PSA: If you hit a cyclist, the last thing they want to hear is: "I didn't see you"

That might be acceptable if it's night and the cyclist isn't illuminated. Or if there's some obstruction that obscures vision.

But if it's broad daylight on a straight road and the cyclist is only doing 13 mph and you just back out of your driveway and clip the guy because you weren't paying attention . . . DO NOT LET THE FIRST WORDS OUT OF YOUR MOUTH BE: "I didn't see you."

Here's what the cyclist wants to hear:

"I'm sorry

Are you ok?

I am so sorry.

What can I do for you?"

Even if the cyclist is not injured and his bike isn't damaged, offer something. Anything. Just something to compensate the guy for scaring the living shit out of him.

And yes the cyclist might yell at you. That's a normal reflexive reaction to almost being killed or severely injured. Get over it and don't take it personally.

This rant may or may not be inspired by the brain-dead mini-van mama that backed out of her driveway at (ADDRESS DELETED) at 8:03 AM this morning.

Pardon the interruption.

This scum bag is riding around town looking to get hit and then bilk the innocent driver out of his/her hard earned money.

Don't deny that it's your intent. People like you should be shot.

50. No physical injuries, just scared the hell out of me

20+ plus years of cycling in traffic and first time I've made contact with an auto since I was 15 and ran a stop sign.

Self-medicating right now.

So you stole money from the person and went and bought drugs?

53. That's good to hear.   Updated at 8:35 AM

Don't overdose! The "cure" could be worse than the disease!

I don't know. Sounds like a good idea to me.

2. And clearly didn't see you

That's what I'd say if I hit or almost hit someone.

OMG, I didn't see you.

And then of course, I am so sorry, are you okay, can I help you in any way.

23. I might not say it at all

I might say OMG I didn't see you, are you okay, do you need an ambulance, can I take you somewhere, do you need to come in and sit down, do you need some water, oh look you scraped your arm can I get you a band-aid,

and never get around to "I'm sorry".

People are different. As long as she didn't kick you in the nuts and tell you to ride better, I'd say you've got nothing to complain about.

13. I saw a cyclist hit yesterday, and it was obvious that the driver didn't see the bicyclist.

The driver obviously didn't know what had happened, but could tell he'd hit something and stopped before actually running over the bicyclist.

The driver was turning out of a driveway onto a one-way street and the bicyclist was riding the wrong way, next to the curb, and likely couldn't be seen from the driver's side of the pickup.

I stopped and gave my card to both and told both that I had had a clear view of the entire thing.

My evaluation is that both were at fault, but the bicyclist most of all.

And the pickup's driver was a cop in uniform

I'll testify for the person who gives me the biggest bribe.

48. Ordinarily I'd agree but the incident in question took place at 8:03 AM

Of course if the person in question had one speck of decency she would have gotten my address and left a cooler full of the stuff on my front porch waiting for me when I got home from work.

What the **** is wrong with people?

Keep talking and prove without a doubt how big of a scum bag you really are.

2. Thank God. You didn't do it on purpose then.
3. You mean you didn't do it on purpose then?
4. Well, duh!
5. What the **** does that mean?
6. Are you ****ing blind?

When I was twelve or so I almost got hit by a car when I was riding my bike.  I was crossing the street and didn't see him coming. He braked in time, made sure I was okay, yelled a bit, then lectured me on safe riding.  I didn't recognize him, but it ends up that he was the father of one of my friends, and he called my mom the moment he got home.  I got in a bit of trouble for that one.   :p

Maybe that's why he rides a bike. Wonder if he lost his drivers license for life?

And yes I may backhand your asshole mouth a good one if you start screaming and hollering about how I "owe" you for you trying to scam me. It's a normal reflexive action decent  people have to irrational fools. You see DUmmie if the cops are going to come, which they will after I call them, then you WILL have a wound from your failed fall. Your meth teeth will make sure of that.

If any of you happen to run across spudman.....back back across him before you get out of your vehicle.......that's so when the police arrive and they ask you "What happened", you can tell them, "I don't know. I just got here myself."

Yeah - a certain significant percentage of people would make sure he snuffed it, 'cause a dead cyclist is a lot cheaper than a disabled cyclist.  Just sayin'.

I did get hit by a truck on my bike when I was about 8. I thought I could cross the road before the truck got there. Not so. Luckily, I wasn't too terribly injured. I got a stern talking to, but my parents were so happy I was ok, and felt so bad for me that I didn't get in trouble. It took me a little while to get back on that bike. The poor guy that hit me felt horrible, but it wasn't his fault. I never made that mistake again.

as we're being nice to libbers, I'll refrain somewhat, but.............

I'm curious though Sol, have you ever had an ass whippin' in your entire life? Most libbers have been kept from so brutal a punishment. Says volumes on why they think they can get away with everything, up to and including murder.

If I'd have biked out into traffic, Dad woulda had my hide and more than likely ixnayed the bike for some time! But, then again, I was taught you had to pay for your screw ups.

I had a couple of spankings as a kid. And my parents were very ticked off, and I got lectured about it. NOt that I needed it. I totally learned my lesson as I was flying through the air and skidded across the pavement. My parents (I guess) chose not to spank me that time. It took me a while to get back on a bike again.

I doubt seriously that Dad would have whacked me if I had been hit by a car, yet he would have made it completely obvious that if I wanted to ride my bike in the street, I would have the sense to look and make sure it was safe!

Hell, from the sounds of it, they prolly bought you a new bike!

Spanked? Yeah, right! No wonder libbers haven't learned there are no consequences to their actions!

We got our butts kicked! And I don't regret a single one! I grew up knowing the difference between right and wrong! Between lying and telling the truth!!! Maybe that's what's wrong with "Bummer" and the rest of your buds, they were never taught not to lie! Worse, they were taught it is how you get ahead in the world

The biggest problem I see in this country right now is the inability for parents to discipline their kids.

Do you support a child callin' the cops on dad after he/she gets a "spankin"?

Of course you do! You joined DU!

What are you even talking about? No I didn't get a new bike. No my parents didn't beat me. Yes I did get disciplined. I got spanked. Not my ass kicked. No I don't support calling the cops because someone got a spanking.  Why are you putting words in my mouth? Or assuming you have a clue about how I was raised?

Little touchy, aren't we? You won't find a single post where I "put words on your mouth". I'm speaking of the liberal philosophy. Can't you tell the diff? If not, I would suggest you're way in over yer head.

You know what would have happened if I would have called the cops cause I had my Dad discipline me? They probably would have offered to take me to the hoosegow, just to teach me a lesson!

Children, in the last 20 years have had the libs grant them a special place in the family. They now are the boss! All they have to do is threaten their parents with, "I'll call the cops on ya", and get away with anything!

Surely you being the moderate you portend, see this.

But of course, no opinion, right?

You have nothing to say about the conversation?

Not even about me puttin' words in your mouth?

Hmmmmmmm........

Tells me all I need to know.

I don't see how you can sever yourself from those at the DUmp. You have accused me of the same thing DUmpster DIvers do daily. Yet when confronted with facts, you slink off into the darkness.

All I see is: "I am not in over my head. Thanks for the concern."

Nothing at all about your accusation. Like I said, Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm
