So much for MLK's dream.....

excerpt

In Washington, a schoolchild can be white, African American, Latino, Asian America, Native American, Pacific Islander and more than 50 permutations thereof.

What’s not permitted is apathy about race.

Schools have long tried to get parents to identify their children by race. That’s a good idea for several reasons. For example, there’s no way to see what’s happening with the “achievement gap” if blacks and Latino students can’t be compared with white and Asian-American children.

Now the state is pushing that generally good idea to the point of ridiculous absolutism.

Not all parents want to classify their kids racially, and not all of them care. Lots of kids show up at school without having been properly profiled by their moms or dads. The requisite forms could be filled out with boxes checked for “unknown,” “multiracial” or “declined to answer.”

Prerequisite to fan the flames of a race war...

QUERY: If a parent refuses to racially identify their child does that mean the public school will refuse admission?

If so that strikes me as a 14th Amendment/civil rights issue. People cannot be denied equal protection or participation on the basis of race. Identification--or even lack thereof--cannot be used to deny government services.

Basically, they are saying that there is an acceptable way to be racist..... If you are putting the kids into a racial box, for what will be there own good.... or some such crap.  :whatever:

I don't think that will work. They'll say all are equally protected and all equally have to answer.

To wit I would reply: what if a public school asked the same question on religion?

Can the state demand interrogations on matters of conscience as a precursor to the full rights of citizenship?

Or as a voting requirement.

state = government at all levels

Even then the Doctrine of Incorporation says states and municipalities cannot abrogate civil rights.

Not to say your cynicism is unjustified but just because we live in cynical times doesn't mean we have to eat our shit sandwhiches with a smile on our faces.
