I told you so.’ â€

I can't believe anyone in the military would vote for 0bama, especially given the things he's said about them. The brass seems incredibly disconnected from the regular guys. There should be a requirement they spend a certain amount of time each year, or even each couple of years living/working with grunts and NCO's.

That's because at their level they are just as politically motivated as the Congress Critters.
You don't get to that level no matter who you are without knowing how to play the Beltway Game by the Beltway rules.

Exactly. All general officer promotions are with 'Advice and consent' by name, not just approval of a generic promotion list, and if a promotable colonel has an enemy in the Senate he will never get his star. Thanks to 'Senatorial privilege' it only takes one to kill the promotion. Once they get the first star, many generals therefore cultivate friendships and alliances with Senators to further their careers, becoming increasingly political and moving away from being pure Soldiers.

I'm curious as to whether this is an effort on McChrystal's part to highlight a number of combat issues in Afghanistan.
First, I wonder why this entire episode was the result of an interview granted to "Rolling Stone", which is an obvious left-wing publication.
Second, whether he voted for Obama or not, what I hear about McChrystal is that he is pretty much a "soldier's soldier", and is very well respected by his troops. He was a SPECOPS guy in Iraq, as I understand, and a highly effective commander in the past.
I'm wondering if McChrystal hasn't elected to "fall on his sword" in an effort to highlight the incompetence of the Obama administration's handling of the rules of engagement, the reticence in supplying needed troops last year, and other tactical restrictions that are coming from DC. Specifically his obvious disdain for both Obama's ambassador to Afghanistan, as well as the "Special Envoy", both of whom seem dedicated to undermining the elected leadership of the country, and encouraging an adversarial relationship with the countries diplomatic corps.
I suspect that there is much more here than what we are hearing from the press......

If this is supposed to be "Falling on his sword," he's doing a remarkably obtuse and generally shitty job of it.
-
There's a poll on Fox News.... http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2010/06/22/decide-happen-gen-mcchrystal/#content
It's been above 60% to " 'not fire' McChrystal, that he's apologized, and move on with leading the troops" all morning.
The comments are what are the most interesting. Granted Fox leans much more conservative, but there is a variety of comments.
-

Perhaps it appears so from what we know, however, McChrystal is dealing with both managing the war, and appears to have been forced into also dealing with an adversarial diplomatic situation in-country as well, both rooted in the same lack of expertise being manifested in DC.

Well, since he voted for Zer0, I guess McChrystal has a case of buyer's remorse. Don't know what to say about all these assclowns who put that :loser: in charge of our country except SHAME ON YOUALL. :fuelfire:

I think apologizing was a bad move.

Baghdad Bob Gibbs is holding a press conference. I think that the tone of the questions won't leave much choice than for McChrystal to be replaced.
-
I can't believe a general in our Armed Forces would actually vote for a Communist. Maybe McChrystal does need to go.
I cant believe anyone here didn't know that, the only reason he got the Afghanistan gig is because he was oDUmbf***'s lapdog. And now even he turns to bite that hand, I love it. :-)
-
I think apologizing was a bad move.
Me too. I am getting weary of everyone saying something, and then apologizing for it afterwards. Just say it and stick with it.
-
My son (Navy vet) thinks the general "fell on his sword" for the troops.
Said bad mouthing the CinC is against the UCMJ, and thinks he will either be court-martialled or forced to retire.
He also said McChrystal shouldn't have apologized either, because it won't make any difference to his career.

Several points here:
--WTF is ANYONE in uniform doing talking to anyone from Rolling Stone? Seriously?
--Incredibly poor form for a general officer to discuss who he voted for.
--Wasn't it the liberals who kept telling us that, "dissent is patriotic?"
--Obama can't be bothered to talk to McCrystal for 4 MONTHS regarding additional troops, but the second he hears anything negative reported about himself, he hauls him back the NEXT DAY?
--Falling on his sword or not, McCrystal screwed the pooch badly, and needs to go.

