President Obama will address the nation Tuesday night to talk about the Gulf of Mexico oil spill as the White House prepares a plan to require oil giant BP to set up an escrow account to pay for lost income to local businesses as a result of the April 20 explosion.
The 8 p.m. ET speech will take place from the White House shortly after the president returns from a two-day trip to the Gulf.
The president is expected to address efforts to contain the spill, the timeline for capturing the oil, the long-term recovery and restoration of the Gulf region and regulatory reform efforts at the Mineral Management Service
.
"This is an ongoing crisis, much like an epidemic," David Axelrod told NBC television's "Meet the Press."
The 10-15 minute speech will provide more details about a BP escrow fund the president wants established for fishers and trawlers whose livelihoods have been shot as a result of the spill. The administration wants a third-party reclamation process rather than BP managing distribution of funds.
The next day, the president will make clear in his meeting with BP Chairman Carl-Henric Svanberg and others about his expectation of BP's responsibility for caring for people affected by the spill.
"Our mission is to hold them accountable in every appropriate way," Axelrod said.
The speech comes as the Obama administration faces criticism for a slow reaction time to the Gulf spill, including the approval for the construction of barriers and assistance to the states. At the same time frustration is growing about the slow pace of the clean-up and BP's inability to stop the flow while the estim
I see he is going to spend 2 days in the Gulf? He must have thought his aide said GOLF!

Of course, I do have to wonder what The Won and Co. consider appropriate.
Good thing there's an NCIS marathon on tonight.

That would be 57 islamic states (http://atlasshrugs2000.typepad.com/atlas_shrugs/2008/05/57-islamic-stat.html). Least we forget!
-
I will make sure to miss Obama's boring BS speech. This pecker-head will go down as the worst Prez in my lifetime. Carter is a whizz kid compared to this dunce.
-
The president is expected to address efforts to contain the spill, the timeline for capturing the oil, the long-term recovery and restoration of the Gulf region and most importantly, blame former President Bush and Vice President Cheney.
Fixed for truth.
-
At least they have yet to regulate TV so much that they have to go back to just 3 networks and PBS. We still have a choice not to watch the Asshat In Chief.
-
I can't believe that vile git compared the oil spill to the 9/11 atrocity. Having only caught a little fragment on the morning news that's the only tidbit really worth mentioning.
-
Hmmm....bet Obama says "I" more than Chef says "****"..... :lmao:
bet you're right!! :lmao:

I'll propose a contest...every time he uses a personal pronoun (I, me, my), everyone takes a shot. Last person standing wins. I'm guessing that won't be more than 10 minutes in.
Christ, he's so ****ing predictable.

meh. I am gonna skip it and go to happy hour. If I want to get drunk, I might as well be drunk and happy, as opposed to drunk and pissed. Or would that be pissed and pissed?

This speech will be less about the spill and more about the need to pass cap and tax legislation to finish off the US economy.
-
Save your stocks and bonds........you're gonna need'em to wipe your butt.
He keeps speaking and my little investments keeps leaking.

Very convenient timing for the spill, eh? Even more convenient is the comedy of errors... too convenient?

I hate to sound like a :tinfoil2: but don't you think it's just way to coincidental that every safety feature on the entire system failed ... basically at the same time?

Not an awakening....I've thought it from the beginning. As I'm sure many other people have gone....Hmmmmmm?

Also coincidental is the fact that BP has been using "Beyond Petroleum" for their advertising for quite some time. They have diversified from just drilling for oil and and supplying petroleum products. As a company maybe they are better prepared to shift to other energy endeavors than other oil companies in the US.

What about the fact that BP head guy sold all his stock in the company. Petrobass oil off of Brazil is getting the drilling equipment and US money to drill ... Soro's has money in that company... HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

There are many things connected to this entire situation, that makes one go Hmmmmm.
I doubt much investigation will go on this summer by Congress....they are all to busy campaigning.
If the Congress becomes predominantly GOP, I bet we see more indepth (no pun intended) investigation than if it stays Democrat.
-
Is the investigation into the cause complete?
If not, hasn't the president just slandered BP by stating to 300M people they CAUSED the problem?
Where does he get the power to "make them pay," exactly?

According to what's been said on both O'Reilly and Hannity tonight...he DOES NOT have the power to make BP pay.

10:1 it's in the financial reform bill...

You know, I just realized something. When Obama said he was going to kick some ass, nobody realized he meant the democrat donkey.

thinking about this more... and happened to hear Beck for a few moments today.
He doesn't have the power, nor is he asking for the power... he's CLAIMING the power.

You've got a good point. BP would have been completely in their rights to tell him to get bent, and that they would respond to claims from an escrow account that they would administer. There is nothing that 0 or the congresscritters could have done to increase their obligatory liability, since any law passed would have run up against ex post facto clause. Because they caved, it sets a standard that every other company that is ever in that position will have to or run the risk of appearing not to care about people.

The highlighted is by far the most important part, IMHO... it is the nail in the coffin of the free market.
