A retired U.S. Marine who runs a high school ROTC program in Worcester says he faces the boot for refusing to pay local union dues, leaving the 58-year-old father of two crying foul and school administrators bewildered.
“It just seems crazy that they’re gonna fire me over $500,†said Maj. Stephen L. Godin, senior naval science instructor at the Naval Junior ROTC Unit of North High School. “Everyone’s talking about finding good teachers - I haven’t missed a day in 14 years
What is interesting in this story is the reader comments. In typical liberal Massachussetts idiology, some see no problem FORCING someone to pay union dues. I personally refused a job at a South Shore hospital because I would be required to join a union. The person at the personal office could not believe it.
-
exactly it should be illegal to FORCE someone to join a union, especially since you don't have a choice of unions, its an illegal monopoly.
Bring it to the Supreme Court.
-
Yep, some of those comments aren't good for the blood pressure.

Public unions in general and teacher's unions in particular have badly over played their hand. Somewhere there is a great quote by the head of one of the teacher's unions which pretty states the obvious, that teachers unions are not for the benefit of the children but the aggrandizement of the teacher and liberal control of education. In fact there is very little education which takes place, only indoctrination. The new age secular humanist religion of global warming is a perfect example.

Would that it were so. Yet another reason to despise FDR.

Amen. That man probably did more damage to this country than any other president. Obama is working hard to take over that title.
-
What I find unbelieveable is that the weenie state of the Massive-2-shits-minus-one allows JROTC at all.....and a Marine teacher at that....oh what a scar that might leave on the little pu$$ies.

Wow...
Some of the comments over at the OP link are truely pathetic.

He's works for the DoD -- they pay his benefits and half his salary. The teacher's union does not and cannot negotiate anything for him. The military needs to step in here and threaten loss of federal funding to the City of Worcester's Public Schools. Someone needs to slap down these morons.

He is a retired Marine. As a retired Marine, he gets 1/2 of his base pay at the time of his retirement, and health benefits for the rest of his life.
As well he should.
Semper Fi Marine and kick that union's ASS.

I despise public unions with a passion.
Remember when the flight controllers union went on strike and President Reagan fired all their sorry assses?
THAT was a good day.

Ok jarhead, as someone who comes from a military family I find it hard to feel bad for a selfish whiner like you. It appears to me that you're not very good at taking orders or just not a team player. I'll bet your fellow marines didn't want to be in a foxhole with you. I sure wouldn't feel safe with you watching my back. A real Marine wouldn't go running to the press. Sounds to me like you have been on the public dole all your life, maybe you need to find real work.
So now the liberal standard on military expertise is being from a military family, huh?
Boy, do they owe Bush Jr an apology for the 2004 election.

12. What pay does the instructor receive?
Instructors receive, as a minimum, an amount equal to the difference between their retired pay and the active duty pay which they would receive if ordered to active duty. Active duty pay includes base pay, quarters allowance, subsistence allowance, clothing allowance (NCOs), and variable housing allowance. This is computed on a monthly basis, and then multiplied by the length of the contract. Assume your active duty pay to be $3000 and your retired pay to be $1000 monthly; then: Active Duty
Pay & Allowances $3000
Less Retired Pay $1000
Minimum Pay from School $2000
(per month of contract length)
Schools must pay the minimum (prescribed by Public Law 88-647) but may pay above the minimum. Any amount above the minimum is subject to negotiation between the instructor and the school. The Air Force reimburses the school one-half of the minimum. Each active duty pay raise will result in an increase of the minimum pay from the school. Conversely, each cost of living raise in retired pay could result in a decrease of the minimum pay. Notwithstanding any other provision of law, AFJROTC instructors are not, while so employed, considered to be on active duty or inactive duty training for any purpose. Only the pay is computed as though you were on active duty.

This is the AF's program. My husband considered doing this when he retired, but there are very limited slots open in this area.

Union prez vows to review ROTC instructor’s request
The head of the Worcester teacher’s union claims she never received a Marine JROTC instructor’s repeated requests for arbitration over $500 in dues he insists he shouldn’t have to pay.
Union president Cheryl DelSignore, under withering fire from ranking state pols, claims retired USMC Maj. Stephen Godin sent his requests to an inactive e-mail account, but she’ll address them now that the matter’s been brought to her attention.
In a statement released by the Massachusetts Teachers Association yesterday, DelSignore said, “I am reviewing those e-mails and will reach out to Major Godin (today) to determine how to resolve this dispute swiftly.â€
DelSignore did not return repeated calls by the Herald this week, even as pols responding to news reports called the union’s demand “stupid,†saying Massachusetts unions have “run amok.â€
Teachers’ unions came under new pressure yesterday after Senate Minority Leader Richard Tisei (R-Wakefield) filed legislation to exempt JROTC instructors from union membership, and all three gubernatorial candidates weighed in.

She shot herself in the foot on this one. It adds fuel to the fire that Unions are ineffective and full of waste. How the hell you let an "inactive" email acc't accept mail w/o an Out of Office response w/o being proven an idiot????
-
You know, Major Godin already belongs to a union, the best in the world, it's dues are paid with blood, sweat and tears....... and his are paid up for life.
........USMC.......
I can't help but wonder how many of those that stormed Union president Cheryl DelSignore's little kingdom were Marines...... :rotf:,.....
Might she say, "The Marines have landed and the situation is out of hand." :rotf:

Yo bitch... How are you gonna review e-mails from an inactive e-mail account?
Was your current e-mail address listed on your ****ing demands for payment of dues in your notifications to a man that you aren't worthy of shining his shoes??
You are lying your pathetic little union ass off and we all know it.

She just lost the elections and will be stepping down in a few weeks. New union president coming on who will take care of this.
Note: She lost the election, and demanded a recount. The recount showed she lost again. So she demanded a new election. I am not kidding you. Worcester is the second biggest city in New England with about 25,000 students. This is a very large teacher's union. Hack city as you can imagine.

Massachusetts has a real problem with bullying lately, first Phoebe Prince, Carl Joseph Walker-Hoover, and now this one.