This is part of the reason why my son thought he purposely did it. And to get people to realize "that Obama doesn't give two shits about the military"....(that was a quote from son)
-
IMHO this isn't him falling on his sword.
This is the typical case of Liberal "gotcha" journalism...and a very crappy job of handling this embedded reporter by McChrystal's PAO.
It's no even the first time Rolling Stone has burned the Army with one of it's "free-lance" reporters. They screwed 2nd Cav while we were in Iraq.
We (the military and PAO specifically) fall for this damn trap every time...we give these idiots complete access to "the boss" or "the troops" in a futile attempt to make the media like us.
And the reporters play right along....acting like they are our buddies...willing to hang out with us...shoot the shit...even go out to our forward bases to see how we live.
This reporter got everyone involved to drop their guard and open their mouth...and his story wrote itself.
It appears that the PA Officer never even made one attempt to proof the story or glance at it before it went out. It's an even worse failure if the guy DID read it and blessed off on it being released.
My job is to make sure this kind of crap...whether uttered by a 4 Star General or a PFC doesn't get put in print.
First thing I teach the soldiers in my Media on The Battlefield classes...when you're with a reporter...NOTHING is off the record.
This story is what can happen if you don't take that to heart.
If McChrystal gets the axe over this...the second one standing in the unemployment line behind him is the PA officer who worked for him.

I heard the same. But the PAO isn't responsible for the stuff that the General himself said to the reporter.

Makes a person wonder, don't it? Of course we should never forget Ret. general Wesley Clark.
I firmly believe this is a major reason Lord Zero and the libs want gays to openly serve in the military. They will be given special promotional treatment to avoid the "homophobe" label. As the gays move up through the ranks, this nation will eventually have a military brass that would rather perform fellatio on our enemies than kill them.

That's a bit of a stretch IMO.
Oh no doubt but I have to wonder - why would a soldier want to openly wear the "I am gay" patch on their shoulder.
What does being gay have to do with serving in the military? Unless they are after special treatment such as birthing preferences. My understanding is a reason man/woman or husband & wife are not allowed to serve together in combat and other situations because when under fire, the mate or "partner" may favor each other instead of the other soldiers when commanded thus jeopardizing the overall mission.
I don't want to hijack this thread so I will say nothing further on this matter.
I just read this on Drudge: "FLASH: According to an unnamed source 'Gen. McChrystal has submitted his resignation' - Joe Klein on Rick Sanchez, CNN... Developing..."
No actual link yet.

That's a bit of a stretch IMO.
Perhaps... but if you look at the tenacity of the left, it would make a certain amount of sense. "They" have been planning and executing for almost 100 years, slowly taking us away from the path that lead to our freedoms to begin with. They are patient, almost methodical at times. DADT may be viewed as just one more step in the rung of neutering the military completely.... potentially over the course of decades.

Ug! MacArthur anyone?
Of course the left will use this to denigrate and berate the military and those that REALLY support this war, like President Bush.
However, I firmly support the chain of command and NO LOOSE LIPS! If the troops are being unnecessarily endangered, then there are channels to deal with it. But I am torn because 0bama *IS* disconnected from this war. Maybe McChrystal became so frustrated he just vented. Personally, I would now lose trust in him and he probably shredded support of those in Washington that barely supported him and his policies if they ever supported him at all. Like Biden...

Hell, it's been going on since THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR!!!
This article from POLITICO (http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0610/38852.html) discusses just that:
..."But it may actually be more comparable to a more chronic presidential leadership crisis — Abraham Lincoln’s dilemma during the Civil War, when he was forced to repeatedly reshuffle his general staff in the face of vacillating public opinion, insubordination and, above all else, uncertainty about how best to win a bloody war he couldn’t afford to lose."
This is a fairly good article and I did not realize how messed up this war is.
Looks like 0bama needs another day on the golf course and a White House rock concert.
-
When faced with no support or very little from your CIC and now it looks like some backstabbing as well from his former boss ,what's a person to do when the Chain of Command is broken? Looks like a No Win situation for McChrystal no matter what path he chose. If I didn't know better it soundslike they wanted it to happen at the WH just so they can justify thier actions.

RECIPIE FOR DISASTER
Take a bunch of the Brass so frustrated they are having a collective nervous breakdown.
Mix in one reporter who is sympathetic to their needs and tells the Brass what they dearly need to hear. Becoming an ear for them to vent to, agree with them and UNDERSTAND their problems.
Add in a few drinks just to loosen up with the fellow think alike Brass, include the New Friend who has been trust worthy in the past.
As long as the reporter remains silent and just records their conversation, the Brass soon forgets he is there.
Fold in more drinks and or more bad news about the state of the Country or the new body count for that month, bad family news from home, personal problems and exhaustion, physical and mental.
Bake in 900 degree oven for a month or so. Remove from oven and apologise for the mess in the pan.
-
You know, if Obama was going to fire the general, he could have done that over the telephone(radio/whatever).
I think it's all about the Big Zero's ego. He wants to cuss the general out face to face, show him who's boss. The Big Zero must look down his nose at the underlings.
Que the Mussy-leany picture.
-
Nawww history says Commanding Generals need to be recalled home, dressed down then fired/resignations accepted to look tough and in charge. Since zero is all about appearance he'll do what his predecessors did in the same situation.
ETA: Obambie & McChrystal are meeting in a half hour.

