A new U.S. Senate bill would grant the president far-reaching emergency powers to seize control of or even shut down portions of the Internet.

The legislation announced Thursday says that companies such as broadband providers, search engines, or software firms that the government selects "shall immediately comply with any emergency measure or action developed" by the Department of Homeland Security. Anyone failing to comply would be fined.

That emergency authority would allow the federal government to "preserve those networks and assets and our country and protect our people," Joe Lieberman, the primary sponsor of the measure and the chairman of the Homeland Security committee, told reporters on Thursday. Lieberman is an independent senator from Connecticut who caucuses with the Democrats.

Because there are few limits on the president's emergency power, which can be renewed indefinitely, the densely worded 197-page bill (PDF) is likely to encounter stiff opposition.

TechAmerica, probably the largest U.S. technology lobby group, said it was concerned about "unintended consequences that would result from the legislation's regulatory approach" and "the potential for absolute power." No one will notice, and when they do, they will be told "It's for the children." And everyone (the majority)  will blithely nod their heads and allow it.

Last I heard they are still working on it but nothing has yet to be really done with it.

Giving this power to the guy who said that, there is just way too much information out there and we are being distracted by it, is scary.  :banghead:

And Paul McCartney had the gall to say that Bush didn't even know what a library is when Obama thinks that they are a distraction.  :banghead:

This has come up under GOP leadership as well, so let's at least be accurate in where we point fingers.

And I point it straight at COTUS and that little search and seizure comment...

Please re-read what I stated. The idea has come up with GOP leadership in DC as well.

Doesn't really matter anyway, the Patriot Act covers most of what they want to do. Remember that little thing... that GOP signed item?

I do remember that little thing -- however, it does not cover what they want this to do.

Not only that, the Patriot Act was really nothing new. Its most controversial provision originated under Jimmy Carter.

The passing of the USA Patriot Act, furthermore, added to the 1996 signing of the anti-terrorism bill by the Clinton administration, which expanded the U.S. government's investigative and legislative powers.

Before both laws, Congress passed the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978, making it acceptable to wiretap non-citizens with the approval of a secret court along with secret evidence.

Same thing happens in Australia.  My husband is on a LS1/LS2 forum (for his GTO) and a lot of the Australia members disappear at the same time for numerous days.  It's no coincidence.

Some of the members complain about it.  I guess the others are just used to it?
