Title: World Cup Discussion
Post by: Hawkgirl on June 12, 2010, 06:48:47 PM
So USA tied with England...thanks to a mistake by the Englishman goalie.  I predict both England and USA will advance.

Great game.

Looking forward to the Italy/Paraguay game on Monday.

Both the Brits and the US were predicted to advance.  I'm pretty happy it was a draw.

Me too...but today Slovenia and Algeria play...if either team wins....they head up to the top of the bracket with 3 points...

Just watched some of the highlights of the Germany game. Doesn't say much about a sport when you have two players get in trouble for pretending they got fouled and it hurt.

I spent the day on the boat...so didn't watch any games...The above link is useful for those of you keeping score.

I've watched some of them ....but what is that horrible buzzing-like noise that's constantly in the background during the game itself?

It's annoying, so I'm watching it without the volume at 0.... :thatsright:

I noticed that too.  Is it the crowd?  Maybe they all have noisemakers.

Not very exciting stuff.

When I first heard it, I thought it was our tv.

Then I thought it was the broadcast....but it's been there everytime I've had any game on, or even in the clips on various channels.

I can't imagine sitting in the stadium with that noise.  :(

Was helping a buddy yesterday and he had this on - the local AM talk radio station of al lthings - and we both thought we were listening to Formula 1 for a while. Once we realized what it was, we corrected our mistake. :D

Soccer stadiums are pretty wild.  The fans take the sport very seriously...sometimes too seriously....

Maybe one day, I can see a World Cup game live.....I'd love to see the opening ceremony or the Finale live....

World Cup 2014 will be in Brazil.

You want to make soccer interesting? Hidden pit traps with spikes or carnivorous animals in them and land mines sprinkled liberaly around the field of play.

Seems that they're trying to ban our little friends the horns.  Seems the noise level coming out of them is on the order of 127 dB.  Earplugs are sold out.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20100607/od_uk_nm/oukoe_uk_soccer_world_vuvuzela

And we're required to wear DOUBLE hearing protection when the diesels are running--those go about 105 dB.

Yup--soccer--what a game...anybody got an extra bag of blood or urine I can throw on the field?  I feel like rioting!!!

I read that in that wonderfully peaceful Islamic country of Sub-molly that they're going around killing people for watching the games on TV....now that should/could raise some excitement among the fans.

That's similar to what George Carlin said about baseball...that there should be randomly placed land mines in the outfield. :lmao:

You have a better chance of Getting Obama to roll back SS, Medicare/caid, Obamacare, all banking regulations, make public unions illegal, Fire 70% of Gov't, defend the border, and pay off the entire debt in 1 year while cutting taxes 80%...

Just sayin...

Did anyone see today's US vs Slovenia?

They tied...but the dirtbag referee took away the game goal from the US.
Luckily England and Algeria tied today, so that leaves the US in the running.  They played a lazy first half...but fought for their lives second half.  Not only tied the Slovs with 2 goals...but kicked another one in for a possible win.  Ref sucked.

GO US!!!

The games might have a hard time being played if the electricity is turned off. The union utility workers may go on strike this Monday.

Said ref has been banned from refereeing any more games at the WC.  It was ****ing blatant, the foul--the American forward was being held by the Slovenian defender, and the American was called for holding.  The replay showed the Slovenian's arm around the American.  FIFA may be a typical international organization in their anti-Americanism (I don't know for sure), but this was blatant.  FIFA had to take action.

I hope that that ref (from Mali) never works an international soccer game again.

It's the lovely Americans fault for placing himself in the arms of the Slovenian Muslim queer.....he must now be stoned to death.

That ref from Mali is from a region that is nearly 100% Muslim. Remember, it wasn't just the call that negated the goal, but also the yellow card he gave the American for a handball on what clearly showed to be a clean header. In addition, he missed several obvious calls against the US.

After all is said and done, this will undoubtedly be the most blatantly mishandled umpiring job of the entire tournament.

But as Leylas said, the US should actually be the bigger culprit because the goals they gave up had nothing to do with bad officiating in the first half. If they play like that from now on they will lose.

So far, the US is playing a lot like Italy (the defending champs for those who don't know).  They play best when they're behind.  Italy and Brazil play tomorrow(not each other)...a nice Father's Day indeed.  Family will be at my house for pizza and the games. :-)