No word from the 0bumbler yet. Are they trying to get the TOTUS ready, or are they just waiting to interrupt Rush's show?

Amazing how the media had no problem with Current and former Generals saying things like what McChrystal did and worse about President Bush.
GEN Shinseki...MG Rhamey...GET McCaffery...all over the MSM bahing the President's war strategy...and especially critical of the 2007 Surge.

Diane Sawyer is back on and said the "White House is saying that McChrystal resigned".
Obama is on. He just said McChrystal "resigned" as command.

He will probably be forced to retire, IF he's lucky. It would be the same thing as a resignation, in all essence.

I believe it goes as Relieved from Command, and a Retired Commission. Meaning he ain't in the Army no more. But I could be wrong.
-
I would guess it does not mean he actually resigned his commission, rather that he resigned the position rather than be relieved for cause. I'd expect him to retire speedily.

Doesn't sound like he's resigned his commission.
Yet....
Will he be brought up on UCMJ charges?
-
Somewhere right now...I have a feeling that GEN(ret) David McKiernan is smiling right now.
-
I don't think the US has actually court-martialed a general officer since Billy Mitchell, deb, there really isn't any realistic chance of that happening. The closest he could possibly come to UCMJ action would be an Article 15 (And the information released so far hasn't produced a decent case for even that), which is a slap on the wrist compared to being booted from command.

If I remember correctly...wasn't there a 4 Star Wing Wiper that was recalled to active duty and Courts Martialed over perjuring himself over an affair he had with a staffer?
I thought they dropped him a star over that one.

I think he got a 15 and an administrative rank reduction (Service Secretaries can determine the highest rank in which an individual 'honorably served' and change the grade downward, paying retirement on that lower grade; a rarely invoked power, except in cases of disgraceful conduct by senior officers), rather than a CM.

The worst I've seen was when they dropped the Vice Director of the J-Staff from 2 Star to Colonel.

Working our way downwards in rank, I very well remember the SMA Gene McKinney incident.
Sexual harassment - huge numbers of complaints - resulting in an Article 32 hearing and a CM. His Wiki article says he was acquitted of those charges, but was convicted on "Obstruction of Justice" charges, reduced to Master Sergeant and reprimanded.
This guy wound up retiring in his former SMA grade due to a law which has subsequently been amended.
I saw this guy in action shortly before I retired. At the time he was 1AD CSM. You would be hard-pressed to find a bigger piece of shit.

Last time I saw him was last October at Ft. Myer during one of the Year of The NCO celebrations.
At one point while I was in D.C. he had a civilian job at the Pentagon as well.
-
He was a product of the Carter years of 'De-selection' of capable mid-grade NCOs, when so many guys with potential voted with their feet, and far too many of the guys that stayed career NCOs did so because they were at least dimly aware they could never make it on the outside. A leavening of fantastic, dedicated guys stayed in, but risk-taking and honest reporting was, shall we say, not a highly-rewarded behavior. 'Way too often dumbshits with big mouths, great PT scores, and little detectable higher brain function stayed in and became the senior NCO cohort from which that sucker came.

I would think he'd be hanging his head in shame and staying the hell away from NCO celebrations. OTOH, he would make a fine example of what NOT to be and if he were key note speaker, maybe he could talk about his transgressions and what impact those had on his career and his life.
And let's hope he's keeping his hands to himself while working as a civvie.

Funny, that sounds like a lot of the senior enlisted I encountered towards the end of the 1990's.

mid 80s and beyond......... I always shook my head at the nonsense that some Chiefs (E7) and above did. In a way, I'm glad that I never became part of that "brotherhood". I don't think I could have ever turned my head away from their misdeeds. I was a far from perfect Sailor, but those folks were ridiculous.

There are a LOT of faces that have suddenly popped up at military and Pentagon functions that were absent for the previous 8 years.
Just sayin...
