As oil spews in Gulf, BP chief at UK yacht race today

LONDON —  In what one environmentalist described as "yet another public relations disaster" for embattled energy giant BP, CEO Tony Hayward took time off today to attend a glitzy yacht race around England's Isle of Wight.

As social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook lit up with outrage, BP spokespeople rushed to defend Hayward, who has drawn withering criticism as the public face of BP's halting efforts to stop the worst oil spill in U.S. history.

In all fairness, if our President can golf, hold concerts and otherwise party back in Chicago during this crisis -- then why the heck can't Hayward go out on his yacht?   It's not like he is yachting in the Gulf or something right?

 :whatever:

Hell, why not go sailing. Obama claims he has been on top of this from day one..... keeping down efforts to fix the problem is more like it.

White House criticises BP CEO over yacht race

(Reuters) - The White House renewed its sharp criticism of BP (BP.L) (BP.N) CEO Tony Hayward after he attended a yacht race off the English coast on Saturday as his company struggles to plug its huge Gulf of Mexico oil leak.

"This has just been part of a long line of PR gaffes and mistakes," White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel said in an interview taped for ABC's "This Week" week program, referring to Hayward.

Sheila Williams, a spokeswoman for the energy giant, said Hayward attended the boat race at the Isle of Wight, saying he was spending some time with his teenage son after devoting most of the past two months away from family.

Obama administration officials and President Barack Obama himself have been harshly critical of Hayward over some public statements he has made since the spill began in Apri

Did they expect him to be on the Gulf, getting in the way of those that may actually manage to fix the problem?   :whatever: Other than that, what can the guy do?  Pull an Obama and yell at a bunch of people?  Take calls from stockholders and apologize personally?  What can he possibly do to help the problem?

If I mess something up at work, I may end up working late or going in on a weekend to take care of it...but my boss and my CEO have no reason to be sitting in their offices until I get done.   :thatsright:

Obama's the C in C, the Navy's not there to remove the wreckage from around the valve body and well pipe that's leaking. The Navy has done heavy slavage in up to 17,000 feet, this is 5,000. Suspend the Jones act, still not done , this failure compounds the damages on the estuaries and tidal wetlands, where the sealife renews itself! Still has not approved the boom equipment available, but unused in storage. Still declines to take leadership and suspend the "enviornmental" regulations that serve no purpose except t9 delay delay delay, and were WAY past the point that this is acceptable.

He SAYS "Day one..." "All hands on deck..." then has Quail eggs and caviar apatisers and Kolby beef $150 per ld) main courses raises funds, plays golf, shoots hoops, tries to restart Cap (thx and trade (tax still more), suspends drilling in the Gulf asgainst the "experts" advice, then lies about it, an act that is DAILY increasing oil production jobs all the while fantesizing about "green jobs" that don't exist , power sources that cannot exist (unless you are fool enough to think Newton was wrong, and pepetuasl moton is viable as an energy source) and is totally disingenuous about nuclear power. Asks for ANOTHER $150,000,000,000 IN "STIMULUS MONEY AND WANTS more and more FEDERAL REGULATIONS WHEN IT SHOULD BE OBVIOUS THAT PLANNED ECONOMIES don't work! The late unlamented USSR had planned economies that had city dwellers waiting on line twice a month for their rancid chicken at the butchers! I

but I guess it is too much to demand COMPETETS from Obama, isn'y it"? ASfter all, how can we expect that the poor fellow do his job rather than spend America into oblivien!

Hayward was replaced yesterday ..... really no reason for him not to go to a yacht race.

Obama hasn't been replaced, yet he was too busy to talk personally with any BP officials until Wednesday.

BP clarified on Saturday that Tony Hayward was still in charge of the energy giant and its Gulf cleanup operations a day after another executive told Sky News that Hayward was relinguishing day-to-day spill duties, the New York Times reports.

According to USA Today, he's still CEO.

I saw one of the first articles yesterday when it happened, and the chairman of the board was quoted in the article that he was going to be taking over from Hayward....but then the article just kind of disappeared and there wasn't anything again for several hours....

Weird.

I thought Obama said he was in charge and BP was doing/would do whatever Obama demanded.

So why not demand Hayward not go to the event? He can make BP cough a $20 billion publicity stunt why not this?

Surely Obama could have phoned in his instructions from the 13th green.

The impression I got from the BP release on Hayward was that he was being released from his duties relating to the spill. In other words yell at this new guy instead so the old one can do what he does normally.

Any day now....

He is still overall in charge/ responsible - there is a new full time operations guy in the Guld just for the spill. Too bad "Bob" didn't win.
